Don't have time to watch this full video? Here is the "quick fix" version • 99 Subaru Impreza No S...
Join me (Paul Danner aka ScannerDanner) and my class at Rosedale Technical College while we troubleshoot a no start problem on a 1999 Subaru Impreza.
This was an unscripted video, everything was filmed live from inside my classroom, with all of my students involved. For each new step in the diagnostic process, I pause to explain what we are doing and why, so this is a longer video than my normal upload, but I promise it will be worth it. Even you veterans that are following me will learn some tips along the way.
If you are looking to go through auto technician training program, I would love to have you as part of my class in person! We are located in Pittsburgh Pa. For more information about Rosedale Technical College go to www.rosedaletech.org
Special thanks to PicoTech.com and Mitchell On-Demand
For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book.
Want even more diagnostic training? Whether you are a DIY trying to fix your own car, someone looking to become an auto technician, or a current auto technician that wants to get more into diagnostics, subscribe to ScannerDanner Premium www.scannerdan... There is a 14 day free trial.
On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!

Loved the detailed explanation on how the coils packs actually worked - clear, precise and extremely helpful on correct diagnosis. One thing is undisputable Paul - your time, effort and unbelievable knowledge have no doubt helped thousands of people, both in the trade and the DIY man. That is something we need to be very grateful and supportive of. Technicians like yourself are quite rare and a refreshing change to the all too common parts changers.

I only checked one sensor ground, but I did check 5 or 6 separate computer grounds. Just because sensor grounds look good does not eliminate the need to check the other computer grounds. Especially when it comes time to call a bad computer.

funny story on that. Subaru has two separate parking light switches! On on top of the steering column that lets you turn the parking lights on with the key off! stupid design if you ask me. One of my students (who works for Subaru) came over while we were troubleshooting it and flipped the switch off. I felt pretty dumb :)

I can thank you enough for sharing this and make us think.

Excellent Video, Paul. It's never easy to point at a component that costs as much as a PCM and blame it without spending a lot of time making sure you're right. But diagnoses like this take a great deal of time and still must be paid for. I wish owners would realize this fact. Only other remark I'd make is that there is usually documentation which describes the operation of a given system, such as 'the PCM grounds the circuit on Pin 39', but you have to look elsewhere in the manual. For me, the time spent doing that is less than 'I don't know what's hot or not'. Please understand that I also realize that you're teaching why the thing worked in the first place, which is absolutely necessary to finding out why it DIDN'T. Keep up the good work!

It was a no com. and I do not have flashing capabilities for this Subaru. Do you think a corrupt eeprom would cause the injectors to be on all the time? I find that unlikely, but then again, I really cannot say from experience what a corrupt eeprom would do. What are some symptoms that your have seen with that? Thanks!

noise on the sensor ground is the same noise that is on the reference. so a simple difference in potential voltmeter reading cancels the noise. this is why sensor grounds go to the computer instead of the block.

Wow what a mission! This engine was sounding scarier and scarier as you tried to crank it. I had a feeling that once you got to the injector circuits that there was some huge input problem or strange wiring like they used an injector positive signal to the alarm horn or something. yea, in hindsight I should have changed the oil first. I just wanted to hear the engine start before spending another dime on this thing. I would have hated to do an oil change only to then tell him his engine was shot. Also surprisingly, not damage to the injectors or coils. It is running great!

Really dificult to tell which of yours videos is the best but maybe this one. The amount of knoledge and experience put in this case is tremendous. Like you said most technicians would put jumper wire seeing that low voltage, and vent round in circle. The amount of risk shown in this case is huge. Where I live many people think diagnostics should be free. I post this video on forums and ask them should this be free. How many people are capable of sorting this out!!! I know many cases where people put large amount of money in parts changeing and still not fixing the car, just because they woun't pay proper diagnostics fee.

