96 Yankees World Series highlight reel

Personal highlight reel I made of the 96 Yankees improbable World Series comeback against Atlanta. I wanted to make sure I showed every Yankees miscue in games 1 and 2 to make clear how badly overmatched they seemed before they came back. A few clips on here are not shown in the official 96 World Series video. I could not believe how many ugly errors they made early on, but that makes the comeback that much more dramatic. To date, it's my favorite New York sports championship of them all. I was just 12 turning 13 that summer. Happiest memory of my childhood was watching Game 6 with my aunts, uncles, cousins all celebrating together.
I am going to keep cranking out sports content I think the community will enjoy on here as long as I can. If you enjoyed this video and any others on my channel and wish to send any donation, please send to www.paypal.me/billny33. If you'd rather not, there's nothing I can do about it anyway, right? Enjoy either way.

I was 8 at the time. This was the first full season of baseball that I ever watched (though I had gotten into it towards the end of 95). I was way more invested in this postseason’s outcome, as opposed to in 95. I happened to be visiting my father and my brothers in Queens for the weekend (I grew up near Albany). I had never watched a game with them before game 6. When Hayes caught the last out we went nuts. Man, to think how spoiled we were by the dynasty! All they did was win. Priceless memories.

I always loved it when Bernie did that too. It was so cool. Bernie was so humble that it was kinda neat that he would allow himself any kind of flashy thing he would do when scoring a run and that made it endearing rather than perhaps annoying.

Huge yanks fan here. At around 32:10 when Boggs is riding on the horse you can hear “we are the champions” playing. The video cuts to a different scene just before the very end of the song but I swear you can hear freddy mercury about to say “of the world”. The mandela effect is a real phenomenon.

Lol. Don't stop there! You can pile on with "'96! & '99!" When the Yankees smoked Atlanta in both series,coming back from a 2-0 hole in '96 and won 4 out of 5 WS('96-'98,'99,'00) including 3 in a row and 6 appearances in 8 years. Bring up the fact that Atlanta owned their division for like a decade straight,had 3 HOF pitchers,went to 5 World Series in the 1990's yet won just 1 ring,and it wasn't even against the Yankees. Tell them to "eat a full bag of sht!" too. Lol.

Out of the latest five New York Yankee championship runs, 1996 was the toughest of the five. Going 8-0 on the road including three games inside Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium against the defending MLB World Series champions after trailing 2-0.

Game 1 of the 96 World Series was a nightmare for me watching at home I shut it off once the Braves got up 8-1 in the 3rd inning. Everything that could have gone wrong did go wrong in that game. Game 2 was a game I wasn’t looking forward to because that year Maddux was damn near invincible and I felt that the Yanks had no shot. Maddux dominated and the Yankees had no offense at all. I was very worried when I found out the Yankees were down 0-2 in the series. Game 3 I watched that game hoping that Cone would come up big against Glavine and he did also the Yankees bats actually came alive for the first time in the series and the Bernie home run sealed the game and I had renewed hope for Game 4. Game 4 came around but I wasn’t optimistic at the start for two reasons. One because the Braves got up 6 runs early and two because the Yankees had Kenny Rogers on the mound who was atrocious the entire playoff run and he was terrible that night too. Neagle however for Atlanta was mowing the Yankees down. I turned off the game foolishly thinking this game was going to be another Braves blowout. The Yankees bullpen though held it down and I checked back in to see what the score was. It was 6-3 in the 6th. I was thinking what if they come back? In the 8th inning with runners on Leyritz hit a 3 run shot off of Wohlers and I lost my mind. I went absolutely berserk. Then the Yankees took the lead. Won 8-6 in 10 and tied the series 2-2. Then I started to believe that they could win this series that game changed the entire complexion of the series. Because if Atlanta won they’d be up 3-1 and have the clincher at home in Game 5. The Yankees winning shifted the momentum in their favor. Game 5 of the 96 World Series is my favorite baseball game of all time. A pitcher’s duel for the ages between Pettite and Smoltz and this one did not disappoint. It was deadlocked at 0. For 3 and a half innings they matched zeros then the Yankees struck in the 4th to make it 1-0 and that was all they needed. I was on the edge of my seat that entire game and when the Yankees finally won I was relieved. Game 6 I was beyond hyped for this game I was looking for a tape so I could record the game on my VCR. It was a game 2 rematch Key vs Maddux and on this night Maddux wasn’t invincible he was mortal. In the 3rd inning the Yankees scored on Maddux off of a Joe Girardi triple and would score two more runs. Key wasn’t sharp that night but he didn’t need to be he got the Yankees to a point where they could get it to the bullpen. The bullpen closed the Braves offense down and once Mo got in I stopped worrying and started counting the outs. The Braves gave me a little scare late but the Yankees pulled it off and won the World Series. I will never forget that night for as long as I live. This entire postseason run in 96 was just magic and this team after 25 years remains my favorite Yankees team and it remains my favorite Yankees World Series run.

