I can't believe this is really ending. This is one of the best channels on RU-vid. It made me think a kot about things i wouldn't normally even pay attention. Now i have a wide view of the world and the people in it. thank you. thank you.
There is no other channel like this. I'm sad to see it go . Also, please do the "Should we have prisons" and the Twin peaks revival. And your missing the channel list.
Pixo da I know these well, and I would add Seeker Daily, although its dead now. Yeah, these channels do cool videos on diverse topics, but nothing does what Idea Channel does, that is, combining seemingly unrelated things, through which we can reflect on pop culture and society. Also, Mike is very, very knowledgeable, he knows a lot. He's not just a pub philosopher, because he has deep insights, has sources, does a lot of research. Also, I don't know any other channel which does comment responses, and I think that's also a big appeal to this channel, as it brings the audience to a more personal level
My subscription will remain until this channel reactivates. And even if it never does, i'll hold out a light for eternity in respect for all you have done for us.
Nice try Mike, we all know it's because there are no more ideas. Literally every idea has been thought of and you don't want us to know that. You can't hide it from us.
I've been following this channel almost from the beginning - and I don't want to be a hipster, but I really do remember when this was small. I'm glad what this channel has grown into. There isn't any other channel whose updates I follow with such enthusiasm, and I'm not even exaggerating. I'm sad that Idea Channel is ending, but at the same time, when I look back at how you, both this channel and you Mike, has evolved throughout the years, and how much you taught to me, I feel awe in the purest sense. I give all my respect to you, and I will support whatever you choose to do from now on!
hearing the ideas you wont be making episodes about made me sadder about the channel ending, i really want to see that different kinds of intelligent episode
In a very un-sourced, short as I can answer. IQ is but one way to ascribe intelligence. There are all kinds of/ways to be intelligence. You could be muscial intelligent, or mechanically. Emotionally, Abstractly, Mathmatically, Pattern wise..etc etc. In general people would say "You gotta be more intelligent to be a rocket scientist then a car mechanic or a song writer/singer" When really, its just different kinds of intelligence. Everyone is more intelligent then the average person..in some manner. We just ascribe specific kinds of intellect to being "smart" ,typically those which are tested and used to learn when we are growing up. I.e. Memorization and Pattern recognition is way more important then emotional or musical intelligence. Heck, even people who are praised for being physically gifted at something, just another kind of intelligence, tend to be considered jocks, not nerds. Strong, not smart, etc. And um, be proud of who you are, and revel in you own strengths tends to be the positive message to take away from that line of thought.
here's gardner's nine kinds of intelligence: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_multiple_intelligences you can also take a test to see which ones you have but they're internet quizzes and not really accurate
Guys it's super simple. A hot dog is a tacoform, which is to say an open-faced wrap, which (wraps) are a subset of sandwiforms, cousins of but not the same thing as sandwiches.
Long time listener, first time caller. Thank you. Just, thank you so much for all the inspiration, all the conversation starters, and all the wild polymathic thought. Best of luck in your future endeavors, and I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you, Mike. Be good.

I clicked on my first Idea Channel video a few years back, not expecting very much.. yet it completely changed my expectations of what can the internet can actually do! Good luck in the future to everyone who has worked on these, and thank you!
This channel made a huge impact in my life. I'm happy to say that the first thing that came to my mind while explaining to my friends at college why your work meant so much to me was: "I want to be like that guy when I grow up". It has been wonderful growing up next to Idea Channel, hope to see you again soon!
Thank you (and the team) for all of your work. You've all made my life, and so many other peoples lives, better. You've provided hours of entertainment, but not only that you've given us so many new perspectives to consider. We all come away from Idea Channel as better people.
I'm really sad that Idea Channel is ending. I actually feel a very important part of what I love about RU-vid is leaving. I completely understand why you want to end the show, I knew it would end because it's very hard to keep this up for ever, but it did feel soon for me. This is one of my favorite RU-vid channels, I've learned a ton about a lot of things and you guys have expanded my view of the world so much and for that I can't thank you enough. Mike, you are one of my favorite people on the internet, I'm with you on whatever you'll be making in the future, and whatever it is I know it'll be great. Can't wait to see what you'll come up with. Thank you a million times
I love you Mike R. Thanks for taking us on an adventure of learning. Your ability to bring high concepts to the masses is sterling. You are amazing and thanks for 5 years of wonderful.
