While in Kashgar I met with a graduate of the vocational training centres. In this video, I discuss what I learnt, and struggle with a the more broad question about what these "camps" were really for and where the real concerns are.
I am from Singapore... Some years ago, through the social media, I did ever interacted with a young Uyghur from Xinjiang, who was having his further studies aboard in America. This young Uyghur told me that he had dreams of going back to Xinjiang to rebuild his homeland after his studies in America. Because he was devastated by the terrorist act committed by his same people in Xinjiang, which ended up portraying a bad image of them the Uyghur in the whole entire China. There was a very interesting factor that he told me was; during his stay in America, there were American from certain "organisation" approached them the Uyghur to get involve in certain protest against China. All they need to do is to shout slogan and wave flags... By doing all these, they will be promised to be issued with the "green card" by the government. So in conclusion, many events happening in the western world that are targeting China are in fact staged by the west themselves.

Im really touched by your constructive criticism about the situation and your care of our people. I completely agree with what you said about xinjiang, what might have happened. I hear complaints too from people around me on this mass approach by the govt. But they also appreciate the govt for taking down the terrioists and are grateful for the safe and happy life they get to enjoy now and in the future, which the west will never believe.
I wish a lot of Hong Kong youths would think like you. No one will for look out for them like the Chinese government will. Not the USA, not Australia, not the UK. These countries don't really care about your human rights.
Imperialists don't care about the well being of their own countrymen let alone someone who doesn't look and talk like them. They want a horde of mindless, drone slaves to give their life slaving away to make profits that they can scoop up and hide in offshore accounts and stocks. Material results always triumphs over symbolic victories, as they say you can talk the talk but can you walk the walk. China has improved the material conditions of millions of it's people. This is a fact that no one can deny whether you like or dislike China.
This person in the west does believe what Daniel is talking about. I do my best to spread his message and invite others to really question all the western imperial lies. May the colonial imperialist system crumble into oblivion, and may we come together to create something just, where all people have the freedom and opportunity to become and belong.
I wanted to explain to my classmates what china is doing with the re education camps, but in the end I was overwhelmed in people saying that I am a genocide supporter. I cried in my room, and gave up trying to have a meaningful conversation with them, they're mind so imbedded into the narrative that the west has created. I hope one day, I could be like Daniel and speak my own voice without backing down.

Don't be too hard on yourself. Many simply WANT to believe the worst about China. That allows them to feel better about their society's own failings, to alleviate their own guilt. You can never turn these people's mind (which are mojority), regardless of your debating skills. Keep your head up. What doesn't kill China makes her stronger. Same for you, survive such toxicity, and become stronger.
It is commonly seen. Whenever people say something not bad about China, they will be labeled as ‘brainwashed’. It is scientifically impossible to prove that something does not exist. You can imagine the topic for yourself, you can only prove that one thing exists, but you can't prove that one thing doesn't exist. (Because no matter how you prove it, it can only prove that it was not discovered but not that he does not exist.) This is what makes the western media so disgusting and insidious, because they can make your head hurt just by telling lies, because you can't prove that what they say doesn't exist.
Confucius societies believe everybody malleable. Education is the key to change people unfit for society. Fighting terrorism means changing people's heart, which is viewed by west as useless or limiting freedom of thought. Western societies believe people are born the way they are. Prison or execution is the solution for those unfit for society. Fighting terrorists means killing them off, which is viewed by east as barbarism. The root is the difference of cultural value. Both view themselves as better one for humanity problems. Both actually are correct, depending on the subjects. Higher the mental ability, better malleability.
We can see from Daniel's experience: China authority welcomes constructive suggestions and criticisms. China welcomes people who aim to help to solve the problem based on the fact.

The point on how things will develop in Xinjiang regarding the possible return of extremism is one that needs preventing rather than reacting. Things seem to be easing up for "first offenders" who - as you put it - where given a choice (go here or be incarcerated) - graduated from these training centers and have reinserted into society. I reckon repeat offenders will be treated with fewer and more severe options. I also think those disgruntled caught in the wide net will eventually see the difference the measures made. Resentment dies out although it may not become love. And that's ok.

