A Blind Person Describes What the World Looks Like 

I think trying to imagine what seeing feels like for a person blind since birth, is like us trying to imagine a new color

Never felt this much gratitude for having eyes

everyone’s talking about blindness, but nobody is talking about how lou literally saved tyler from jumping, without even being able to see him?? and how he returns there every day in hopes of stopping someone else? that’s a true hero 💕

When I was a 13 old boy I moved into a small country town with my dad and no mother. Life was good and had no problems. Across the road from our home I met a woman in her 30s confined to an iron lung. Somebody had to be with her all the time in case the motor that worked that machine keeping her alive stopped working and help out by operating it manually . I didn't know it at the time but she made me appreciate life with just the simple act of breathing. Was good little town, I even met my wife there around the same age and started living together at 17. We're now in our 60s...living and working all over Australia. I've been blessed and think now and then of my friend Barbara in the iron lung.

“Me trying to describe nothing to you is just like you describing something to me”. Those words are just incredible

I had to describe something to a blind person before. She was born that way. We both agreed that the best way I would describe what I was looking at would be to compare it to a sound or emotion. I compared warm colors to high pitch loud sounds and/or excitement, and cool colors to low pitch mellow sounds and/or calmness. I did my best to formulate whatever she could in her mind. It was the most complex, frustrating, yet inquisitively exhilerating thing I've ever done in my life!

I love how subtly they just made a suicide prevention short film. So subtle, they didn't even need to add that annoying life-line disclaimer: "If you or anyone you know is having suicidal thoughts please call..." It was a beautiful story.

Lou is an Angel, helping people who want to give up see life from a different perspective. He touches people's lives in a marvelous and hopeful way.

Ironically enough, it's Lou who teaches Tyler how to "see".

Lou is the golden gate guardian, saving the suicidal by revealing the beauty they were born into but have forgotten how to see. [Edit: No one cares which bridge it is. If you're commenting to correct my statement, you've missed the point of the entire video.]

My fiancee is blind. The thing i found interesting is that she does not regret not having her sight. In many ways she experiences what we all do, but on others it is completely different. Trying to expereince life from another perspective is incredibly helpfull. We all live in our own separate universes, where we are at its centre. It is good to try and step out every once in a while to try and put things into perspective.

What a fascinating story. So well written, too. Earlier this year (2022), I had an eye injury while at work. Unfortunately, the result of my injury blinded my left eye. My right eye was in bad shape, and was all I had to rely on. Five months after my eye injury, a cornea transplant surgery was performed. Three days after my surgery, I woke up that morning with the gift of vision in my injured eye again. Thank God! And thank the person who donated their cornea after they passed on. I wish I knew who my donor was. I wish I could see them and thank them with a hug. Soon after discovering my vision again, a friend asked me if I can see things and people my donor could see. If a cornea could have some sort of reflective memory. A deep conversation ensued. Regaining my vision back made me appreciate the color of fruit. How rich in color they are. When people ask me hiw much of my vision I got back, I tell them, it’s like seeing everything in 4k. But what I also discovered with my newfound vision in my left eye is, how much I was able to see things in my life, people in my life, differently. Some in a positive way, and others, in a negative way. Both positive and negative awakening my way of looking at my life. There has to be a deeper connection with our vision and the brain. How both can interconnect with together forming inner and outer visual inspiration. To see and then form thoughts. Or, to form thoughts to see. Whatever the case may be, seeing again has made me see my life differently.

Our eyes give us access to so much beauty and wonder that often goes unnoticed

That was unexpectedly and unusually moving. Tear swelled up in my eyes when I noticed all the beauty around me. Life is beautiful.

I know its not nearly comparable but I escaped my family on a family trip because they was too much stress and negativity amongst us I left to skate around the popular areas of the city and came across a homeless man with a guitar playing beautiful tunes. He complimented my roller skates and asked me a small question about them and then I asked him about music. Soon enough I began singing with him and then talking about all the beautiful things in life we take for granted and dont get to enjoy the “small” things because how overwhelmed we are. An hour and half later we had two other strangers sitting with us in a circle communicating about love and happiness. Usually I avoid any interaction with men I dont know especially as im alone but this was definitely an eye opener, a refreshing experience.

