The Doobie Brothers were a classic rock band formed in the early 1970s. Later in the decade they transformed into a yacht rock styled band. Both versions of the band produced a number of memorable hits. The Doobie Brothers disbanded in the early 1980s, and reunited briefly near the end of the decade. They were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A great band in all its incarnations. South City Midnight Lady is one of my favourite songs of all time.

When I think of the Doobie Brothers, I always think of the first five albums. Fantastic music!

Tom Johnston was the spring that made the band cool tight and driving.

Can't believe no mention of John McFee by name who has been a key member of the band since '79. Not a songwriter or lead singer but an amazing multi-talented/instrument musician and an important influence on the band's sound for decades.

Great video You forgot to mention that Marc Russo joined the band in 1996 and added a distinct color to the music of this band

If you get a chance to see the DBs during their 50th Anniversary Tour, GO ! I just saw them in Alpharetta, GA, Jul 13th, 2024, with Robert Cray as the opener. The Doobie Brothers are better than when I saw them in Miami, 1974. They put on a helluva show well worth the extreme heat that day in Hotlanta and the price of Admission.

Excellent! But, you failed to mention and probably don't know the real story that when Tom Johnston's "Another Park Another Sunday" was moving up the charts like a rocket, and that the "powers that be" who were the controlling radio executives didn't like the lyrics "..and the radio just seems to bring me down" as they felt that it was a slant to radio. So they used their power and pressure to take the song off of the DJ radio playlist and unfairly it quickly fell from grace. Tom didn't write those lyrics to condemn radio, but to message his lost love that when he listened to these types of sad songs throughout the breakup that sad songs brought him even more depression being without his love, which is the reality that many of us have suffered through those same emotions in our lives one time or another. "Another Park Another Sunday" was a heart cry a serious but beautiful classic love song written by Tom when he was going through a breakup at 17, and certainly destined to land in the top ten Billboard charts. The song didn't fade because of "competition" from other artists. The band with it's numerous hits were already established having a large fan base. "Another Park Another Sunday" was on it's own trajectory to the top of the charts before being shot down by supposed "friendly fire". -Larry G. Loveland, Colorado

Fun fact about AP,AS: The song was originally titled, “I’ll Keep On Giving” from a demo the band shopped to record labels in 1970. Totally different lyrics, similar chord structure, and the melody was very similar. The sound is harder edged particularly during the solo. The demo was bootlegged much to the band’s chagrin but it’s still out there. eBay has it titled as, “Introducing The Doobie Brothers.” Check it out!

WOW you know the inside info on that one. I grew up with the Doobies. And I know the song SO well (as all their classic non McDonald stuff) but I never knew that. I'm not surprised though. The music business is completely controlled by people into money with the added ability to the populous's brains as tiny as possible. Allan Holdsworth may be the greatest musician in history, revered by Van Halen, Vai, Lifeson, McLaughlin, Santana, etc and nobody knows that, OR can even assimilate what he does because their brains have been kept the size of a walnut by the record producers. As incredible as he was, he had no backing. I went off track a bit but it's a similar "control" thing.

Thanks for this. I’ve loved that song forever, always knew that “radio” line, but never connected it with an insult of radio. Radio definitely sucks now, so I’ll listen to this from now on with a new sense of appreciation

I'm the RU-vid bass troll, I guess. I believe these guys never recovered their past greatness because Tiran Porter's bass guitar and vocals were suppressed and downplayed on Cycles and thereafter.

Thanks for sharing! If you have a minute, we tried our hand at some original blues tunes. As fellow music fans, we'd love if you'd check it out. It's on our channel. Don't be too tough on us :)

This is incredible. Since we've been working more on building our YT presence, we've gotten a lot of Doobie Bros. fans - which means I've watched a LOT of DB covers and videos. I had no idea about a lot of this! Although I was around during all of this, I only knew the "standard" hits - China Grove, Long Train, Black Water and Listen to the Music. I didn't realize how versatile they were until recently. Thanks again for posting this.

Good video, but please get a human to do the narration in the future. Those pauses at inappropriate times and lack of needed pauses at other times is very annoying.