In regards to what's next for you - Have you considered becoming a hero just for fun? Because I learned on Idea Channel that that's what you do when you start to feel ennui with your life and job.
I think the gift that I am most thankful for receiving from being an Idea Channel viewer is the the ability to think widely about everything. Idea Channel has shown how to think deeply outside of the box. I'm really excited that the Reasonably Sound podcast will continue. It really has changed my way of listening to the world around me. I hear things in a new way. Thank you so much!
Regarding channel suggestions; may I suggest Overly Sarcastic Productions? Clever breakdowns of Classical literature and history with tonnes of charm and humour.
Thanks! For everything. Seriously, EVERYTHING. Like, you have inspired me to such a degree that I think it is fair to say that you have changed my life. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the years of amazing content. It's been a pleasure, your videos have been inspiration for many of my studies and interests. I hope your future ventures go just as well ❤️
Ever had a pastrami sandwich, or anything on a cut piece of bread? Those are like hotdogs, except you eat them in a different orientation, but are clearly sandwiches.
Recommendations: RU-vid- School of life Wisecrack Mark Brown(video games but you covered a good bit of those for diff reasons) Podcast: 99% invisible(The Philosophy of Design)
I kinda just wanna share my top moments/memories of this show, and you guys feel free to add your own lists. 1. Bronies (my first episode; helped me feel less insecure about liking MLP) 2. Homestuck/Ulysses (turned me onto both) 3. Fallacies (I still reply to friends' comments with your snippets) 4. That playlist of music videos that incorporate GIFs (really amazing concept) 5. The visit to the teacher's classroom (that was so sweet) And also, I now, and will always, pronounce GIF...'jaif'. I'm gonna miss this channel so much, but of course I wish you the best of luck in all your potential future endeavors.
i have to say, that during my time of deep depression i would watch idea channel to help drown out the bad thoughts. while catching up on old episodes i came across two that forever changed my life. the steven universe and over the garden wall episodes, it introduced me to two of my favorite animated series of all time and got me out of my depression. it literally just hit me now, that without this channel and by the grace of god i could possibly be in a bad situation still. but i'm not, i'm so grateful for this gem on youtube. thank you, i'll miss this ❤️
I discovered your channel from your episode about Too Many Cooks of all things. What sold me on Idea Channel though was the Korrasami episode. It is so rare on RU-vid, in fact the whole internet, to find someone who's not judgmental about shippers. But I have watched just about all the videos, even some stuff about media I'm not interested in. I just love your ideas, analysis, and the over-the-shoulder visuals. In the past two years you made a risky move by going into more serious territory about real world issues, and I'm glad you did that. It was kind of jarring at first, but things needed to be said. (And I'm glad it's not the negative reactions some people had to those episodes that led you to want to end Idea Channel.) I look forward to your future projects. I have been watching you on Crash Course Mythology and am enjoying it immensely. Good luck. :')
perhaps a hot dog is not a sand witch, and if that is the case i argue that it is part of some super-class of food that includes both hot dogs and sandwiches but also things like tacos, gyros, and hotpockets.
vitamindubya FWIW I'd bet that the hotdog people don't want it to be a sandwich because of regulations or taxes, not actual deontological beliefs about the nature of sandwiches.
I have never commented before, but I just wanted to say that this show has been a bastion for me in the internet and in my life in general, and I will miss it terribly. Thank you for answering our questions and for being incredible.
I love Idea Channel, life has been hectic: I moved half way across the country, bought a house, had a baby, and I am sad that I started watching again as you are ending. But I lookforward to getting back into the complete series playlist. I must say, if there were ever a complete series DVD/Bluray/thing, I would love that
Your "best advice I've gotten" story was particularly moving, I had to rewind to listen to it again as soon as you finished just to really absorb it. Thank you for that bit of wisdom
I like how you give us an answer without answering the question. Here's an idea: You've been doing this for a long time You want to move in a different direction You want to try something new You believe it's time to take a break, then move on.