Daniel, thank you so much for your honest analysis. Yes, China needed to do something about the terrorism in Xinjiang and they also made many mistakes and missed opportunities. Invariably there is many lessons to learn and improve from the deployment of this program for China even if it was necessary for the situation. Right now I don't really care what people in the West think about China. Being ABC (Australian) I've already given up on arguing with people who thinks the worse of China including and especially my own relatives. I just care that China will continually improve and create better policies for the benefit of the people, and the only way to do this is to listen to genuine analysis and criticisms. I am really glad to hear that they have invited you back to Xinjiang to talk about your criticisms and ideas. I hope it will bring benefit to Xinjiang and policies laid out by the government in the future.
Wow, just wow. Daniel you surprise me every time with amazing quality contents. Thank you Daniel for how honest you are about this conversation. I really think you should reach out to @Destiny to have a conversation about the demonization of China and the lack of proper conversations about holding governments on each side accountable to work for the good of everybody.
As much as I disagree with destiny on so so so so many things I do believe he is acting in good faith almost all the time. Even when I disagree with him I can also understand his thought process and he has interesting justifications for his beliefs
OK i love black people destiny, I don't think he'll be able to engage in this in good faith, he is a business man first and this topic is a risk to his livelihood.
You two are barking up the wrong tree. I'm not here to defend destiny so idk where this goofy virtue signaling is coming from. I do think it would be an interesting conversation if they spoke with each other. I'm here to cut through western propaganda same as you presumably.
Destiny does not always act in good faith. For instance, watch his recent 'debate' with Richard Wolff. I've been watching Destiny for over 8 years, and I watch his debates because it's entertaining -- they're not actually that informative. His style of argument is more about winning than providing a nuanced discussion over an issue. He uses a lot of rhetorical tricks/traps and he's generally very condescending to people who politically disagree with him.
Admire your insight, perception, and courage on this most difficult issue. I hope that the Chinese government actually reflects on your thoughts for their future actions.
As a Chinese who live in Canada for over 10 years, it is my pleasure to see and learn about the cultural differences; how two different political systems manage their countries, and how the different ideologies affect people. And it is such a pleasure to watch your video to see how you experience the differences in a very objective way and questioning the typical western stereotype and false reports. Thank you Daniel for your voice.
Daniel is right to worry what comes next in the near future in Xinjiang. With the amount of resources the US will spend to create civil war and the delisting of ETIM, I am afraid we are just witnessing the calm before the storm. It will be truly incredible if the calm persist and I hope I am wrong. If choosing the lesser evil is what it takes then so be it.
Thank you Daniel. Really appreciate the honesty and the fair constructive criticisms. You are very correct about why there was a lot of hesitancy for those of us who doesn't hate China to say negative things about her. It's not because we don't think there are negatives, but we know that every time we say something remotely negative, people in the West will hear only that. And then they'll think it's 100x worse than what have been described and judged harshly for it even if it's something that the Western country does exactly the same way. And if we show support or even understanding to certain Chinese policies, we'd be called a communist or brainwashed in 2 seconds flat. It's so frustrating, and as a result many of us either end up shutting up about it or we simply say as many positive things as possible... Almost like revenge-style. I think if Chinese issues are judged fairly, with the same standards as how the West judge their own issues, we will be much less defensive and will be able to openly voice more constructive criticisms. Because we will know that it will not be used as a weapon against China. But right now, that is not the case.
I think many anti-China people only want to hear the negative news about China that's all, and ignore the positive news about China. It's like a picky child who'll only eat all the meat and ignore the veggies on her plate, so it becomes very difficult to provide a balanced view.
@@Shenzhou. True. I also think there are many who aren't necessarily anti-China, but they're so "brainwashed" by the media and their government that they cannot fathoam that anything positive can happen in China at all. :(
The US way of dealing with poverty: lure upper-middle class/already wealthy, home-based 'entrepreneurs' with cash and gifts while evicting working-class people who haven't been able to make rent.
Thank you very much Daniel. It is very informative and insightful. As a Chinese, I think the methodology of poverty allevation and de-terrorism in China has been deeply rooted in the Chinese culture. In the Analects of Confucius, one of the remarks I rememered is "夫子之道,忠恕而已“, which can be interpreted as " “The basic principle of the Way our Master advocates and holds is kind-heartedness, with focus on faithfulness and forgiveness.” Both of the two Chinese characters are very interesting. 忠 , which has "centre" as upper part, and "heart" as lower part, means to put your heart in the middle, so you can try your best when you do things (some people interpreted 忠 as loyalty, but i think here it means more loyalty to yourself); 恕,has “same“ as upper part, and "heart" as lower part, and it means to treat other like yourself. So try your best when you do things, and treat other people like yourself, that's the way Confucius taugh us 2600 years ago. I know there are still lots of issues, some of them are really severe, but I believe China will be getting better and better if we can keep doing things in our own way and growing peacefully. Thank you again!
Kudos to you, Daniel! This is the epitome of great journalism, reviewing the situation from multiple perspectives, and digging deeper to reveal the real reasons behind the Xinjiang disinformation propaganda.
I hope that the economy in Xinjiang can boom fast enough to benefit everyone there especially the poor and rural part, which will help a lot to eliminate the extreme Islamism which always use poverty as an excuse to brainwash local Uighurs.

