1998, Marco Pantani and the legendary Giro-Tour double, literally the stuff of legends...
Here we take a close look at really cool `98 Bianchi Megapro in full Marco Pantani Mercatone Uno setup up against a 100% real deal `98 Bianchi Megapro Mercatone Uno team bike as ridden by Riccardo "di Sica" Forconi at the Giro D`italia and Tour de France in 1998. There are some subtle differences - the original Mercatone Uno team bikes has faded due to degredation of the laquer, the team bike also has distinct team features, such as Time carbon forks, PMP Titanium seatpost and yellow Flite saddle while the Marco Pantani replica has a downtube shifter for the front derallieur, yellow ITM Big One stem and epic Pirata saddle...
Real deal Mercatone Uno team bike (fresh form long term display in Italy) up against a Marco Pantani replica - we`ll have to wait until Spring/Summer to really get to grips with the pair...

Hi again Dan, nice to see your site up and running. i wondered if you can point me to where i can date a Bianchi frame iv just picked up, im thinking its 60s its got a five number serial number on the headtube beginning with a 5, all the best mate

This one is settup 53/42 upfront, 11/25 (might be 24) at the back so a pretty good climbing settup - at least its not a straight cut block... Dan

I just bought a Bianchi MegaX-Pro Al with the carbon fork in black with German colors. Do you know the differences to the Mega-Pro XL and the normal Mega Pro Al? I don't find information about this on the internet and in general only one other Bianchi in this spec. I'm new to this scene.

Yep, most megapro`s are the AL (L) version, Dedaccai tubing is thin but not crazy thin but check the frame for cracks, especially around the headset srea and where the downtube meats the headtube - XL (extra Legere) have thinner wall thickness and are really fragile - best avoided as they will crack, Dan

Not sure I`m the man but nice of you to say... might be wrong (often am) but your after 7 speed C-record index shifters - they were Campagnolos first proper go at indexing - they have a reputation for being a bit tricky to set up but I`ve never had a problem, though I would say that Dura Ace seven speed index downtube shifting is crisper, Dan.

@@vintagevelos9517 hi Dan , i bought some syncro 2 index shifters but they turned up loose..anyway i managed assemble them but the right one is clicking in the wrong position, you weren't kidding when you said they were tricky to setup! any thoghts please? thx angain

@@blackbearbowie8162 But naughty of the seller to ship them loose - usual practice is to keep them in order with a cable tie - I`ve had them apart before to swop the catch spring and and tooth cog, bit tricky as mentioned - google for an exploded diagram, Dan

i have an XL Pro like yours and 4 EV2's I ride fequently. Also 2 EV3 and 2 EV4. I just don't know anything about making a video but would like to share these with the public. I really enjoyed your presentation and the information maybe you could share how you do this.

I had one of these years back mega pro L . no problems raced it rode it tons put through the paces .I just bought a plain gauge 7005 mega pro. Is it a bit more robust of a frame. Less crack prone? Don't plan to ride this one hard will be my baby and a easy ride bike

Awesome -must have been a great period racer - the cracking is a time/fatigue issue, you should be fine on the 7005, just no riding up curbs... Dan

Good question - massivly over valued after the pandemic drove up prices and sales leading to current industry wide sales slump - not sure what Fausto is up to but he`s a cleaver guys so probably a lot more to it than we would ever know, Dan.

Fabulous video , really interesting … I have an XL EV2 … amazing bike to ride, only on warm sunning days …. Ps, just a precision on the Italian … the E of Mercatone is pronounced and not silent… in Italian every letter in a word is pronounced … picky I know, again love the video

Bianchi made replica Mercatone Uno bikes in period, ally megapro`s and steel Boron`s plus other steel frames, they are not particuly rare, often on ebay - real deal team bikes are super rare.... Dan

After watching this again iv dug out my old Bianchi frame not sure what year i think 90s its Air Reparto Corse on the forks badge, anyway iv found a womens nail polish colour thats pretty bang on for touch up.

How does one aquire vintage bikes not the replica but the real deal? I dont need the team bike but would like a liget mid 1990s road bike not a replica.

Hmmm... real deal team bikes can be a challenge - especially if your after a specific team, rider or year - ebay is the best place to start but try and figure out what you want first and don`t be suprised by the premium, Dan

Yep, no better up close - its strange, the braising work on a mid `90`s steel Bianchi TSX is a work of art, yet ally braising by Bianchi a couple of years later is visually poor, though the frames tend not crack at the welds, Dan