13:51 This is actually the best answer. I'm dying that no one even considered it a possibility bc same. Literally never even for a second thought "You could just hand the show over."
As bummed as I am that Idea Channel is going away, I gotta give you kudos for doing it well. It's really nice that you gave us lots of time to get ready for it and spend lots of time addressing our questions. When I think of how most shows go away with short or no notice, this is very refreshing. For example, when the Nightly Show was cancelled suddenly last year, I was pretty disappointed and mad and had a lot of questions. If you're going to go, this is such a better way to do it.
I just want to add my thanks for the fantastic "content" (!) you have provided over the past 5 years. We have been watching IDEA channel as a family, my daughter is now 15. Your thoughtful ideas have been humorous and provacative and enriching to our lives. My daughter was thrilled when I told her you were a musician & composer and had a website. I am sure we have not heard the last of you. In whatever art/philosophy form you choose to focus on, I wish you all the best.
I really appreciate your honesty and willingness to give us information about the show ending and answering our quesitions. I really will miss Idea Channel, but it has been such a good run and so amazing and thank you again for your donations of thoughts into the world.
Could you please cover universal income before you leave? It may become one of the most important issues we deal with moving forward and the discussion seems very polarized. I can't think of anyone I'd love to see cover both sides more.
I wanted to write a novel, but I guess I'll simply say I'm very grateful that this channel ever existed, I'll be sure to follow your next adventures and if I ever get the occasion, buy you a nice drink.
I have never really participated in the conversation with my fellow Idea Channel viewers before, but I just wanted to add my love and support for this channel and for everything you've done here, Mike! Definitely the Internet show I'm always most excited to watch and I will certainly miss it. I look forward to whatever is next! Thank you-sincerely-for your time and your perspective and your creativity. 🖖🏻
I don't want to be reductive, but man, your very long answer to the question of why this is ending basically amounts to, "I'm tired of this and I want to do something else now." Which, by the way, is perfectly fine.
was needlessly challenging to read this between the lines. maybe he thinks there are some 8 year olds whose minds are melting because the channel is ending.
I think "tired of this" is too narrow an interpretation. Creative people do not set out to do the same thing over and over again until death. Musicians change styles and formats and bands and collaborators. Painters decide to try sculpture, or video art. Actors walk away from onstage roles even though the play is still selling out the house every night. There are no awards for consistency in art; no gold watch for playing the same hits every night for 40 years. This is an ongoing challenge for online video; the people who make it are creative people, and the RU-vid audience largely demands (through its collective behavior) creators make new stuff on a consistent schedule. So we get to expect it, and then treat it as a bug or a tragedy when it doesn't happen. Instead, I think, we should treat any channel as a long performance piece, with a beginning, a life span, and an end. Endings don't have to come because the people are "tired of it"; some things are trilogies, and should stop at three books. (That said, Mike, if you do happen to make more Reasonably Sound episodes, I'll be thrilled :)
I think what he really meant was his certain approach/perspective to most of the ideas is getting stale, and this is somewhat evident in some of the videos.
Hmm, I interpreted it more as "my goals can be met more satisfactorily in new ways." Which does not mean one is tired of the old way, only that new ways of doing things might work better.
Though I won't say "single-handedly", Idea Channel is definitely the first RU-vid channel that got me into, well, RU-vid. I linked here from a random article on ScreenRant so many years ago and never left. It taught me, aside from all the stuff it taught, how to watch and engage with RU-vid and the potential power of channels. Because of Idea Channel, I also found Extra Credits, Philosophy Girl, Movies with Mikey, Lessons from the Screenplay, Game/Film Theorists, the McElroys, Every Frame A Painting, and so many more. Each linking me deeper and deeper into RU-vid content (G'yar?). But Idea Channel was the first, and for that alone, I will forever be grateful. (As well as all the non-RU-vid stuff, like Ms Marvel, Welcome to Nightvale, Steven Universe, Rick & Morty, and so forth; not to mention all the other suggestions I am still getting to. Homestuck, I'm looking at you...) Does anyone know a word that describes one as having a feeling of immense sadness while simultaneously feeling pure joy for a choice made by another? I think I feel that. And a half dozen other things. I'm going to miss you Idea Channel, and all your ideas. Thanks for five great years :-}
What's the channel you recommend about Renaissance art at 22:55? It sounds like you're saying Amor Say Andy, but I can't find anything like that anywhere.