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a blind person. The concept of explaining colors would be difficult but I thought if I found a common reference it might be possible. I asked him if he ever had various flavors of ice-cream, he indicated that he had. I told him imagine the 31 Flavors of Ice-cream at the neighborhood parlor and how many of the ice-cream flavors had the same texture but tasted vastly different and told him that is how colors are but for the eyes! Different color shirts for example might all feel the same but they have different colors in much the same way ice-cream of the same texture feels the same never-the-less tastes different.

Lou helped him to be mindful. If you’re ever stressed or overwhelmed, talk yourself down, ask yourself these questions. What does the sky look like? What does that mean? Mindfulness helps to calm extreme anxiety. This video is sweet.

every so often when i feel down i come back to this video. i’ve never been one to think after it “wow i see the world differently now” but for some reason i always get cheered up after finishing it. it never gets boring, never gets old, this story just makes me happy without rhyme or reason. thank you

The thought of describing colours and things as feelings, tastes or sounds is also a knew sensation that makes colours a lot more prettier. All of our senses are there to make sure we experience life on our planet to the fullest. Learning to appreciate the small, mundane things in this over saturated, fast pace world, is life-changing.

It's crazy how we see every single day but struggle to find ways to describe it...

And this is why The Perfect Amount of Awful is absolutely beautiful and horrible all at once.

What I like about this short narrative and the meaningful lesson behind it is that we clicked on this video for the instant reward of watching something easily digestible and entertainment, but, despite not being what we expected, it kept us from clicking off using a captivating narrative to help us process everything. If this guy made a video telling us to appreciate everything in your existence, ours minds would, unconsciously, discard that information immediately. But, by making us engaged in story, it tricked us into reflecting about the video and finding meaning in it.

I often come back to this video because its one of the most incredible things I’ve ever watched. It gives me a new perception of the world around me and tbh gives me a sudden burst of happiness and motivation lol. It’s amazing how much detail is in every little thing that we are so used to we just pass on and don’t pay much attention to. I tried going blindfolded for 2 hours. I had to try to navigate without using my vision and it helped me gain motivation to do things. I’m in love with this video and I hope more people can take it to heart ❤️

Lou wasn't actually blind but had to come up with a way to stop Tyler from jumping off the bridge so he had Tyler tell him a bunch of stuff while he thought of some deep and impactful thing to say to him.

Blind people don’t perceive beauty in the usual sense because they feel the world around them with the other senses. Sighted people rely so much on their sight that they forgot the other aspects of life that are truly beautiful.

Didn't know what I was expecting clicking on this video. Maybe something fun about interviewing a blind person and asking them questions connected to what's written on the title. About a minute in, I realized it wasn't anything like that, and usually at that point, I start to lose interest. But it kept drawing me in, and I ended up watching everything. The narration, the video in itself and the way the story was told captured me and I found myself just staring at the screen. I don't think about complicated things or go too deep into stuff, but this managed to make me tear up. So I felt the urge to comment. And also because I wanted to help get this on other people's recommended too, so they can see this amazing video. Well done.

As a blind person who once was visually impaired, I could imagine everything that is being described in my head with much detail and beauty because I knew how things such as objects, colors and the general world around me looked prior to losing my vision

To someone who was suicidal, it made me feel good, even though im not anymore. There's just something about this story that brings joy and life.

When he describes feeling a weird sensation and losing a sense of himself when he tries to grasp the complexity of the reality of how the sense of vision works, I really related. Whenever I think about obvious and inescapable parts of reality, like how time and infinity works, or the size of the universe, or ESPECIALLY my own consciousness, if I think too hard about it I get a weird physical sensation, lose my sense of self, and really overwhelmed, and even scared. That’s why I avoid thinking too deeply about realities that I understand the concept of, but I can’t escape or fully grasp. That was a beautiful video btw.

Apart from the morale of the story, it's opened my mind to new pieces of knowledge. I just realized that seeing is like touching and hearing at the same time. Sounds are related to colors (waves things). And shapes are related to textures (forms and features). I've never thought of that before.

at first i was like, wow this is a very good intro, 7 minutes in, I start to realize this was the actual video. a blind person cannot describe to us what stuff looks like to him, because we would never understand him since we have the ability to see things.