Great summary. I also turned off game 6 the moment Hayes failed to get that ground ball down the line to make it 6-0. I thought Atlanta was just going to keep piling on like in Game 1. I turned on the Sega Genesis to blow off some steam. My dad who is not the Yankee fan I am I think took notice and kept watching the game in his room. Later I heard him shouting excitedly from his room and I had to see what was happening. It was that 6th inning rally, now it was 6-2 with a man on. Then Hayes singles a runner home, 6-3 and I was back in it from there. I feel the same way about game 5 as you do but I think you undersell how terrifying the end of game 6 was. I had my heart in my throat. We were up 3-1 in the 9th, now its 3-2 and a single ties it. Lemke works the count full. As they used to say on SportsCenter, the cheese was getting binding. Each of the 4 Yankee wins had these terrifying gutcheck moments and they came through every time. Game 3 had that 6th inning jam w the bases loaded when Torre came out to talk to Cone. Game 4 aside from the 6-0 deficit, had the Braves so close to a walk off single in the 9th when McGriff came up against Lloyd. I thought it was a single off the bat but it was a 6-4-3 to send to extra innings. Game 5 and 6 gutcheck moments were also both in the Braves 9th and go without saying.
@davidnetterwald1846
@davidnetterwald1846 3 года назад
I was not as worried about the end of game 6 only because I was caught up in the potential celebration that was going to take place once they got the final out. It’s not that I didn’t think that the Braves could turn it around and win I had that in the back of my mind. Anything can happen in baseball but I just felt at ease in the last few innings of that game for the first time in the whole series.

I'm not a Yankees fan but for some reason, even after they got beat badly in the 1st two games I thought they still had a chance. Maybe it's because I was kind rooting for them to beat Atlanta in the Series. ;-) But yeah, the Yankees looked so overmatched early on & played uncharacteristically poor defensive baseball in those 1st two games. Even 'The Boss' didn't think the Yankees had a chance to come back after Games 1 & 2. But then they go down to Atlanta & sweep all 3 games on the road...that's when you knew it was their destiny to come back & win. :-)

Damn that is pretty cool. I saw Belliard played 9 games in 1982 and Stargell played 74. At some point they were in that clubhouse together. A guy who played in 1961 had a teammate who was still playing in 1996. Pretty damn cool. For that to work ever you have to catch one guy at the tail end and one guy right at the beginning AND they both need to play at least 15+ years. That's the tough part. Not many guys have careers that last over 15 years in the bigs.

Joe Buck from 1996-2001 was a pretty good broadcaster, he was excited at the right moment and looked like he wanted be there. 2002-2012, was a different story, he looked like he’d rather be elsewhere and falling asleep on the calls. He’s done better since 2012 but he can still do better. His Achilles heel is that he does not do baseball every week like he used to for an unknown reason, i think the #1 broadcaster should be there most of the saturdays during the season. if you ask me, i prefer his commentary during the end of the 1990s when FOX first got baseball.

