I have to say, having done a lot of English dialect work in theater myself, it's obvious Dick worked hard on this. And there's more to cockney than getting the sound right - there's a unique rhythm to it and a way of connecting words to each other. Even if he can't nail the sound, the words and the cadences mostly fall where they're supposed to. In fact, I think he does a slightly better job than people give him credit for.

It's amazing that the comments are focused on the accent instead of that incredible framing device. When he stops, his goofy tone changes, and he says "Wind's in the East..." that's such a fantastic introduction to show that some meaningful power is coming back into the world. And remember he has the last line, where he says "Don't stay away too long!" Like this is a cycle that will keep repeating. Also, remember that Bert, like Mary, is probably not quite what he appears to be. He's in just the right place a little too often, and a little too comfortable with magic, for him to be just some random Londoner jack-of-all-trades. Who knows, maybe that's why he never got the accent quite right?
@lettersivewritten
@lettersivewritten 3 года назад
Perhaps whatever makes him feel unease at first glance is actually reassuring since whatever it was, meant exactly as you had said about meaningful power coming back into the world. I disagree with your comment about his comment being about things happening over and over (which this is all speculation anyway, so it doesn't matter what I think) and more about how he's playing a character, and is in a setting that wasn't so much truly turn of the century City of London as it was 14th-18th century City of London to show a modern audience and a most modern setting that which is most important, and always has been, by... Foreshadowing far more than what was realized : that meaningful power's return to the World, you mentioned (it isn't just Mary, he means obviously).

You know...when I watched the movie, I never registered it as a bad English accent, rather, that the character had something wrong with him, so he had a weird way of talking that was unique to him, which would make sense for his character. That made sense to me with his social class, and his physical mannerisms as well. Lots of people have mannerisms and pronunciations unique to them, especially if they've had neurological issues in childhood.Those issues may heal up, and only make them a tad bit strange but otherwise completely normal on the human gradient.

She wasn't his nanny. They're best friends. However, it has been hinted there's some romance between them.

P.L. Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, actually didn't want any romance between them.

I never realized he was doing a British Accent, I thought that was how Chimney sweepers talked, as a child. Yes, I watched British Stars on Which American Accent Is Hardest to Do | Vanity Fair? This made my night...lol.

All the people complaining about his accent don't realize that this was just just intended to be sufficient to pass muster with American audiences in the 1960s. It just has to be enough to work with suspension of disbelief. The special effects aren't very convincing to modern audiences either, but no one is complaining about that. The average American in the 1960s didn't know what a British person was supposed to sound like, and as far as they were concerned this was perfectly accurate. He's a "lower class British guy", that's all he needed to get across, and it works fine for that purpose.

Poor Dick Van Dyke, he played in an iconic movie and the only he gets remembered for is how he got the accent wrong!

The key to Dick Van Dyke's success, is that he doesn't give a fuck what people think about him. Even better, he doesn't conform. If you're still this happy at age ninety, you've got to have done something right ;)
