After upgrading the MegaSet for fast group rides with modern components, I share my ride impressions after two fast rides. Do the components make it the equal of modern bikes?

Wow, that's a huge nail. I get way more flats in FL than back home. I've had none here and six in FL. Love your analysis of the riding feel. So insightful.

Thank you Perry! Always appreciative of your comments. Flats are seasonal for me... they come in bunches then stop for a while.

I think the twitchy feeling has to do with the rake of the fork. Usually race bikes feel twitchy at slow speeds but settle at high speeds since it’s designed to handle at high speeds

It could very well be. Thanks for your comment👍🏾

I read an interesting article somewhere awhile back by Lennard Zinn. In order for a bike to feel nimble and responsive to handlebar inputs, the designers have to build instability into the front end geometry. That slight instability lends itself to feel a bit twitchy sometimes, but that is the side affect of being able to have a bike that's able to lean over and go fast in the corners. It was a concept that absolutely blew my mind when I first read it! Is the new fork a different rake than the original?

@thegoodwheel Год назад
Thank you Christopher! I have read a few articles from Leonard but not this concept. I didn't measure, so I am not sure. The new fork did two things. It has a lower fork crown which will make the head angle slightly steeper... and it increased the trail visually in my eyes... bringing the front wheel a bit closer to the downtube. It is a bit Frankenstein-ed so I am essentially riding a very different bike. With the original fork, the bike turned like a truck at normal speeds. As I ride this more, I am sure I'll adapt.

Terrible luck with that flat. If I may make a suggestion, perhaps you should make the move to tubeless tires? I've ridden them for the last 10 years and the only time I've had a flat was a nail as well. All the other smaller punctures from thorns and the like get plugged via the sealant. I pulled the nail out and used a dynaplug patch which only takes a few seconds. Reinflated and off I went. Although, a dynaplug would probably work on a tubular tire as well. Addendum: Perhaps a straight legged steel fork with a 43-44 rake measurement would solve the slow speed twitchy issue. Waterford/Gunnar make beautiful straight legged forks and I've head them send one to me unpainted so I could have it powder coated. Straight legged forks with a classic steel frames are aesthetic perfection and perform beautifully.

Hi Chinaski! Thank you for the recommendation. It is definitely something I am considering switching to in the near future. You are probably right about the fork. One of the aspects of the original fork was that the bike felt lazy when going into corners. This is probably the trade off I get with this fork... which I can live with, but I appreciate the suggestion 👍🏾

Hey Luis thanks for another great video... I was always intrigued as to why Colnago came out with the straight steel "Precisa" fork. After reading up on the history of the idea behind it I put one on my last steel frame. The weight is mimal i in comparison to the added quality ride of the bike.Just passing on an idea. Looking forward to your next video. All the best.?

I had a similar nail incident...but the nail went through an ambrosio rim also..After watching this,you got me wanting a steel frame Bianchi....Can you recommend which to look out for?
@thegoodwheel
@thegoodwheel Год назад
Hi Jamie! Thanks for watching. The high quality Reparto Corse frames have the Bianchi logo carved on the non drive side upper bottom bracket shell. Some of the Deda tubing from the late 90s are also pretty good as well as the Reynolds tubing stuff... like the 631 I believe. Good luck hunting👍🏾

Do you really run tubular tires?! Amazing - how does it work when you get a flat on the road since the tires are glued on?
@thegoodwheel
@thegoodwheel Год назад
Thank you for viewing Speedbird. Yes, I run them on a couple of my bikes and get on great with them. I tape instead of glue and I carry a small tubular spare with me. 👍🏾

One bike seems to have a carbon seatpost with a setback, while the other has an alloy zero setback seatpost. Could that explain some of the difference?
