I'm embarrassed to confess that I do use The Sims to fill a few voids in my life. I don't have many friends and the few that I do have have gotten married, had children, own their own house, they're getting on with life and I've fallen behind. I do use it to put a plaster on my loneliness and my bf has also shown concern over how much I play it. I don't play the Sims 4 as much, especially in these last few months with how broken it is.

Writing books was my absolute favorite thing in The Sims 3, so naturally I was excited to try it when I got the Sims 4 about two years ago. And while writing in itself did not change, they removed the one feature I actually loved and which gave me the most satisfaction: having the book in your bookcase and other Sims being able to buy your books at the bookstore. I never play with writing books in the Sims 4. What good is writing a book that just dissappears in the void with no other clue as a daily payment mentioning the title?

As long as you have all the necessary real life things done like going to work, basic hygiene and keeping your living space decent there's nothing wrong with obsessively playing video games. It isn't any worse than obsessively doing anything else like watching TV, reading, exercising and other odd hobbies, etc. And in my opinion..... playing video games should be seen as a hobby too. Also: I have a 12th grade (senior) son in Mid-West America (Illinois state) and he is not allowed to use his phone in class. Satch I think you are great and should be proud of yourself.

No! Not every coping mechanism is a bad one! It's only if it hurts you in some way eg. Does the sims get in your way of building healthy relationships?

Not all coping mechanisms are bad, many of them are incredibly helpful, sometimes when people have disorders especially GAD and panic attacks, coping mechanisms are a way of facing the problem. Sometimes there is nothing else they can do about it at the time, especially when it's only a percieved problem due to anxiety. Coping mechanisms can include deep breathing, talking to friends, watching videos to help calm down and distract yourself. My therapist actually recommends these things....so long as it's not done in an unhealthy amount. Like coping mechanisms are often used on top of treatment, and are also in themselves part of the treatment. If I don't use coping mechanisms, I will spiral into a mental breakdown due to my panic attacks and OCD anxieties, so I consider preventing that to be healthy, considering I also seek therapy and some of my coping techniques are advised from psychologists, including my therapist. So please don't say these things about coping mechanisms when many people like me need it to function.

The male versus female sims one, is like that for me somewhat, except my male sims get more effort put into them than the females. And there is just so-so-so much female CC, TSR's frontpage is the worst example, that is just always flooded with female CC that makes them look like plastic figures with that utterly silly finger-on-mouth pose in many of them. Plus the CC for female kids & toddlers is a bit, questionable at times. You'd be lucky to find much male CC amongst the massive sea of female types, and it's all that silly 20-25 year-old ken doll model-type-stuff.

The thing that annoys me the most about the writing system in the Sims is how they write one draft in a few hours and BAM they get a lot of money coming in for weeks. As a writer, I can confirm your work has to go through a gazillion drafts before it's publishable (or at least in this day and age). Furthermore, it irks me how linear the writing skill is. Although you can be classed as a very good writer, chances are you're going to specialise in certain genres and types of writing forms. For instance, I like the novel as a medium of writing (and apparently short stories now, thanks to the obligatory prose module here at uni) and I typically write fantasy with elements of horror. I couldn't write a contemporary novel, and my brain is barely wired for reading poetry, let alone writing it! (Unfortunately for me, that module is compulsory too.) So seeing my sim(s) churn out poetry books, screenplays, and every kind of novel SO GODDAMN QUICKLY really alienates me. What is interesting in TS3, however, is that your sim submits their books in chapters and they get smaller payments along the way. I think it would be better if they had to go through the struggle of even finding a publisher for them (an author I met had was accepted by the ninety-first publisher) but it's a nice touch

Yes. The money thing. I am secure that my sim family can be millionaires merely by spamming orchids. But you are right ; it gets dull when you have so much money and you have done everything. You can’t even just donate a lump sum to charity on the computer - the maximum amount is 1000. It would be good if you could donate a huge amount and get some kind of buff.

lol that meme about "my male sims vs. my female sims is literally the opposite of what i have. All my male sims are impossibly hot and all my female ones are kinda ok, also i have FAR MORE male sims than female and by default my sims always end up in gay relationship unless i wanna go out of my way to have a story with two hetero sims. I have tons and tons of CC for male aswell but i think that whilst it's way easier to make pretty looking female sims with just the vanilla game, for male sims they always look weird, starting from their frame which is HORRIFIC. Why are the female sims so anatomically correct yet the male sims have weirdly shaped shoulders and arms and no abs pretty much. I hate how TS4's male sims look, and it's crazy cause most modern games aswell as past sims games did males better than TS4.