The Braves' defense let them down at critical times. They got a bad break in Game 4 when the swinging bunt by Hayes failed to roll foul. (I don't blame Chipper for letting it roll). However, Belliard, normally a sure handed fielder, booted a sure double play ball to set up the home run by Leyritz. In Game 5 Grissom made a 2-base error (set up when Dye crossed in front of him) which led to the sole run of the game. The Braves did not get the breaks when their deep fly balls were caught at the warning track and the good catch by O'Neill at the end of Game 5 on a well hit ball by Polonia. Note how the financial resources of the Yankees allowed them to have such former stars as Tim Raines, Darryl Strawberry, and Cecil Fielder on the bench.

@billny33
@billny33 6 лет назад
Wow so Game 4 and Jim Leyritz is the only sports related one. Everything else on the list is finance or politics related. Strong statement. And I can understand this being a really infuriating loss, but let me ask, if you are a Braves fan, why is 1996 worse than 1991 or 1992? Plus it can also be argued that in 1993, 1997 and 1998 you also lost in the playoffs to teams you were better than. But 91 and 92 in particular also had to also be agonizing World Series losses unless you were too young to fully understand the game then. I will say that the year before, that loss in Seattle in 1995 took some of my childhood too. As did the Knicks loss to Indiana that year on Ewing's missed finger roll and their loss in the Finals to Houston the year before. Thankfully for me the Yankees turned their situation around and won a bunch to make up for it. The Knicks never quite got over the hump though.
@ealter95
@ealter95 6 лет назад
I was far too young in 91 or 92. I became a braves fan as best as I can remember in 1993 (I was 6). If you must know: My grandmother died after game 2 (braves haven't won a WS game since). Between getting on a plane for the first time to go to the funeral and coming back, I was exhausted for Game 4. Still, I was biting my nails even with a 6 run lead. I lived in the NY area so everyone was rooting for the Yanks and I felt that. I was ordered to bed up 6 runs and was told that if the yanks tied it up I'd be woken up. I listened with horror on my walkman hidden under my covers as Leyritz hit the homerun. I met my dad in the hallway (me going to watch the game, him coming to wake me up) and was allowed to watch the rest of this traumatic loss on my parents bed while my dad consoled me. I went to game 6 at the Stadium and some asshole yankees fan through a beer on me. I watched Hays catch the ball freezing and frightened that someone would kill me for wearing a braves jacket. I walked back to the car while the Bronx was erupting in a frenzy as the classless yankees fans screamed fuck the braves (in a mock tomahawk chant). It was a long ride home back to Central New Jersey.
@billny33
@billny33 6 лет назад
Wow, that all sounds quite traumatic. For the longest time I had a very strong fear of going to both playoff games and elimination games because I rage really hard in those scenarios and the comfort of your own home is really the best place for that, plus you spend all this money, time, effort in going to a game hoping for this great experience and then if you go and your team gets knocked out and traumatizes you, well you will inevitably feel like why didn't you just stay home and watch this mess on tv for free then so you could scream it out if necessary with few people or no one looking. I eventually went to game 2 of the 2003 World Series against the Marlins, they won the game handily and it was a real nice experience. They lost the series but that game was not why. In 2012 I went to game 5 against the Orioles when my brother woke me up and let me know the day of the game that cheap tickets were still available and I called in sick from work to go, they won. I kind of overcame my fears and was rewarded. My grandfather died on August 11th, 1995 a day before Mickey Mantle died. He was a huge Yankee fan and his pancreatic cancer was a long, painful drawn out ordeal for my mom and whole extended family, that may have added some extra weight to the Yankees loss in Seattle later that year. But I must say I've never had an experience going to a game that is as harrowing as what you described, but I also went to only home games. I went to one Yankee-Red Sox game in Boston in 2014 (maybe if I had gone to one of the 2004 ALCS games I might have a similar horror story but thankfully no). Jeter hit a home run in his final year and most of the Sox fans actually cheered. I was really moved by that. So yeah I've had my heart broken a few times, 2001 was my freshman year of college in CT and many Mets and Red Sox fans on campus were just ecstatic the Yanks lost even in spite of 9/11 having just happened, that was a pretty bad experience for me, but overall I can't complain. I've gotten to see a lot of titles. I hope at least you were able to enjoy 1995.

