I can relate, got 2 misdemeanors at 19 years old. 10 years ago they never told you it would affect employment before taking a plea offer deal. And that it would never be able to be expunged or sealed. So what did I do? Went to college to get my life back on track again. I poured my everything into it: Top of my college class, 3.8gpa, phi theta kappa member, worked and payed my own way through college, and sacrificed everything to have a better life- all amounted to nothing but a broken heart and tormented soul for the rest of my years to come. The medical field was not easy either, but they do background checks to become licensed. Not to mention the impact it has by being rejected by girls who think you are a loser who never tried because I remained a construction worker. Too many people don't realise what it takes to change themselves and the position they were placed in growing up. Fun facts: The American Judicial System is the world's leading jailer. When comparing states as if they were separate countries, around 28 american states rank top in the list in comparison to the world! America has a serious need to change this injustice towards their own people. When is it time to stand up against a life sentence to poverty? We need to get together and fight this injustice. I am glad to hear that Pennsylvania is trying something.

Does anyone else think that a criminal record is unfair? Especially after you've been truly rehabilitated? What if Criminal records were assigned as part of the punishment for committing a crime? As in, Judge: "I hereby sentence you to 1 year in prison, five years on probation, and a 10 year criminal record" rather than a criminal record that just follows you for life?

Basically it would be like a credit report, where blemishes fall off between 7 and 10 years. I think that, at least for non-violent misdemeanors, this should be the default. However, there are two aspects of a criminal record. What the general public can see, and what the government can see. If you go for any government job, or most type of professional licenses, employers and licensing agencies will have access to state and federal databases, which will show everything. So basically any type of gainful employment (other than the trades or self-employment) will be blocked.

This is bullshit. It all depends on what you did and where you apply. If you apply as a law enforcement officer or a paramedic, you might have problems but if you apply for a good job in the trades, you probably will be fine.

I got into a fight with my older brother and got charged with Domestic violence. The case was dismissed "without prejudice" so he can still refile up to 6 years so to me it doesnt really seem dismissed. I'm trying to join ROTC in college and I still have to get a waiver and may get denied all together even though it was dismissed. Honestly I feel like the victim in this situation who is being judged by hypocrites who know nothing about the situation or my life. It's like it never goes away in this country.

I'm an army veteran with an honorable discharge and I'm almost done with a Justice studies degree the bachelor's degree so I'm almost 4 years completed in college but I also have a criminal record from this period of time right after I got out of the military when I didn't really have much direction and I was still 22 I spent 18 to 22 in the army and got out and I was 22. A lot of people would say while you were in the army you should have been more mature when you got out what they don't understand is that the military helps you function very well in the structured environment when you lose that structure it's like a fish out of water type of culture shock. As soon as I didn't have morning PT and morning formation to ensure that I was in the right place doing the right thing I was just another 22-year-old and a very small town with a lot of opiate addiction in the area and no opportunity I tried to become a police officer they wanted a four-year degree I was not ready for a college at the time so I took a couple construction labor jobs and then winter came and as always those types of jobs go away here in the winter ended up pretty desperate and I stole something and it turned out to be worth enough that the theft charge was considerable enough to land me in prison for 2 years and 3 years of probation after that. All of which I completed I haven't been in any trouble since but I'm nearing the end of college and I'm starting to realize that so many doors are shut for me. I would love to go into private security but I look at so many companies HR policies and they list off qualifications and almost without exception even for unarmed security positions and even for non-security related jobs there is always a background check and when I ask on quora if anyone hires people with records I get told to go back and work construction well I'm sorry I just spent 3 years in college using my GI Bill to try to better myself I don't want to be limited for the rest of my life. I have kids I have people who depend on me and it would be a real tragedy if I ended up completely limited for the rest of my life. I even have friends that tell me to give up on college I got into a preheated discussion with a friend last night and he told me dude you have a record and basically told me to take a job at a local convenience store stick with that and give up on anything else well I want more for my life and I want to be able to give more to my kids so it's very discouraging my ideal job would be private military contracting I did a great job in the army I miss it I know I wouldn't get in with a very good company but I'll be willing to start just about anywhere in that sector even stateside but I just kind of feel like the 8 years that's elapsed between the conviction and now the honorable military service before showing that I wasn't always that way and the steps I've taken to better myself since should outweigh that one stupid bad decision that I made 8 years ago. If I didn't have that on my record I would be able to work in counterterrorism all of these things that I want to do are pretty much out of my reach I want to travel I like to protect people places and things and I'm just so restricted now even though I finished all of my sentence and I also happen to be in the one state where there's no expungement except for a governor's pardon.

Basically any misdemeanor in today's age equates to the loss of gainful employment, unless you are in the trades or self employed. Any type of government job or professional license will be off limits to most applicants, regardless of how much they improved their lives after their convictions.

When I got in my first relationship I randomly got dumped & I was quit upset about being dumped so I sent my ex texts & he also had ago at me too but when he had ago at me it was done on the phone whilst mine was done through texts. A few months later his friend asked me out so I said yes because I had always liked him & my ex some how found out about it all & was really angry & he rang me up laughing saying his told on me to the police to get back at me for being with his friend. I got charged because of the texts that I sent him & i tried to tell the court he had also harassed me too but because I didn't have the evidence I got in trouble & he didn't. Btw after that happened he was posting up on facebook how he felt bad for going to the police & his really sorry. What he has done has ruined my life in some ways because I might not be able to work with children now & that's the only job I want to do. It's amazing how snitching on someone can effect a person's future.

I'm scared my life is going to be over should I get convicted. I'm just charged and been praying I can be proven innocent yet am so scared the system will just want me gone as my first offense. I've tried getting better work than what I'm doing now to keep my house and my car. Yet nobody wants to even give me a chance till either after I'm convicted then possibly put on probation. Or they don't want me till between 3 to 10 years after I've served my sentence. I've already lost my life savings not long after being released on bond due to a scammer making me think I had other charges against me. Thanks to,the damage already inflicted by being in jail I couldn't think straight to realise I was getting scammed. It was a huge kick me when I'm down moment. I'm grateful for my close family who still love me and for the part time job i have now giving me a chance. Yet I keep seeing all this stuff and it just makes me realise how completely screwed up the system is against people with records. I'm fighting with everything I have to not just give up and follow majority rules. Yet every day I try to get better work or go back to my old job. It all fails cause my background check shows charged yet not convicted and how I got arrested while still on the clock at work. My apologies for the long comment. I'll delete it if it's wrong. Just wanted to comment my story so far and my thoughts.
