If you look at the bottom of the Skinnybucker, you can clearly see TWO separate bar magnets. That means it's not stacked. It's an inline double coil. One coil under the E, A, D strings and another under the G, B, E strings.

I'm that "one guy in Germany" offering the fix for the KB trem mentioned in the video. I've tried to post a link to the website containing the information, but comments with links seem to be removed automatically. So, well, here I am, but I cannot tell you where to find information about this trem… ;-)

1.5 pounds of trem system, still neck dives. I think back in my teenage years at the guitar shop where I got lessons someone brought in one of the original singlecut models for some kind of repair, because I remember the Steinberger and the weird ‘80s black strip pickups!

The sharp edges of the fingerboard, on a guitar that old, surely must indicate it wasn't played very much. Congrats on finding this model, not many of these out there.

I work in metal. That bridge fix is actually very easy to do with the right equipment! Which I happen to have access to at work. Those "brass inserts" are just a common thing where I work, in multiple sizes

Agreed. It’s a very simple repair and once done it’s a very good bridge system. The repair is much simpler than replacing the KB with something else. I have two Epiphone Spotlight Nouveaus with repaired KBs and they work great.

@@ChuckNicholsonTRM For years I owned a Korean-made Nouveau Spotlight w/the KB. At some point, my Dad converted it to a hard-tail, which worked okay. I've since bought an '88 Epi Les Paul 3 (Korea) w/a non-functioning KB. Could you possibly direct me towards getting the repair work done? I'm not sure the guy over in Germany is still repairing KBs. Any insight/recommendations would be appreciated. I'd like to repair & keep the KB if possible. Thanks.

I wonder if the neck pickup is made from two 3 pole pieces. If you look at 8:38 the potting conforms to what looks like two magnets. That would make sense for a humbucker.

A little late to this party but I just picked one of these up. However, the owner removed the KB trem system as well as the skinnybucker and filled in the cavities. He installed a regular wrap around tail piece system, repainted and re lacquered it. So, it lives up to the "Jr." name.

Can we take a moment to thank Eddie Van Halen for bringing about the shred guitars, and who passed away 2 years ago today. If you watch the VH Australian concert from 1998, you'll see Edward using a Steinberger trem system on his Peavey Wolfgang guitar. The Steinberger reminds me a lot of the Wonderbar system on my Washburn A20. I love that trem, but it is bulky. A Wonderbar trem is also what Ace Frehley used on a couple of his Gibson LP's

I had a really weird Washburn USA 80's metal guitar that had one of those. It was a crazy, spiky-shaped design & had previously belonged to the lead guitarist from a rock band called Fahrenheit. It was actually a pretty good trem system tbh, great for dive bombs etc but the guitar was seriously out of fashion by the time I got it from their former manager in the mid-nineties lol. Salutations Austin! Affirmative, I have not seen one of these before, it is in decent shape, considering how seldom you see one of these Steinberger bridges that is still functioning properly, it would have been a bonus for us, had you demonstrated that in action as well, but since it has already been repaired once, it is probably best left alone. That would be a really nice model with a standard Gibson bridge and stop bar. It definitely sounded more alive with some overdrive or distortion than it did clean. It’s a unique instrument. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸

In the late 90's, I had an 84 studio standard/custom, that had cream binding on the top of the body, cream plastics, and was in ebony finish. No binding on headstock. OMG I nearly spilled my drink when you opened the case. A double cut version! Too bad this one was afflicted with the Steinberger tremble-o. Looks and weighs more like a door latch for a German truck. I guess you lucked out and got a decent one. Reinforce those stress cracks between the cavity routes before they become a problem by masking right up to the crack to protect the body lacquer, wicking thin CA in there, then touch it up carefully with black nail polish. Keep this weird guitar!

I'm currently planning a build which I'm planning on putting two minibuckers and two goldfoil pickups into if I can squeeze it all in. I'm going for an extended scale length so I should have room. I've also seen 6 single coil guitars. Considering you can get himbuckers in the single coil format you could potentially have 6 humbuckers in a guitar. Add some mad scientist switching and individual eq for each pickup and you have mind blowing tonal options.

A lot of 80’s Kahlers had “lock” buttons too. That’s why I could never understand all the hate? Even if you didn’t want to use the trem, just push the lock buttons and it’s a hardtail. Except with much better tuning stability. 👊🏻

Kahlers and wonderbars which is what Washburn used where by far the best locking trems made at that time, far more superior and stable then any Floyd.
@Branbreakers
@Branbreakers Год назад
Apologies in advance for this comment being a long read--but if I'm remembering correctly from what I've read, the single-locking nature of the Kahler (that being the string clamp/locking nut) as opposed to double-locking left the early fulcrum-based models susceptible to easy tuning slippage. Once they switched to the cam design they were much easier to keep in tune but the issues with the first edition models earned them a bad reputation, plus every single component of the bridge being adjustable, tiny, and proprietary probably contributed to frustration working on them and further ruining their reputation. I think more in modern times it became "cool" to hate Kahlers when it became "cool" to hate Slayer because of Kerry King's association with the Kahler bridges. I had one on my SG which I have since swapped out for a Floyd merely for use of a D-tuna on my guitar; both are great trems. Excellent engineering.

@@Branbreakers I use both as well. I like Floyd, Kahler and Gotoh. They are all good trems when you learn to dial them in. And tuning stability is unmatched. The real reason most people hate trems is because they just don’t understand how to properly set them up. It’s pretty simple really. A balancing act. Strings vs springs in most cases.

I love double cutaways. I just think they look so much better. They're clean looking, symmetrical. The single cut is clunky, and chunky to me. Call me crazy but the double cuts are the way to go.

The guitar that got away. I had one of these guitars. I wish I would have never sold it. You may have just bought my old guitar !!! I wish I had the serial number of the guitar, I checked and the date matched the guitar in the video. I bought it around 1988 to1989.

You mean the one that has like a blacked out logo and inlays? I liked it but what made me not buy it was that it has a richlite fretboard instead of an Ebony fretboard

as a drummer, I've often wondered why guitars didnt come stock with 2 humbuckers and 2 single coils minimum? Is that just because every guitar company usually only utilized one type of pickup? I.E. Gibson-humbuckers or Fender-Single coil. I have a Les Paul and an SG but have often wondered how they would sound if single coils could be added for variety of tone.

For me, the perfect LP would have a P90 in the neck & a paf in the bridge, kinda like Tom Scholz's.