Brenndon McGill crazy shit happens with electronics if you don't know what you are doing. The best thing is to change the fucking battery every 3-4 years to avoid jumping the car the wrong way. I had seen a starter stay engaged after the engine was started up, on a Subaru too. Starts up fine, but I hear some grinding noise sounded like a fart for like good 10 minutes, before I relalized the starter was still on. Ended up cutting both battery wires to kill the car. That one too had a dead battery, and all kinds of gizmos went haywire after jumping it, like I used to do with old cars.

@sam111880
@sam111880 9 лет назад
the obd 2 scan tools may indicate a bad sensor or bad module but some time the sensors and actuators could be good and it is a bad wire so one would beable to fix or trace wires and know how to find shorts or opens much more easier with the color code wires and wire diagrams
@sam111880
@sam111880 9 лет назад
and then again you could have many modules but if there is always a way to get the wiring diagrams , DMM , test light (for making it easier) , and the ODB 2 scan tool that should be all that you need to diagnosis any electrical problem as well as a bad sensor /actuator

Another great video Paul. A long way to go to confirm a bad ECM, but worth the trip and very informative, even for us old farts;-) I really do believe it was the jump after the dead battery that did it in, but we'll never know for sure. Using a charger in jumpstart mode on any new car is not a good idea. If you have the radio on with the charger connected, you'll hear what I mean. It could have also been reverse polarity jumped, common mistake.

Thank you, Paul. I have a question for you, I worked on a 1999 Dodge Stratus that would not start, the ECM fuse was blown. I checked grounds and power to the ECM, all ok, but as soon as you try to start, it happen again. One thing that I notice is that the fuse for the starter was 30 amps instead of the 20 amps, so someone was having a problem with the starter solenoid. I replaced the fuse on the ECM for a 25 amp and the car started. Did it reset something in the ECM ?
@sam111880

look at the pin out of the ecm from there you get the colors of what each actuator and sensor has so unbolt ecm quickly uses the wire diagram with it and the fuses boxes then go from there to the obd2 to see what sensor or actuator is troubled ... and from there tracing the specific color wires if need be
@johnmckamy6398

Alternator and computer may have been damaged by reversed polarity. Alternator would have shorted diodes and maybe open fusable link. Computer may be damaged and had blown fuse. Is the computer fuse cleaner indicating recent replacement? Sometimes a little forensics can reveal some hidden history and point to the root cause.

That was a good exploration into the system and it happens, but you Fixed it there was no outside faults triggering The computer just faulty Parts inside computer. When l heard the cooling fan on with the ign on was a good indication that the computer had gone bad, But it still could have been a wiring short, but it wasn't Good video well explained.

Great! I would have jumped to investigating wiring to fuel pump. Remembered a similar pattern of the amateur pulses of a fuel pump you had tested. Key phrase, would have.

I've been thrown the same thing with a dodge neon thay said it was jump started in the rain but couldn't get it to start most likely crossed the cables and so I put a new ecu in it and it runs fine

and this method is more general and can be used on any thing vehicle that is computerized airplane , boat , car , truck ,...etc with an equivalent ecm module , wire diagrams , and sensors/actuators

Why would using sensor ground instead of battery ground, cancel the noise on the 5v reference?

Scary call... Sort of OT, but eons ago, had cust with an old Ford Country Squire wagon, that had a mechanical fuel pump leaking fuel into the crank case. Dip stick indicated maybe 9 - 10 quarts. Against my advice, she elected to resume driving it. Later learned she'd had a crankcase explosion that blew the pan/valve covers off, & started a fire that destroyed hers & several other cars in a supermarket parking lot. Luckily, there were no injuries...

and I just got what the bcm module is used for if it is not integrated into an all in one ecm/pcm . bcm is the module that does the processing of power windows , door locks , wiper or lighting like dimmer sensors ,...etc basically any electrical components that is not engine sensor/actuator (engine specific sensors)

yea, in hindsight I should have changed the oil first. I just wanted to hear the engine start before spending another dime on this thing. I would have hated to do an oil change only to then tell him his engine was shot.

Man i spent 2 hours watching this one, this was a real head scratch-er, I loved it! Didn't you say you had a inkling that it was the PCM from the beginning?