We can not use our phones in highschool at least when i went. Now they didnt really get too upset if you got caught like texting in class. In middle school they would be more strict but highschool idk they just didnt care a lot but they didnt just let you use them either.

One of the toddler beds and potty chairs can be put in the inventory and placed while you're on a community lot. But also, since you can go into build mode while you're at a community lot (unlike previous versions) it's not that big of a deal. My baby challenge had to take the whole family to community lots in the early days so I made the bar in Henford-on-Bagley toddler and kid friendly. In the second to last episode of my challenge, Grim asked my Baby Mama to be his girlfriend. So I think this current grim is the best because you can actually interact with him. But I liked the death animations better in TS2...especially an elder dying not in good aspiration. That rarely happens in my TS2 game as they all die in Platinum, but the low aspiration is really funny.

Satch I agree except I think there are some problems that people can't solve or take care of for whatever reason, beyond their control or whatever and those are the times I think healthy coping mechanisms are a good thing. And no addiction is good because that means it's taken to an extreme, but something like playing the sims is obviously better than like picking up drugs or alcohol at least IMO. Love your videos! I feel like your understanding of coping mechanisms is a bit wrong. There is a war in my country and I go through some stress about it, TS4 helps me cope with my anxiety and calm down so that I can live the rest of my live somewhat productively. It's not like I can just resolve the stress factors. So, playing games is a coping mechanism. When someone have a problem and they don't do anything about it when it's possible and just play the Sims -- it's not a coping mechanism, it's a substitution or something (I'm not a native speaker, sorry)

In all of my schools we could just have our phones out except for the occasional strict teacher and as long as we were not using them during class but in the halls, before and after class and lunch you could have your phone out.

Last time I went to high school the only time we couldn't use our phones was during class (but if we finished our assignments early or the teacher wasn't instructing we could use them)

when I was in high school use of phones often depended on the teacher but generally we just couldn't use them while the teacher is teaching, and if there's work assigned for us to do that day, until our work is done either, but otherwise had free reign. it was very common for everyone to be on their phones killing time until the class actually started

I legit had a sim in the Sims 3 who was essentially based off of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle since she (in my head) was a big-time Mystery/Thriller writer. The best part was having a page that tracked your books, their sales by edition, and the fact that they actually could show up in the shop and be bought for your own home. I think she had somewhere like 87 books written in her lifetime on the long life-span. And oh boy, those books put her great-grandkids through college lol Sims 4 the only way to keep the books you write is to, well... not publish the main book or make a copy BEFORE you publish. It's really weird.

so the phone depends on the school. In high school, some teachers were fine with us using phones in class, while other teachers refused to use them. As for middle school, you could use them while sitting in the cafe or the two gyms but once class started they had to be in your bag or locker

I know why the Sims 4 doesn't have autosave. I used to play Simcity Societies, and that had an auto save which used to crash the game constantly. It did come out like 10 years before Sims 4, but maybe they hadn't solved that issue yet.

1. it's so hard to find cc and actually decide what's good for the male sim. It's like does this look good? Is this a handsome man? What is a man? 2. I accidentally deleted her marriage...and now he remarried and moved on with more kids. So, I cured my vampire curse, became a mermaid and now live in Sulani with my wife and more kids. The problem....it's now very hard to find fresh meat to have kids with. Everyone has become related.

Satch, secondary schools in England allow students to use phones during break?? My school in Hampshire had a rule that we could take phones to school, but they had to be switched off and put in the bottom of our bag., or they would be confiscated. We could only use them at the end of the day.

No. In America, a lot of schools will take your phone away if you are seen with it in any context, including at lunch. Most kids have them, but they have to keep it hidden all day and can only take it out when they leave school.

I just wanted to add, personally I don’t think it’s right to be anti coping mechanism. I’m anti unhealthy coping mechanisms like staying home alone to play the sims to avoid social anxiety etc. but some mental illnesses require certain coping mechanisms. i don't think it's an american thing to use the phone whenever at school. i think it's more that it's a british thing that won't allow it. in most of europe, a lot of us grew up texting with our phone under the table, while pretending to pay attention to class. it was easier then because smartphones were only starting to become a thing, so our phones had the physical buttons that we could just send the keys, and so we could literally text without even looking at the screen or keyboard, just from feeling the buttons. obviously you were screwed if a teacher caught you, but a lot of them don't care, at least you're not being disruptive to class. and everyone walked around with their phone in hand, sometimes texting other friends, or a significant other. uk schools seem quite different from the rest of europe. you guys have to wear uniforms to school, which in europe, that's usually only a thing for private schools.

