Loading 9mm with Tite Group and Universal powder with a Lee 356-124-2R bullet. Loading and shooting groups. I wanted to explore the Universal powder. Its a bulky powder with great case fill. It certainly has my attention! Bullet was sized to.356 and seated to 1.125. this batch of bullets was measured at 16 BHN .
For great paper and steel targets...

Hey Elvis! I love these videos! Titegroup has been my go to for all of my hand gun calibers for a while now. I like longshot for +p and magnum. But that universal has peaked my interest. awesome video as always. Great shooting my friend. Can't wait for more

Elvis thanks for sharing this video! You covered a lot of amazing information👍 I'm new to reloading and just recently started casting my own bullets and powdercoating. I was told by an older gentleman with 40years of experience in loading ammo to try the titegroup powder. I'm glad you made a video shooting with titegroup and sharing your powder grains and COL 👌 from seeing your amazing results I will now feel confident in loading my own ammo with the titegroup. Keep up the great videos your awesome! I'm Also looking forward to seeing more video progress on your AK reloading ammo

Good info, the testing can some times lead to more questions than answers ! All those combo's seem to have good results with a stand alone shooting, but it's always fun to work up loads even if it's just for saving powder :-) Looking forward to the AK stuff.

Just a caveat to Elvis and other fellow Reloaders. When Using the Lee micro adjustable charge bar, I've gotten very inconsistent powder drops with low charges(less than 4 grains) of Titegroup. Good test Elvis. Titegroup, Solo1000, Clays and Universal are my favorite 9mm pistol powders. Clean burning. Clays and Titegroup are very economical.

Man... I just want to say thank you for providing the COAL. I made somewhere around 3k bullets this Christmas and started trying to make a dummy fit. Kept having chambering issues even with a properly set factory crimp. The first groove (raised) always catches when chambering, and I could never get a proper taper crimp with the factory crimp die. The 1.125" COAL generally puts the case mouth between the first and second raised grooves and allows for a smooth transitional crimp. I was getting so frustrated. I started off with 9mm years ago, cast a ton of 45ACP bullets and knew how to load the same round nose Lee profile. Thanks Elvis! I've been using your quick powdercoat method for a while now, and now you saved my bacon (maybe). I've never loaded 9mm so short (usually 1.135 - 1.145" in 115gr RN), so I'll need to be careful on loads.
@elvisammo
@elvisammo 6 лет назад
Thanks for taking the time to comment 4thaggie.. The 1.135 works too. I find the 1.145 a little to close to make inconsistent mistakes but do feed in most my guns. The 1.125 seems to be the most reliable ... you can always adjust a little for accuracy if needed. I use just enough crimp to return the flaired case mouth to normal. No taper at all.. happy shooting to ya!!!

I have that same mold except with standard lube grooves. Not only does mine drop heavy too but after powder coating I have to seat them deep because of the Ogive and powder coat to keep them out of the lands and feed properly. By the way good shooting!

Avid Water fowler Hello there... I’m a beginner, made my first successful 500 rounds of 9mm of CFE. But went out and bought 5 pounds of Titegroup. I pay very close attention to my powder fill on when I get to the bullet seating stage. Pretty noticeable with the CFE cause I load 5.1 grains. Will I be able to see my charge ok with the Titegroup? Think I’ll be using around 20% less
@deandeann1541
@deandeann1541 2 года назад
@@damon323 When you load in batches with a single press, once you have a batch filed with a compact powder like tightgroup, say a batch of 100, just shine a penlight on all the cartridges at once. Any that don't have the powder loaded to the same level will stand out. It is an easy, good double check on the powder charges for safety. It works good as a check on hard to see light and/or dense charges.

Elvis, I really enjoyed this video. 1st time on your channel brother. I've been reloading for little over a year now. Mainly 9mm luger using Titegroup (4.1 - 4.3 gr.) and just started reloading .45 ACP. using CFE-Pistol (6.1 - 6.3 gr) . I recently stocked up on some Everglades 9mm JHP 115gr bullets and some 9mm 115gr and .45 ACP 230gr. copper plated RN bullets from Gluten Free Ammo. Going to start reloading the 9mm JHP rounds this week. I mainly use two 9's for target shooting, Walther PPQ M-2 and a Canik TP9-SFx. My .45 target pistol is Walther PPQ 45 auto.Really like your video and you got a new Subscriber!! BTY... Damn good shooting!! Thanks

Nice flying ham hock's. Universal and 231 have been my go to powders for all my standard velocity rounds. 296 and 2400 for my magnum rounds. I went through a period of using the No. 2-9 for my handgun rounds. They gave me a deal on it back in 1998 so I bought a shit load of it. Anyway I'm liking the targets. I think I'm going to have to buy a few hundred of them. Listening to the roosters in the background is kinda soothing. The wife won't have them again. She was attacked by one when she had chickens. I wish I could have seen that.😀 Thanks for another great video. Happy shooting.

