A bowl for LIFE not just for Christmas - The festive woodturning experiment

We have all made the mistake making or buying something for Christmas or any festive season that can look a little daft if left around for the rest of the year. I have set myself the challenge to make a festive bowl that will still look good enough to be left out all year round. How did I get on, well just watch to find out.

I honestly thought, "Well, this will be the first art piece of his that I don't like." But you toned down the red and purple...great move! And once again you trusted your instincts to create a beautiful feature accessory for any occasion. Well done! Merry Christmas to you and your family. 😊

Hello Mike. This one was really interesting and turned out beautifully. The little “error” when originally mounting the blank - to my mind - proved to be a real asset to the finished bowl. With the edge leaning inwards the patterning and colour is so much more visible, which shows off the hard work you put in to that element of your design. A very happy accident. I like the colours you used. However, the shape of the bowl suggests a bit more razzle dazzle for a future repeat performance. But I am just a humble observer and you have quite enough artistic flair to know exactly what you want to achieve.

Mike, at the beginning it could have made a prop for your local amateur dramatics society.. but I can't think of many plays that call for a wheel of parmesan cheese... What a splendid bowl by the end. It looks like it is one of those pieces that asks the question "how on earth did they make that?" .. we know of course because we saw the video. Painstaking artistry. Truly unique and exactly as you described, festive without being over the top. It is good that your error caused the sides to have to slant inwards as it showcases the pattern much better. I doubt we will see you between now and the big day so happy Christmas and very successful 2024 to you and yours. Thank you for everything you do and have shared with us this year.

Hi Mike, another challenge, another one for "I must try that" (well done on sticking to the task with the dimples!) We all 'create design opportunities' by mounting blanks the wrong way at times, thankfully in this case it was not a major blooper and I liked the shape it took you to. I will not mention 'the verbal blooper', it is late at night and I will just go straight to waving you goodnight. Cheers.

"...straight wavy line..." 😆Though I definitely understand what you meant. Maybe smooth wavy line? I'm glad you ended up choosing the gold/bronze rather than the green, I think that would have been too Christmasy for a year-round display piece. I like how the smaller texture turned out, and you should for sure put your initials in a piece, at the least. And I was amused that I am pretty sure I recognize the gilding polishes as I have several for my paper crafting 😊

What a delightfully interesting bowl Mike. I love the way you are prepared to experiment with ideas & the attitude of 'if I don't like the texture, the colour, the shape etc, I will turn it away & start again. Well done to you on that one. This IS a bowl for all occasions, there is nothing to 'pigeon hole it' for a one off occasion in the year. I don't mind the chosen piece of timber, it makes a quiet but pleasant statement as I see it. Very enjoyable video once again Mike & I think there is perhaps more artist in the man than he perhaps gives himself credit for. Thank for sharing & cheers, Don from South Australia.

Great effects, Mike. I do agree you could've been a bit bolder with your choice of colours, but as you say... you will be doing more of this method so next time....!! (I think the problem may have been covering everything with the dark pigment - the colours beneath lost their lustre). I like the whole ethos of this channel - always challenging yourself with things you haven't done before and working out how to get the best out of it! Please keep this going - not only for your own sake, but for us as well... It's fascinating trying to guess what you'll come up with next!! Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

I also got a smile from the "straight wavy line" comment. As you said the dimpling took a lot of time. The bowl looks terrific. Well done. I was happy to see you select a wood blank which is much easier for you to turn than some of the recent really hard woods. Colour choice is so personal. I think the soft shades of the guilders paste go well with the tulip. A nice bowl for the house, or a very unstable frisbee. If you want some inspiration for other carved or drawn embellishments, look up Zentangle. Happy holidays. You may be colder than my area at present, which is unusual. No likelyhood of white Xmas in eastern PA. That is fine for me. I am not looking forward to having to clear snow off the driveway. Dave.
@MikeHolton
@MikeHolton 6 месяцев назад
Thanks Dave, some of those Zentangles are a little intimidating 😀. The tulip was a good choice but I hate turning it, the tear out is horrible to deal with, not a great wood to get a decent finish on. It has been a little warmer here over the last few days but heavy winds. Not they have stopped and it's getting colder again lol. Happy holidays, Mike

Merry Christmas to you and yours. A very pretty and unique bowl. I really like the shape with the colours, and love the way you blended them. Perfect choices. Great bowl.

Oh wow. The texture created with the burr and the layers of colors looks amazing! I wonder if you could achieve a tarnished or patina hammered bronze or copper look with a similar process? Anyway. Love how this came out! Can't wait to see what else you do with these metallic pastes.

Thanks, you are the second person to mention a hammered copper look and I think I may be giving it a go 😀

Very Cool Mike ! I think I would’ve still like to seen the green used, but I do like the way this turned out.

Beautiful results with the colours Mike, The design with the little dimples makes me just want to touch it. The design looks so tactile, If it was in my home we would be taking turns enjoying the feel of the texture. 3 out of 4 of us are autistic and we would be using this gorgeous bowl for anxiety therapy. Once again you have created another stunning and very stylish piece of art. I absolutely love it! ❤😊 Merry Christmas to you and your family Mike, from Me and mine. Wishing you a very happy and blessed new year. Xxxx

Thanks so much Shelley, I really do appreciate the therapy in touch, being a very tactile person how something feels is as important to me as how it looks. Have a wonderful Christmas, Mike 😊