This remembers me of one of those question I had as a small kid: "Is the red I see, the same red as you see"? I almost wanted to be able to be in someone elses' body for just a few minutes to know. I know it's called "red", I see it and so do you. But is there a difference? There must be. But how? What does it look like? And this isn't only for colours, it's for everything we see, do, etc. I'm still so curious. EDIT: Thanks for all the replys, I didn't notice they were on my comment but now I read them all.

As he was describing the details I was looking back in time when I used to roam freely and feel the grass under my bare feet, run under the blue sky not really worrying about anything, my childhood is gone but it all feels like yesterday. I miss all that.

I didn't exactly know what I was getting myself into when I clicked on this video. This video truly made a difference to how I see the world. The way Tyler explained the colors, and textures, and the overall look of things really opened a new door. I truly didn't know that Lou would end up teaching Tyler how to see. thank you RU-vid for showing me this out of nowhere. i just fcked my midterms earlier and is really frustrated. i’ve been suicidal for almost 3 years now, have hurted my self for sometime but never took it seriously, because i don’t want my mom to cry and also because of stuffs like this. it’s life saving.

I was totally expecting an interview with a blind person, but was pleasantly surprised to watch this instead. It's funny just how much ones view of the world and their place in it can change in such a small a span of time.

This is inspiring. I realized that everyone sees the world differently. I'd like to show others how I see the world, using a book or making a video game. Maybe I'll do something.

I tried out a "fun" experience to go blind for two days with just a blindfold, was the most annoying thing I've ever done to myself besides trying to melt my foot off with a crock pot xD Definitely made me appreciate sight wayyyyyy more!

We all need a Lou in our life

This seems similar to a technique my therapist gave me for grounding myself- Find 5 things to look at. Then touch 4 things, smell 3 things, hear 2 things, and taste 1 thing. After that, think about why I chose those things. We’re they just what was easiest? We’re they sentimental? Etc. It really helps with anxiety, as it forces me to be in that moment.

I really enjoyed what Lou was saying about introspection. I believe the right amount of looking inward can make looking outward even more beautiful and astonishing. As with all things, moderation and balance is important.

I usually don’t comment on videos, but this one I felt the need to.This story sent me the strongest message I have received in memory. I don`t cry often, but this captured me and I was tears of emotion. In fact, it might be the most I`ve cried tears of emotion - ever. The extreme gratitude I felt of something most of us take for granted, the ability to see. In the middle of this video I just closed my eyes and listened, the perspective the blindman in this story gave to me is something I`ll never forget. Thank you for making this video, I will definitely share it at some point. Unbelievable quality in this video!

I don't think it's his new found recognition of the beauty around him that changed his perspective. Becoming the eyes for the blind man gave him a sense of purpose that was missing before. People long for purpose in life to feel fulfilled.

I temporarily went blind in one of my eyes because of a severe migraine. It's really hard to explain to people what it's like to literally lose sight, even just in a single eye. It's not black It's literally nothing. It felt like a giant hole in reality itself

The most interesting thing about disparities between agents of experience is the idea that even beyond the 5 or more primary avenues we use to perceive the world, with there being at least 5, there must be more that we can't even comprehend of in the same a blind man can't comprehend vision

3 years ago I lost my right eye. This hits me, but since I lost it, I have come to appreciate everything that I can see with my left eye. I don’t want to miss anything. I’m grateful, thankful to still be able to navigate this stunning world with deep reverence.

A reflection. 'Perceiving inwards' is what Carl Jung would describe as 'Introvered Intuition'. Deep, reflective personalities are adept at this, but it comes at a cost... a lack of desire to explore the sensory, (perhaps, trivial) outside world (what Carl Jung describes as 'Extroverted Sensing') 'Extroverted Sensing' is the exact opposite of 'Introverted Intuition'... and as hard as it might be, growing 'Extroverted Sensing' is actually the best way to grow/mature an 'Introverted Intuition' type personality. This video is really a message for intuitive individuals to grow by exploring the sensory world... and I expect most subscribers to this channel are intuitive types, (as this is deep/intuitive content)

I love this. The fact that the younger guy has his own struggles and when he is probably right at the point where he wanna give up, he meets this man and knowing that he lived his life more than him without seeing anything at all must have changed the younger guy's entire perspective in life.