With the availability of components being what they are today, I was forced to do the same thing with Hercules Reddot. I got my data from Lyman 45th edition. Groups were no where as tight but found that from 3.5 grains to 4 9 grains, those loaded at 4.5 grains were the most accurate out of my Security 9.

I find that Universal offers lower pressures and good accuracy. It is not the most accurate compared to other powders I have used but the lower pressure offers up lower re-coil and comfort. Also, Universal has load data for most pistol calibers. It is a very good powder.

Great work and I think your testing is very useful and helpful for us out in the reloading world. Would you think about taking the 2 most accurate loads from each powder and shoot at 25 yards to narrow the choice down. Kinda the way I run tests, always trying to take out the "human" element of each grouping. Cheers from Canada
@elvisammo
@elvisammo 6 лет назад
Yep... That's my thinking too. I plan on it. The human element is the biggest one for me to consider. Sometimes we feel good about our shots and sometime we know we screwed a few up.. I felt about 95 Percent.. This percent will decrease the further out I go.. Stay tuned! : )

Nice shooting Elvis, I believe that any-one of those load combinations will pass as accuracy loadings. They will set in "X" ring accuracy @25 yards which is two inches, So Now you know, It's on you and the Marksmanship, Not the gun, not the loading, Not the bullet. you have set up a foundation to build on or improve on. Good Shoot'en Buddy. (I wish we had a Piggly Wiggly up here in the North). I could use one of those White salted smoked hams this winter. Mummmm. Dave.
@elvisammo
@elvisammo 6 лет назад
yeah... Kinda hate not having any good excuses! I'll see if I can find one of those White salted smoked hams....
@Thorsaxe777
@Thorsaxe777 6 лет назад
Well. In the way of accuracy, sight radius has a lot to do with it, The closer the sights are together the more the error in alignment is amplified, Thus placing the shot outside the aiming area. (That Blurr of the target you see in the distance) Longer Barrels shoot mainly with more accuracy because of less error in lining them up and being able to hold them in alignment with each other. So don't kick yourself as it is difficult to do repeatably, That was Fine shoot'en for 12 1/2 Yards. Here is another crazy thing, because of fitting some pistols are good 25-yard guns, However, the accuracy falls apart at 50-yards, I have done ransom rests tests on 1911's and see this happen. I believe it to be fitting at the barrel and barrel bushing fitting to the pistol. anyway, Looks like you are on a good quest. Btw, I would be willing to Pay for the Ham and shipping. Hehehe.. Those have a unique flavor, unlike any other ham. It's a good substitute for those basketball Yankie hams we have here. Dave.

Thor's Axe777 well said dude, well said spot on as usual. As for hams if you have any Amish communities near you, you might want to take a trip out to buy some ham. I buy all my hams from the Amish and man they are amazing at curing and smoking ham and other meats.

@ernstkliveman8476
@ernstkliveman8476 5 лет назад
Well, sorta true...at close ranges with pistols. There's a couple of things. People are moving more and more to carbines, and so, careful load development is relevant. That's why this video is important... At 1.125 COAL, and a 124-125 grain FMJ or LRN, this is getting into a compressed load with Universal (note that at that COAL the bullet won't fit into some magazines). With a plain Jane 9mm carbine, and 4.3 grains of Universal, that puts you into the 1350-1380 ft/sec range with WSPs (actual and Quickload predicted). So, yes...at 25-75 yards an accuracy load does make sense...a lot. You can go from .5 inch groups close in this video up to 4"-6" groups down "there" at my bench with a 995ts if you don't pay attention to the load development. And, yes, Quickload shows that Universal has higher Ballistic Efficiency, as compared to Unique or Titegroup when you match for pressure and ft/sec MV. Now, as you go to 100 yards and perhaps 250, and if you're a Ninja with a scope, all hell breaks loose because the bullet becomes unstable and drops below hypersonic. It then gets comical in terms of a 9mm POI, relative to a good .22 and a 26" barrel. So, yes...tighter groups are better with a 9. There comes a point in this game, however, when you switch over to a 150 grain FMBT from PPU stuffed in a 7.62x39 FC case at 2.200 stacked in a SKS with 21 grains of N120.

I'm new to reloading and got a bottle of BE86. 124 grain is the 9mm bullet, what power load would be good?

Nice shooting elvis you encyclopedia of reloading and casting info. You made it so easy for me to start casting my own 9mm bullets. What is the heaviest 9mm bullet you have shot out of your glock? Im casting from a lyman 147gr mold, using wheel weights the bullets come out at 158gr. They seem to shoot good with adi ap70 powder with 3.2gr.
@elvisammo
@elvisammo 6 лет назад
Hey James.. sounds like you might be from the OutBack.. (ADI) That's about as heavy as i've loaded 9mm 158gr. For subsonic ammo. The bullet style will help dictate reliable feeding.Thanks for watching and Happy Shooting Mate! : )

Yes sir adi (australian defense industry) there realy strict with the gun laws over here can't even use semi auto rifles but can use semi auto pistols 10round limit on the magazines. haha we cant even use a pump shotgun here anymore but i try and have fun with that we do have.