The question is not "is playing everyday unhealthy?", it is "is she addicted?". She does seem addicted (and admits it), and being addicted is unhealthy, it's just a fact. So in her case, she plays everyday because she is addicted and it is unhealthy. However you could be playing everyday and still not be addicted. It is not because you are doing something regularly that you are automatically addicted.

Myself, i do play video games most of the time, pretty much all the time. But not so much that it is an addiction, i still do the basic things you should do, taking care of yourself, going out to do the shopping & take care of whatever other things that you need to. Do like to go & see family, though i don't go out & see friends as i haven't had "real" friends since high school (though do talk with people online who are friends there, so do get socialization like that). Dropped out in 2009 after the first term of year 10, as i'd learnt what the basics & anything else is just extra-curricular guffins that wouldn't have been much point for me learning them, along with school being somewhat iffy for me by then. There are those who have dropped out, and have done very well for themselves, or are living decent, humble lives. And i'm doing fine myself, still live at home (as getting a place at the moment isn't that easy & costs a fair bit), never felt the need to "move out at 18 because that means you are an adult & should leave by default, buy your own house, get married & have kids". Apart from having a place that i'd, or my mother would own fully, no loans or nonsense like that, which would be nice of course, i couldn't be bothered & don't care about being married, and have no interest in having kids. Was in a relationship with a guy for a few years which i was happy with, but he ended up leaving in 2017 due to family issues on his side. Was all good between me him still at the end also. That relationship just came naturally, i didn't intentionally want to get into one, it just happened naturally. And i'm not bothered about being single, still the same thing of not wanting to intentionally look for a relationship, but if it just happens naturally & end up with a guy again, then i'm not opposed to that. This ended up being fairly long & on a video about sims memes even, but it relates to the "playing games to cope with parts of your life". I do not play games to "cope" with a void, i'm not lonely either. I still do the basic things, take care of the house when asked of course & go to visit family at times, or when they come to see me. I do out to get the things i need, and if the power goes out or in some other situation where i'm not playing games, along with if the internet is out, that doesn't bother me. Though most of the time i play games or watch videos (i don't go anywhere near that utterly dreadful & totally horrid social media, never have & never will) i wouldn't say i'm addicted. I don't have really much interest to go out & do other random things for the sake of it i will admit, apart from going to see family at times, i can cope without the screentime if need be. So yes, as long as you can do the basic things in your life on a proper scale & aren't glued to your screen constantly, with things falling apart around you & yourself going to shit which would mean you have an addiction, then it isn't a bad thing to be playing games a fair bit. Just have enough of a balance of taking care of yourself & playing the games/watching videos, then you are good as gold, as the saying goes here in australia. And playing games &whatnot a fair bit, is far better than being addicted to illegal drugs, alcohol, nicotine.

abt the male sims being not that popular, i can relate by being the only person that like posting them on gallery, and almost of the posts not having visibility. (And i'm a CAS player).

I'm doing a sim where I complete every aspiration and career, and i did the gardening aspiration a while ago, but since then i now have 5 million+ simoleons and nothing to spend it on, but because of the wealth aspiration each week i earn like 75k in investment, and 75k + a day from gardening. I just harvest now as theres no point selling

Video games have helped me with many things. They have made me more logical and organized, more creative, and I can focus on something for longer periods of time since I play. I also have better reflexes. I learned English with games, and they have helped me through tough times. Video games stimulate the brain more than the vast majority of TV series you can find on Netflix. I also find it more productive to play games than to go to parties, which is why I dislike it when party people tell me that i'm weird for playing video games. If you want to socialize, dance and/or get drunk, then good for you, but don't tell me to do the same. We all have things we prefer doing 🤷‍♀ Sure, it can be an escape from the real world, just like books, series and movies can be. It's not unhealthy as long as you keep taking care of health, your relations, your economy, etc, just like with most things. What I find fun and interesting is to have game phases, for example I usually play Sims 4 when it is very cold and dark outside, and Animal Crossing during the summer while i'm on vacation. ☺

I would love it if you could at least keep a copy of your book when you write one and sell to publisher - even better if it became an option to buy from bookshelves for all households in game. I occasionally name them if there’s actually some specific story I’m telling (like my investigative journalist who became hero of Strangerville then wrote a book about it) but mostly no, I don’t bother to custom name the books, and almost never fill in a description. Why bother? You’ll never see it again. It’s just another overpowered way of making money, though not quite as bad as art or gardening.

