I have deliberately shunned Timex, if I'm being honest, thanks to an obscenely noisy Expedition a few years ago. Will this Waterbury change my mind about the brand? Well, yes. So much so that I've just ordered another one. Shop around, pick one up for less than $60USD and you'll have a real peach of a budget chrono. Cheers, Jody

Got my first Timex Diver as a kid in the 70s and I still remember the shop my parents got it from as it was my first day at junior school. I have a Scout, a 76 automatic and another that I got pre-owned that looks a bit Explorerish. Timex has a place in my heart.

While I was a working man, I couldn't wear wristwatches at work, so I used cheap belt loop watches, or pocket watches. When I retired, I decided to get into wristwatches and bought a Timex Expedition to start my collection. I loved the look and feel of the watch, but after a month or so, I noticed that it was losing almost a minute a week. I changed the battery hoping it was a bad battery, but it still kept losing time. So, I hung it up in my bathroom to use as a mini clock. After about a month, I went to reset the time and discovered that the time was dead on! Apparently, if I wear the watch, it runs slow, but if it is hanging on the wall, it keeps very good time. Regarding the noisiness: I discovered this in the middle of the night, sitting on the throne. I thought my faucet was dripping because I kept hearing this drip, drip, drip, drip... but it was the Timex ticking up against the wall, which seemed to add some reverb to the sound. It makes a nice, small wall clock, and the Indiglo comes in handy when fumbling around in the dark in the middle of the night. I have moved on to nicer watches, but still like my mini wall clock.

Timex is such an underrated Watch-Company.. Yes, there are mostly loud ticking quartz movements, Yes, most of them dont even have stainless steel.. but they are dirt cheap, reliable, accurate, have great straps, a great variety of styles, a lot of them have this nice vintage military inspired styling, and you never have the feeling, that you throw your money out of the window.

The slogan really does tell the story. I love my 2004 Expedition, bought in New Orleans because I was at a conference and didn't want to miss any of the sessions I'd signed up for. I don't really mind the ticking (my hearing's suffered from 30 years of rock guitar playing, so YMMV :D). Over the last sixteen years the little blighter's taken everything in stride - getting soaked, banged into things, dropped onto various unforgiving surfaces, stepped on, pretty much everything except run over by a truck, and beyond some scratches it just keeps on keeping on.

Hiya and fun fact. The Indiglo Timex movements run a 3 volt battery to support the dial illumination when used.Most quartz analogues use 1.55 volt. This simply causes the stepper motor to move with more gusto. That's the reason for the loud tick.Cheers.

One of my first purchases when I got into watch collecting was one of these. At the time I bought mine it was only $45. The reason I bought it was it’s good looks, and it was my first chronograph. I have a Timex mechanical hand wind that was my first watch ever. I recurved it for my birthday in the third grade, which was in 1960! It still runs perfectly, and is my most accurate mechanical watch. I wore it as a kid when I mowed yards around town. The finish is awfully corroded, but it HAS taken a licking and kept on ticking!!! It is a permanent member of my collection, but then I am a very sentimental old man. Great review as always Jody!!!

After one year of watching your video, I got myself a white dial 40mm diameter with tachymeter scale, weekender chronograph at about USD55. Always wanted a tachymeter watch at budget. Nice looking piece and definitely a strap monster. It would be a good weekend, weekday, casual & formal watch for me. Also a fantastic watch to wear at night if I ever need to check the time in total darkness. No loud ticking on this one, except when chronograph timer is started. Cheers!

This is a great watch for high school or college students. Stylish, well made, inexpensive. Second hand lined up! Hopefully Timex comes out with styles I can't get anywhere else. A friend asked his 92 year old mother what she thought of Timex, and she replied "Timex makes cheap watches." So Timex has a reputation to overcome. I have more money than wrists, so my limited resource is wrist time. Therefore I'll buy more expensive and unique watches.