I just want to say thank you Idea Channel. I started watching this channel at a point in my life when things didn't make much sense, but this show always gave me new lenses to look at the world with. Mike thanks for always enthusiastically teaching me something, and most importantly for teaching me it's ok to not understand everything as long as you're always trying to learn.
Wow, this answer was MUCH clearer than the one from the "Idea Channel is Ending" video. Artistic growth is something most people will probabbly understand. Especially the Idea Channel community.
Alex Andrews here's what I could figure- 1. Philosophy Tube by Ollie 2. Folding ideas by Dan Olson 3. Lindsay Ellis 4. Art assignment by Sarah Greene 5. Extra Credits 6. Errant Signal (thank you moon safari films) 7. Amor Sciendi 8. Nerdwriter1 9. Vox these are only those which he mentions in the video as a 'quick shout out to', so there are more and we still need a list in the description
Dude, that advice from your professor is like a gut punch. I feel like I can relate to this because I have had a bit of a rough time, probably not the roughest of times, but some rough times with schooling. Late 2009, I'm in 10th Grade, and my small school announces that it could be closing if money cannot be raised, spring 2010, it closes and my dad is out of a job. He gets one at a new public high school and I have to start at a public school for the first time ever the next year, I'm still pretty smart, but I never felt like I belonged until the end of the school year. My dad gets a new teaching job but tuition is too high so then I have to move to another high school because that's the one I'm zoned for and I have to do it all over again. I graduate in 2012 with none of my friends, I haven't even applied for college. That summer, two weeks before classes start, I apply to a community college and get started and it's the best two years, but then I have to go to university. The university rejected my art portfolio twice, I didn't even try for a third time, I just took the intensive class the summer of 2015. I get to doing really well, I feel like I am at the top of my game, then I swear to you, the requirements changed or something because then I was not going to be able to graduate even a semester late, but a whole year, and I blame that portfolio holdup, and because of that this last year, I didn't feel like things were going all too great. I graduated this past Spring, I had fun in my classes, but now that it's over, I'm at the bottom again. All I have ever known is school and now it's over. To make things worse, I still don't even have a physical diploma! The system feels rigged when it comes to that. It's also partly my fault, I should be trying to apply to jobs.
Thank you so much for sharing that last piece of advice. I graduated just last year in a degree in Art and while I'm fortunate enough to currently have a job that relates to it, it's only part time and I'm definitely not making much. I know that not everyone gets their big break immediately, but it's super reassuring to hear it ring true for someone else that it didn't happen immediately, it's normal, and the struggle doesn't always last forever.
I never participated in Idea Channel conversations or left any comments before. I don't know, english is not my first language and it was hard to express my ideas in written form. But every week, every time I thought "ok, that's it, this week I'm putting on a comment", and I never did it. So seeing the title of the last video was really like a punch to the gutt. Obviously because I felt I had not lived the idea channel experience to the fullest and also because... Yeah, just sad. So now I just want to say how important you've been to me. I discoverd the show 3 years ago and talked non-stop about it to my friends. Most of them cannot understand it since it's in english and really fast paced with a little to much Baudrillard. In those 3 years I found my path as a translator, in part because I want to subtitle all of Idea Channel in french (hudge job but who knows, maybe I'll be done in 10 years...). I am also working with friends to make a youtube chanel about costumes in movies and series. Needless to say it's really Idea Channel inspired. This show also helped me rationalising, accepting and living through depression and OCD. Eventhough I never left a comment, I still always felt like a part of the community, and boy did I talked about it with my friends, debating it through in my own way. So, hmm, quite longer than I expected but you deserve all the praise and all the love, and although I was silent the all time, I think I still apply the Idea Channel method to my day to day life. You and all of your team are the best and you will be missed (just seriously when I watched the last video I was so sad I woke up my boyfriend to tell him because I needed a hug). I can't wait to see what you do next, and thank you for everything! Ps : + does it mean more reasonably sound episodes? Because it's really great too!