Great video Daniel! Thank you so much! Our world needs the people (media and journalists) like you to keep a health report and media instead a media with lies which serves for political purpose and for money provider!
Thank you Daniel. I related so strongly to the dilemma faced by all pro-China voices you described. China is like a house under construction, barely enough to shelter its people from the rain and thunder that has been raging outside for a century. Then came someone hell-bent on tearing the building down, citing extremely exagerated quality concerns. I would be pathetically blind if I casually dismiss him by claiming there is no quality issue whatsoever, but, in the meantime, I am equally - if not even more - uncomfortable to tacitly side with him and dig my own grave. I sometimes got equally frustrated by the absurdity and dishonesty the MSM keep shoveling down their audience's throat, and by the ever-diminishing ground for constructive criticism due to the overwhelming need for counterbalancing the negtive rhetoric. It is always easy for haters to point a finger when they do not have skin in the game... Look forward to your future work!

The layers of your thinking and the honesty of your criticism is MUCH MUCH appreciated, as well as the amount of work you put into this. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for making an effort in interviewing that gentleman. It must be very emotional for both you and him talking about his experience. In Singapore, we have deradicalisation program too for those who are deemed as terrorists, potential terrorists or having extreme ideas which will cause harm to the society. Examples of extreme ideas are like : targeting churches or mosques to cause harm to devotees, joining the ISIS in Syria, canvassing and funding the operations of ISIS, etc. The idea of having them "removed" from the society for period of time is to stop their continued interaction with dangerous elements. While in this programme, they will be counselled by religious teachers. Family members are allowed to visit them on certain days. Steps are taken to ensure that they can return and integrate smoothly into the society. Personally, I appreciate our government's effort in trying its best to keep the society safe for everyone.
Good Day Mr. Dumbrill. I wanted to comment on how much I appreciate your willingness to test your stand by trying to find people whose stories presumably could contradict your assumptions. It takes a lot of courage to listen to somebody who might invalidate everything you've done and said up to this point, much less to seek them out. I'm not sure I'd be up to that myself. One other difference I wanted to mention about the McCarthyism comparison is that McCarthyism was a policy of flagrant opportunism. To my knowledge there was no attempt to "rehabilitate" those called out as communists. The goal was to crush these people completely, and to take them out of society permanently, usually by blacklisting them, and to benefit from their destruction either by shoring up the accuser's patriotic bona-fides or allowing them to avoid deeper consequences if they themselves had been accused. What's happening in Xinjiang appears to be the opposite, at least regarding the fate of those caught up in the dragnet. Except for those who have been convicted of the most serious of crimes, the goal seems to be to ultimately bring these people successfully back into the society from outside, and to provide them a future that they can be happy with. Again, thank you very much for the video. I feel like I can always trust you to be honest about what you see. I know you put a lot of time and effort into these posts and I very much appreciate it.
Agreed with you. I remembered a brother of my friend was put in jail for 10 years under theBritish in The then so called nation of Malaya, now Malaysia just because he was fighting along with those Malay citizens for independence as a student activist. Luckily for him, he had a girl friend who waited for him all those years and they did get married in the end but his youth was wasted spending in jail. No re education or chance of vocational training. Finally worked in various jobs to get himself a small grocery business. So much for western democracy and human rights.
This is indeed a both candid and forthcoming revelation, now I'll make it a point to visit your brewery bar in hope of learning more from you if you have the time. Two thumbs up!
You are a voice of reason, Daniel, in this world of seemingly increasing irrationality, hate, and anger. You cover all the sides that need to be covered (of course, this is not a one-dimensional issue), without over-emphasizing this or that aspect to push a certain agenda. It's such a shame that a majority of Americans are simply not curious enough to look into what is going on in the world outside of their country and political bubble. They assume they understand everything, 100% crystal clear, just from seeing some headlines on Twitter or Facebook. But as they say, if you see it enough, you start to believe it. It takes some strength to acknowledge one's misunderstandings and correct them. I only hope more of us start to do that.