I own the even cheaper Timex Weekender chrono. With a plated brass case and a printed watch face lacking the Waterbury's recessed sub-dials, the Weekender is an even more plain vanilla, built-to-budget timepiece. I should also disclose that I am heavily biased against quartz movements and instead adore automatics. My favorites being my beloved Seiko Alpinist and the dressy SARB033. Having said all that, I think Timex is doing fantastic things with their budget chronos. The dials, albeit simple, are clean, well thought out and classically styled. And as much as I appreciate traditionally lumed watch faces and handsets, I must reluctantly concede that Timex's Indiglo is hands down the best watch illumination technology out there. The fact that it is unobtrusively built into the traditional watch crown is a brilliant design engineering decision. And while the flyback chrono reset function of mechanical chronographs is coveted by many, I sheepishly admit that I find the slow-mo visual drama of the Timex chrono reset far more satisfying. Finally, as battery sucking as the Indiglo watch illumination must be, my Timex Weekender Chrono far outlasts my William L. 1985 quartz chronograph, which has required two battery changes while the Timex is still chugging along on its original battery. Oh, and for what it's worth, I've found Timex's chrono movement to be nearly silent. I'm still aspiring for a mechanical chronograph, but I consider my Timex chrono to be a no-apologies addition to my watch collection.

Just got a timex mk1 quartz in the mail and it’s sitting on my wrist right now, I rather like it. If they could improve the materials and raise the cost not TOO much I think they’d be selling a lot more watches than they are now! They have a lot of great styles that are classic and timeless but many of them come across as really cheap and flimsy. If they can get into the Seiko 5 range without going over $120 US or so I think they’d be in great position to compete better. Great review

Hi Jodi. Very good review as always. Thank you! I't funny you released this today. I watched a review from a while ago from the Time Teller with the Timex Expedition Chronograph. After watching and seeing the price point I had to go check it out. Well along with picking one up for my son and myself, one of their field chronographs caught my eye. The TW2T10700, a 40mm with arabic numbers and the same movement cased in an aluminum retro field watch style case on a NATO strap. On Amazon for $39 USD I couldn't resist. I must admit I've overlooked Timex for a LONG! while now. Looks like they've upped their game and I haven't been paying the least bit of attention. Timex was my first watch as a 6yr old and had several over the years but just kind of piled them up with the cheap digital watch group, not that there's not a place for that but Casio had my attention as I felt them better value for money compared to the two. Watching your's and Jory's reviews made me make the purchase and we'll see what we get. Thanks again for your videos reviewing these watches and your attention to detail whether it's $10 Timex or a $10K Rolex. It's a pleasure watching your videos.

I’ve had Timex Ironman watches for about 30 years and highly recommend them, although I do have several comparable Casios, which I now wear more often. I have two Timex Intelligent Quartz watches, a GMT and a Flyback Chronograph. My latest Timex purchases are two MK 1 Steel watches. A three hand and a chronograph that uses the same movement as the review watch. The three hand is my loudest watch, but it is only annoying if I try wearing it to bed. The Chronograph’s small second hand is much quieter. I really like having the chronograph minute sub-dial being 30 minutes versus a harder to read 60 minute. The chronograph minute hand is a jumping hand, which I prefer over a sweeping hand.

Being in the process of moving to Naugatuck, CT, which borders on much larger Waterbury, I'm pleased to see Timex commemorating its birthplace and long-time home (they were there until the 1960s, when they moved to nearby Middlebury) by naming a line of watches for it. I like the extra numbers and ticks on the Weekender, but if that doesn't matter to you, I'd go for this one for the strap (the chrono buttons are a little nicer on the Waterbury too in my opinion). I'm just starting to learn about watches, and have watched a number of your vids recently. Another thing about the Weekender Chrono is that it is made of brass with a plated finish. I believe the Waterbury is stainless steel. However, the plated finish can be removed from Weekender Chrono, and it makes an absolutely stunning watch. It develops a patina that makes it look like a watch costing hundreds if not thousands. A Timex with a brass case is easily my favorite everyday watch (I have the chrono model and the diving bezel model with 100m WR). Google "Timex stripping a brass finish" to see some examples. I just sanded mine off starting with 220 grit and working down to 2000 grit. Also google "brass boiled egg patina" on how to get the patina over night.

I'm with you Jody on being put off from Timex watches due to the ridiculous loud ticking. But this one does look really nice. I'm assuming its pretty quiet too?