I was, but I hadnt suffered as a brave fan so I guess I didnt feel the additional feeling of relief. Its not that 97 wasnt bad. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mR3eK5gCChM.html. It was, and I felt cheated. The Braves were awesome in 1998, I couldn't quite understand how they lost to the Pads. They clearly werent better than the Yankees in 1999, but they should have won games 1 and for sure 3 that hurt, but again, nothing like 96. After 99 they lost in the first round/wild card game 8/9 years they were in the playoffs. Its been pretty terrible. I watched the Yankees win in 2001 at Shea Stadium. Weird how I have seen 2 yanks clinchers. The Griffey circle around the bases and blowing a 2-0 lead had to hurt in 95. Sorry to hear about your grandfather. Not that it matters at all, but I was born on August 11th.

@billny33
@billny33 4 года назад
@@DMalltheway so '95 was the team that won. They were not favored that year cause Cleveland was such a juggernaut, but they quietly showed what their pitching could do to them. They were heavily favored in '96. Idk if they were in '92 and, '91 I know was just a shock to see them there. In, '93 they won like 100 games but still barely got into the playoffs w a strong challenge from the Giants, then lost to Philly. In '97 they got screwed by Eric Gregg in the Marlins series. In '98 they almost overcame a 3-0 deficit vs San Diego and in '99 they almost blew a 3-0 lead to the Mets before being swept by the Yanks. My question to you is, what was the best Braves team? The team that most deserved to win. Was it this '96 team that had Smoltz in top form to go w Maddux, had a ring under their belts, Andruw Jones, Jermaine Dye, Wohlers etc? If not, what year was their best team regardless of the end result?
@DMalltheway
@DMalltheway 4 года назад
billny33 96 was their best team in my opinion, 99 they were outmatched by the Yanks and even if they beat SD in 98 they’d still lose to the Yanks that year and that Yanks team is one of the best ever. If they would’ve passed the lucky Marlins then I think they would’ve beaten Cleveland even with their stacked lineup.

His first year doing FOX games. You have to admit though, he was a better announcer then and did not fall into the bad habits he developed later. I don't think he showed indifference during great plays for either team this series. That's what pisses people off about him the most I think. This World Series actually made me a fan of Buck. I thought he added some really nice calls to these great Yankee moments that I'll never forget.

@billny33
@billny33 7 лет назад
I thought he sounded appropriate until the actual catch. He did blow it. And he's been indifferent so many times it really is annoying. For perspective though, the great Al Michaels blew a similar call in Super Bowl XXV on the most memorable play that doesn't involve Scott Norwood's foot and kind of shortchanged us on the Mark Ingram 3rd and 13, see below. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AYl_gSzmbZY.html I sort of wondered if Buck was unsure if Tyree actually completed the catch or if the ball hit the ground and his indecisiveness affected the call. Either way, that's really not an excuse. Buck could have easily said something like "DID HE CATCH THAT?!" if he wasn't sure. But judging him by his work on this series though I think he was fine.
@billny33
@billny33 7 лет назад
Oops, I skimmed through this comment and thought you were talking about the Tyree catch. Actually I liked his call of the Plax TD. "Manning lobs it, Burress, alone! Touchdown New York!" What more do you need to say? Then just let the emotion of the moment carry it for a few minutes.

To be fair, standards for elite closers were trash that time. If a closer had an era close to 4 but have 30+ saves, he's All Star caliber. Closers saving games at the skin of the teeth were somewhat common that time, to think Wetteland for all his reputation was actually one of the better ones that time (as in keeping his ERA below 3). Want to see a bigger joke? Who they chose over Mo in 1996 All Star. The perfect response to those who would try to argue that players can't be good if they're not in the All Star (not to mention some MVP winners who didn't make it to the AS roster the year they won it).
