What are Enneagram Type 9’s wings? Do they use both the 8 wing and 1 wing? Beth and Jeff McCord discuss the type 9’s wings, their functions, and how to use them for personal awareness and growth.
Chapter Markings:
00:00 - Introduction
03:48 - Enneagram Type 9 Summary
08:24 - Meet Type 9s Brandon and Laura
15:22- Enneagram 9 wing 1
32:08 - Enneagram 9 wing 8
The type 9’s wings are the 8 and the 1 because they are the numbers right next to the 9 on the enneagram symbol. Type 9s use these wings in varying degrees in both healthy and unhealthy ways. This podcast discusses how each wing influences the person’s main type and personality, how to know which wing you use more, and how to use these wings for personal awareness and growth.

9w8 here. I don't regret when my 8 anger comes out because I've usally allow things to go on creating problems for toooooooo long. I don't like being a victim and by the time my 8 comes out it puts a stop to any stupid or illegal drama others are trying to inflict on me. The 8 protects me and my family.

I'm 9w8 and I'm passive aggressive. When aggressive hits there was typically lots of thought and time that got me there. So I also rarely regret when I stand up to things that aren't correct.

Thank you! I'm recovering from a narcissist spouse and all of the things are spot on with my reactions! It's been a year and half and I finally feel like I can make sense of myself!

I totally get “the rule” thing, but at some point I realized following the rules still didn’t make people happy and it became so exhausting. Now I lean on my wings a lot to try to assert myself more.

I am a nine with a one wing. I’m very empathetic and put others needs before my own. I cannot tolerate unfeeling people that don’t recognize a crisis someone else is going through. And don’t act appropriately. My siblings aren’t talking to me because only 2 of my 6 siblings recognized and expressed condolences when I lost a great grandchild at 7 weeks old. And because I expressed my displeasure I am the bad one, even though they did not act appropriately.

I have just recently begun to understand that I may be a 9. But I have a history of just losing my temper and have had hard time relating that to being a lover and promoter of peace, not just a non-aggression treaty but true peace cominh from a point of everybody having the space that they need to be themselves. Anyway, I read some time ago that this difficulty with controlling temper was actually a 9 trait and since then a lot is beginning to make sense. Also, so nice to hear you guys talk about those thoughts of resentment and the rage, and not just the "oh, I looove bringing people to understand each other" (I mean, I do to, but there's more and that's not as pretty so can we please not pretend it's not there?) Don't know if you guys from the panel and Beth read this but if so I would like to ask if you have experienced that people tell you if they'd experienced your rage (or similar) that "now you're showing your true face". And if so, how have you dealt with that?

Absolutely, thank you for tuning into the podcast and for bringing up this important question. It's true, Type 9s do indeed experience a range of anger, from mild frustration all the way to explosive rage. Often, a Type 9 will try to keep their anger at bay by ignoring it, numbing themselves, disassociating, or by maintaining the facade that everything is alright. However, much like trying to hold a beachball underwater, eventually, it will burst to the surface with force. A Type 9 can only suppress their anger for so long before it eventually erupts, either internally or externally. This often surprises both them and others around them, as neither party was aware of the anger simmering beneath the surface. It's far more beneficial for Type 9s to acknowledge their feelings of anger or frustration and then express them before they reach this explosive point. This is a difficult task for a Type 9, as they often fear that expressing themselves will create tension or conflict with others. However, by not asserting themselves in a healthy manner, they will eventually create discord within themselves and in their relationships. I hope this insight proves helpful to you.😊