I know many of us will miss our semi-regular Mike Rugnetta fix (and yes I know about Reasonably Sound and Crash Course). Thank you Mike, the PBS Idea Channel Crew, the Patreons and everyone else (myself included as a content absorber) for helping to make this show what it is.
You should be able to love a robot, in general only so long as we're talking the love you'd feel towards a pet or child, otherwise so long as the robots are truly capable of feeling love in return.
i happened to stumble across this channel during my homestuck phase and i haven't left since because this is one my favorite channels! it's been so insightful and interesting. whether i agreed or not, i loved looking at something from a new or different perspective. im saddened but i shall support whatever venture you choose next, mike ♡
Vigor 3GreenGreenGreen (6) Creature - Elemental Incarnation (6/6) Trample If damage would be dealt to a creature you control other than Vigor, prevent that damage. Put a +1/+1 counter on that creature for each 1 damage prevented this way. When Vigor is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library.
as some one who never commented on any of the ideas channels videos. I wish you all the best in the future . i watched your videos like I watched Internet iristocrate (which is spelt wrong) and now he is mister metekour. thank you and all the crew for so many great videos and conversations I loved watching
Thanks so much for answering the question on why the hosting isn't being handed off. At first, the concept of it never coming up totally crushed me, but your thoughts on why it wouldn't make sense were extremely satisfying.
You should totally archive this entire channel under the Internet Archive. It would be incredible to take such great, recent content and openly host it there.
I can't help but reject the idea that a new host couldn't keep Idea Channel Idea Channel. There are certain principles that Idea Channel rests upon. Just a few: * All people, regardless of their eccentricities are important * Culture is deserving of critique, no matter how niche * Thought is valuable in and of itself, even if it does not result in discernable action * Nerdery is the coolest There are many others, but they are not so many and they are not so difficult that someone who believes them cannot take up the torch. Of course it would be a bit different and I think for most IC fans, that is preferable than losing this special place. I hope that PBSDS considers finding someone to be the next host and gives them time to find their groove. This is a valuable property for PBSDS, and it's valuable for us.
I will miss idea channel so much. You always approach topics from an unconventional perspective that I greatly value. That being said, I can't wait to see your new project and you have all of my love and support!
Mike! I love to share Idea Channel because I know it is quality stuff. Definitely going to miss you popping up in my feed every week or so. Keep up the pursuit of knowledge, truth, and all things IDEA. Please make a TUMBLR or Twitter dedicated to the fine GIF curation of you and the crew so we can have our fix. Much love Mike.
I felt like there was a lot of encouragement to make something new that's like Idea Channel. Which is a very good thing to remember with Idea Channel ending.
I really can't conjure the words to express how sad I am that I never commented on these videos, I never thought I was ready, I hadn't read enough and I would be ignored. But I learned so much and grew up so much watching Mike and the great work of the team. Good god I'll miss you so much...
Your face when you said vigor was priceless! :) I've never commented before, but I've loved every one! I'll miss you and I can't wait to see what you do next! Please do a Gilmore girls episode!
Thanks for all your work Mike. I hope that I can develop even a fraction of the open-mindedness, thoughtfulness, and curiosity that you embody and promote on Idea Channel. Unlike many channels on RU-vid, rather than explore old philosophical ideas or try to paste them onto the present, I feel like you have instead created and cultivated a new philosophy. You have shown that Philosophy is not the stuffy, useless subject that many people think it is, but that it is truly the love of thinking. Thank you. I look forward to your future endeavors.
Mike, team: you are stunningly appealing, inspiring, and awesome. I'm so happy that you're moving on from this project for creative reasons (rather than any other). Been watching and listening for five years and it's been such a pleasure to hear your view on so many topics close to my heart. I'm so excited to see what you get up to next.
