This question comes up frequently. Spot-metering is a craft, every picture is different and success is based on experience and I didn't get it right the first time! A programme based on church interiors explaining my technique is scheduled for premiere to subscribers on 5 July, preview to members 31 May. Regarding locking the exposure, I can explain that now. On Olympus/OM System cameras when you set the AF Mode to S-AF (not C-AF), half-depressing the shutter-button before taking the shot will lock the exposure but don't release pressure on the button between the two disciplines. You will lose the reading. This may be different on other camera makes.