We aren't allowed to have phones either but a lot of us do any way. Some schools have given up on the no phone rule or the put it in your locker rule. if your on it in class or the halls they'll take it for the day. you'll get it back before you leave. some schools in the US are more chill about it then others. I also don't think coping mechanisms are bad it makes you feel better as long as you're also working on yourself at the same time. especially if you have a lot of mental health issues that are more permanent or life long as long as it isn't hurting anyone or setting you back I don't really see an issue with it but that's just my opinion. it also may be a bit bias seeing as I use it to cope with a lot of my more long term issues while I'm also in therapy and working on it internally. I don't think it replaces therapy or self work but I think it can be helpful. I also see your POV tho.

So I think The Sims 4 (and all the previous games) have autosave because it is a common thing for simmers to save the game before doing something risky or with RNG chance and then reloading the save when it goes bad. Autosave would mean that you can't control to which point of your game you can come back to.

Honest I downloaded a realistic feet mod simply because I hated that the rest of a sim's body looks fairly accurate to real human anatomy but feet look more like paws since the toes are glued together. But I uninstalled it because I remembered what a foot fetish was and got super uncomfortable with the mod in my game knowing the guy who made this mod probably has a foot fetish and other foot fetish people would probably be using this mod with them. I know a guy who has this mod and even though I pointed this out I don't think he uninstalled it so I guess I know his dirty laundry now 💀

A coping mechanism its only good for a short period of time, when you need something that makes you feel nice or else it would be a disaster for you. But in the end its a trap if you let it, its like alcohol, drugs, food, etc. Games can create addiction, because they make you feel good, forget about your real life problems, and make time go on faster. Its easier than trying to face your problems. I once dated a guy with this problem with wow. He spent his teenager days on the computer because it made him forget his family and school problems, but it absorbed him to a point when he wouldnt even shower ever. When we dated he wasnt on that level, but still being on the computer everyday was the only way he had to live through. This affected our relationship from the beginning, he didnt know how to deal with any negative situation. He rushed all from the beginning, he was very excited and happy, but before our first date (we met in person twice before and texted) he told me that he loved me, and that made me anxious. I knew that the first negative thing he would fall apart. Im a sensitive person and i explained him that, but it was ok, cause i usually recover my mood fast so no worries. I told him to do whatever he wanted, like being at discord with his friends at the evenings as he told me he used to do. But then he wasnt doing so, apparently he didnt want me to feel bad that he was with his friends, but i told him he could do whatever he wanted. He basically blamed on my sensitivity the fact that he didnt want me to feel bad (a negative situation he had to face in case) because he didnt know how to deal with the slightlest shit. Once a friend of his got ill when they were hanging out and he got an anxiety attack. A bad situation he couldnt ran from. He blamed on me his choices, he sent me at 3am a 10min long audio crying saying that it was toxic (trust me it wasnt, i had been in toxics relationships before and he hadnt at that time) that he wanted to play with his friends bla bla. At 3am. I was online at that time for a moment, and he waited for me to be offline to send it so imagine what i found when i woke up. And as i said he rushed all, and when he saw that this was real life, that demanded him not to be with his coping mechanism when he "needed" it, he freaked out and dumped me. Of course, not in person, throught text. We had barely been together a month, and i felt the colateral damage of his problems. The coping mechanism took control of his life, he wasnt on charge of his own because it was easier to sit at the laptop, have a small job selling sandwiches at soccer matches, and allow days to run by. At first i was devastated, after some months just really mad how he tried to blame me when i gave him my trust because i knew what was like to be with somebody controlling you all the time. And i have my own issues too, i play lol because its an easy way to pass the time, but i eventually get sick of it for a period of time because i know i dont play it for the right reasons. Its a hard fight with yourself, but you have to be aware of why you do it if you want to get out of that deep hole. Its easy to get carried away by those things and getting out its a huge journey, but damn, isnt it worth to get your life back? To get control again?

I think the reason why gardening is so profitable is because it is completely broken - just like everything else in the game. Plants and trees disappear ALL THE TIME. They have vanished for years and its not been fixed. Load a game? Garden gone! Travel? Garden gone! Come home from work? Garden gone! Most of my "cash crop" plants are sheltered. Unless you are willing to cheat the growth stage (I have over 120 plants. I am not wasting my time doing that), you might have to wait WEEKS or multiple seasons for them all to grow back. Seasons with no income. Only to have them all turn into little dirt piles the next day. Broken game is broken.

It really sucks men are left out of CC and even the actual game itself. I’m currently playing as Bob Pancakes with his husband Izzy Fabulous (randomly generated townie) and their 4 kids from Bobs previous marriage. It was SO HARD just to find cc in the aesthetic I wanted Bob to dress in, but I could find plenty in female frames so I just figured out which ones worked on him 🫥