I might have missed it...were these sized to .356? Great shooting! I haven't tried Universal yet, since it's very similar to Unique, which I've got a bunch of. I'll have to pick some up sometime and give it a shot. EDIT: nevermind...you said they were .356 in another comment.

Nice save on the edit.. : ) I should learn by now not to leave info like that out... You'll probably find that universal shoots quite a bit cleaner if thats of interest.. Those Hangfire vids are crazy good!

Yep... Universal is cleaner than unique. Meters nicely too.

I have now changed to Unique because it fills the case much better than TG and H700-X. Using that exact bullet, I load 4.5 grn.

Great video. Have you ever tried the Hodgdon CFE Pistol Powder? When I first started loading I was looking for some power suggestions and the two most popular seemed to be CFE and Tightgroupe. I really like the CFE Pistol but after seeing your video, I will have to try the Tight Group and the Universal. Thanks for all your videos Elvis Ammo. They have definitely helped me out so much when I first started loading and continue to do so. Happy Loading and keep up the great work.

Dead Money ...you are the exact reason for doing these videos. . throw out some other options for loads. While at the same time exploring for myself. I haven't tried the cafe pistol. I always want to and then can't get it for one reason or another. Tite group is a staple. looks like universal has my attention!

I'm big fan of CFE Pistol, switched from Titegoup as it seems lot cleaner . Stuff is not "baked on" like with TG

I'm just starting with reloading and plan on testing with Titegroup and CFE Pistol in both 9mm & 40 S&W. Looks like universal is something I might want to look at as well. Looking forward to seeing Elvis experiment more with it.

So I just got into reloading and I'm learning as I go. Can you make a video on how to figure out the charge to use from start to Finnish? I'm using cci500 primers and unique powder
@mdd1963
@mdd1963 4 года назад
Look in a reloading manual or two with your caliber, bullet/type, or at least the same general weight....and do not start with max charges, No one blew up their pistol with loads right smack in the middle of the recommended start charge/max charge....
@6Sally5

This really made my day! You have recreated exactly my ammo (except for being pink). I settled on 3.7 gr for Titegroup. So...for pc bullets, do you go by cast lead or jacketed bullet load data? I’m really back and forth about it. BTW...not having access to wheel weights in CA, all of my bullets are cast just from range scrap. I usually get a BHN of around 13. Keep up EARL! 🔫😁👍
@elvisammo
@elvisammo 6 лет назад
sounds like all is well 13 BHN no prob. one of the comments on here says 3.7 is used in their competition pistol. As far as load data for lead vs jacketed you should be back and forth. : ) I use a little of both... Mostly FMJ. Just gotta keep some logic in mind, Like for instance How deep the bullet is seated. As always start low and work up looking for danger signs.... Too bad you dont have any of these ugly pink bullets though!! : )
@deandeann1541
@deandeann1541 2 года назад
Alan - I use cast bullet data for my powder coated reloads, my logic being that powder coating is most similar to cast in softness and the lands engrave more easily than jacketed bullets will, so pressure data will be most similar if using cast bullet data. By the way 3.7 gr. tg is one of my favorite loads - economical, clean and powerful. Accurate in my gun (an American made Walther PPS), too.

Tightgroup is a great 9 mm powder. Strong and very clean with a wide range.
@deandeann1541
@deandeann1541 3 года назад
I haven't loaded9mm in a few months though, but iirc tightgroup isn't either the best or worst at weighing. I really prefer easy weighing powder, so many powders (flake) can be frustrating in pistol ammo.
@mdd1963
@mdd1963 5 лет назад
One does not simply substitute jacket bullet data for use with lead, (especially near top end loads) which gets a better gas seal, and, generally requires less powder for decent velocities.....; at top end jacketed loadings, substituting a lead bullet would be an overpressure load.

I just bought an aftermarket barrel for my (new to me) gen 3 G22 .40 SW... It was inspired by Fortune cookie's Glock barrel video. I have other Glocks in 40 and haven't had any issues but want to be on the safe side with this new range toy. Did I waste my money?
@elvisammo
@elvisammo 6 лет назад
no I don't think you wasted your money at all Keith.. Personally i wouldn't have spent no more than I had too. I would be glad to have barrels of different kinds just for testing! : ) Really the bottom line is we don't want the brass to get messed up.. Maybe the 40 is most likely to do this? Maybe it's just really hot loads? I see a little bit of the glock smile but not that often and never from my own brass. One advantage you have now is to shoot groups with each barrel to see if one has an advantage over the other .... Happy Shooten!
