I had the same failure on an old steel bike a couple of months back. Even had the same winged nuts. Rear dropouts got so worn out that the inner spacer ate its way into the material and one moment it just let go, the hub just went berserk and disassembled itself and the wheel got jammed in the frame in the same exact way. Gave an unholy sight to the audience of a pub as I was just dashing past the road on a completely straight line and then all of a sudden I performed the longest skid of my lifetime. Had to push the crazily heavy steel bike with the jammed wheel for 13kms.
Oh Dan I laughed and laughed when your not so trusty steed nearly threw you in a ditch! But I did admire your vintage jumper - and shades. Lots to do. I look forward to the build, hope you manage to find the many bits and pieces you need.
id be abit worried riding that to mate! im excited to to tell you iv picked a mid 70s Flandria frame and i just happen to have a 1st gen Dura Ace groupset. thx again Dan
Haha, love this nonsense. I race a 3 speed Hercules ( no idea of year, 50s or earlier. ) ... just the occasional short time trial or gravel event. Hilarious beating carbon bikes ... got 10th out of 15 in a 5 miler recently... it was downhill 😂 Great vid mate.
There is nothing better than being the boss on an old bike - I`m entered for a winter hilly sportive soon and for sure I aim to show up some carbons with a well chosen vintage steel bike - though maybe not this antique ride just yet.... Dan
Just make it fixed gear for the time being. The easiest is just to adjust the gearing to something that will suit your riding speed from grinding to spinning there is quite a big range of speeds. Than fit this brake to the front wheel.