Just to be clear, i just found out about di indiglo function on Timex Waterbury TODAY, like, it's crazy, i've been wearing this watch almost 2 years since i bought it from a friend, but he didn't tell me that it comes with such feature. So the battery died, and i change the battery, but suddenly when setting out the date and time, and i notice when i pushed the crown, the background color change a lil bit, i thought it was my eyes. But i was curious, and turn off the light, and BOOM. I'm like a small kid infront of a toy store, pure joy. LOL, this might be the best purchase i've ever had in a watch. Would like to know how long the battery last if we use the indiglo feature a lot tho... I'm so excited to show this feature to my GF tomorrow. LOL i just keep smiling right now hahahaha

Not a fan of chronographs but the function on this to independently change the hour sorts out daylight saving adjustments as well as being able to adjust easily for holidays which makes this worth a punt. Hope its better than the Timex mechanical watches I have had in the past.

Where can I get the best place to put on my four day old Timex weekender chronograph. Along with replacement of the Crystal to a sapphire Crystal.

Timex now is THE part of watchmaking history in any angle of view. Must have for every collector. And this one is good enough for any collection. Im not a timex fan, but my respect to this brand.

Curses I got this watch when it was close to it's release for $130 . Either way it's a nice sharp watch that I love to wear to work and get a lot of compliments on it. And ohhh that strap, Timex rocks it on their straps their partnership with the S. B Tanning is a great I'm a Timex watch collector and these S.B. Tanning straps can hold their own against a leather straps in much higher price ranges. For even $70 this watch is a no brainer.

I think mkI mechanical in 36mm will be a hit, so very close to my first ever watch - a pin and plate field Timex made is Scotland.

Got my Timex TW2R85300 a few days ago. Pretty cheap as it does not have the Indiglo or any lume but I find it to be classy enough to be a dress watch or a casual outfit upgrade.

Nice t-shirt collection. I particularly like the F1-themed ones, but interesting he has that t-shirt from a relatively obscure public university on the central coast of California - California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

Maybe I missed it, but after you expressed your distaste at a previous Timex being noisy I was hoping to hear you discuss how audible any ticking was in this watch.

Odd markings on that top right register, doesn't match 20ths. Will it measure chrono hours?

Love the indiglo function; I can't get past the date window placement either. If they amended that, and made a solar version ...

I had a seiko 5 quarts day date from the 80's (a rare beast), i think it disappeared on a random bedside table perhaps nearly twenty years ago. It was the closest thing to my favourite rolex date just that i can't afford. Is there something like it out there. I hate automatics, not into adjuating the time weekly and getting it serviced for more and more. I find modern seiko quartz and watches like this one appear odd with their thick sided straight flat round edge.

I have one of the Timex Scout 43 Expedition watch. It's not noisy. Maybe they fixed that? It's a little more inaccurate than you'd expect from a quartz, but it looks good. It works good. I got mine as a customer return from Amazon for $18.

If you like this, have a look at the weekender chrono, very nice colors, cheap, looks great on a nato strap.

Having 2 Timex in my collection, I must say that indiglo is not draining batery that much. It lasts 2 or 3 years even. Might be that I rarelly use it. Before smartwatches started poping up, I used indiglo as a party trick, quite often. It was awesome to show of that my normal analog watch can glow better than digital Casios. We were young, broke guys from East Europe, and my Timex watch was a rock star. Now, regular people just look at it and say - meh, just go and buy cheap smartwatch, they glow better... Makes me feel sad.

They're still making it here, that's down south from Manila...I used to have the MacGyver military green watch during the 80's. Thanks for this review...oh and that piece is being sold here(Manila) around $75 tax included...

Great review, as always! Excellent watch at th 55-60 USD price point, and Indiglo is just super fun. At the full, $100+ price, though, I'd recommend the Citizen AT0200-05E, which has become my daily driver. No Indiglo, but the Eco-Drive movement is excellent, and it's a bit more cleanly finished than the Timex. Not to bag on them, though, they're great for the money and I own a few!
@RobotMonkeytron
@RobotMonkeytron 3 года назад
That said, prices on the Citizen have been really volatile lately, often quite overpriced. Keep an eye on it, and you can grab one for around 130 USD or so, and it's well worth it at that price!
