He is, in my opinion, the best Blender teacher on RU-vid. But if you really want to respect him, go to game dev.tv and buy his course. I bet he likes getting paid.

Noob here but I actually know this Live Unwrap issue as I just happened to learn it in another tut! There are actually 2 different live unwraps! The one you turn on in the UV editor I think only relates to marking new seams directly in the UV editor. There is (confusingly) another Live Unwrap that you have to turn on in the 3D viewport in order for seams you add there to instantly update the UV. In 2.92 it's in the little Options button/menu in the top right, in some previous versions I think it's under the viewport's UV menu. Anyhoo loving the series/channel, these are super helpful! Cheers.

Great tutorial. Thanks. P.S. For all those who are stuck on the flint part (or what is the name for it), the reason why you have 3 parts of unwrap and not 2 like Mr. Abbit is because you need to use Mirror modifier. I got confused because we applied everything in Part 6.

This series is amazing. Thanks so much for doing this and going into such detail. I was thinking how the gun reminded me of a hunter in World of Warcraft. Then I suddenly remembered hundreds of players all gathered in the major cities at the same time, and every single one had at least two weapons. That’s a staggering amount of modeling, uv unwrapping and hand painted textures. And that’s just the weapons. No wonder Triple A games have such huge dev teams.

as a beginner, I often place a few seams, then 'auto-unwrap', auto-unwrap sort of, ' uses ' seams, so one can get a nice result, with a few seams or, so

Thanks for this tutorial, I'm a beginner and it really helped me to understand how to make a proper uv unwrapping and how to minimalise stretching. Very helpful video and it didn't seem to be too long :)

This is excellent, Grant... I really like the depth the episode has. The compare/contrast with ep7 and ep6 is great. This is not only the straight technique, but the WHY behind the technique and that advise is gold. I used to be a painter in real life and we had a saying painting is 90%/10%. 90 is prep and 10 is paint... Now when are you going to show how to do grass with this model (just kidding, I found loads of REF in your vid archives)... Cheers!

last, mipmap ' errors ' happen, bec. textures are given LOD's automatically, this has happened since like 2000 - 2010, not sure . . so, when you zoom out, and there's not enough bleed, it looks like texture get ' errors ', near the seams . . a 1024x1024 texture automatically generates a 512x512, then 256x256, that is put on model, as you zoom out . . this is standard in most 3D programs, also engines . . and, it actually has something to do, with objects not looking weird, when you zoom out . . trying making an object, set ' bleed pixel ' to, 2 pixels, fill it with a dark color, on a white-ish texture, so there's a lot of contrast . . when you zoom out, you'll start seeing ' errors ', on the seams . . as textures are compressed, the ' sharp ' pixels near the UV seams get compressed, into an ' average ' value, this is why . . :OO

2:01 "...[alt right-click] to select the edge loops..." should be [alt left-click]. You do say it correctly later on, but just so people don't get confused. in addition to the "Edge menu" and [ctrl e], you can right-click in edge select mode to bring up the edge context menu. Live Un-wrap is a bit funky. There's a couple buttons for it. The one I discovered that works is in the 3D Viewport > [N panel] > Tool > Options. I'm not sure what the Live Unwrap in the UV pane does. Nothing wrong with a 20 or 30 minute video. You can fit a lot more pertinent information than you could with a 5 or ten minute video. And you don't have any 'fluff' everything in this video has a reason for being here.

I don't know if you will do it, but I will wait for a series of videos from you about recycling old skins. For example, take a game object from game "Rust"(example) and remake the new one!) (I'm interested in most how to bake properly). Because I've tried to do it many times, but all the garbage comes out) somewhere there are errors(bugs), somewhere incorrectly baked, etc.) There are videos on RU-vid, but they all teach how to draw a picture through Photoshop :) And thank you for all your work! Great video!

remember, you need to have some ' bleed ' also, around the islands, other-wise you get mipmap-seams . . :OO it looks like, the color becomes weird, ' on seams ' :OO In Godot, you need a 24 pixel bleed, for a 1024 texture, Blender uses a lower number . . they appear, when you zoom out

also, you can set up a Mix shader, where alpha is the ' mix ' value and, paint on decals :OO

14:32 Don't tick the live unwrap from the UV editing space menu. There should be a live unwrap option in the context menu. idk why yours doesn't have it.

decals, can be much higher resolution, and all the ' empty ' space is compressed, in a .png

Hi, i followed exactly everything you said until there and it was just perfect, but when i unwrap it for the first time, around 5:12 in your tutorial, i don't have anything who looks like yours, but i applied the scale, i applied the mirrors, and set the island margin like you and all...I just don't understand why it's not working....I tried another time ( i mean, after 14 try) and blender crashed, when i reopened it, the shapes weren't the same, but i still have the same problem...It's all circles and all, with some above each others, with all the same settings as yours... Maybe it is because i'm in Blender 2.93 alpha but i don't think...Pls help

@@grabbitt Okay, i have find the problem, in fact, you said at the end of the part 6 that you have took off the auto mirror, while in didn't seen that you still got it in the part 7... I still have some messy things because of the flint thing and all but i think it will be okay, i'm happy i finally can finish your tutorial !! And congratulation for the 300k ! You deserved them ! ;)

Hello grant, I have a problem, I follow your steps but the image texture/material does not show when using the "material preview", BUT, if I try another approach such: as staying in solid viewport shading mode, then click on the drop arrow and select "Texture" the grid does appear on my model. I stil haven;t found out why I cant follow your steps, I am usign version 3.0 (maybe that could be idk) wonder if you could help me answering this. Thank you I love your vids and tutorials

last thing is, when I make a game, I often set a resolution, for a 1x1 meter plane . . to match that, to more complex objects, one can add a ' UV grid ', and when the ' grid ' on the 1x1 m plane matches, those on the object, it's about the same . . that way, games, content has a more consistent look, in terms of pixel ' density ', on objects, sort of :OO

Does the UV unwrap maintain texel density? Can you set a n texels per metre attribute or similar so you can maintain density across models?

@@grabbitt thanks for replying. I am not sure I've explained the problem well enough. If I select a portion of my model and unwrap, it will fill the UV texture space but I want to constrain the unwrapped size so that texels/m are consistent from unwrap to unwrap, so if I model a blunderbuss and unwrap that, the texels/m are consistent and therefore I can control the detail for near and far models by having a consistent texels/m. Does that make sense? i.e. 1m of world space = 1024 pixels in UV space, warping aside?

Been around for some minor versions, great tool. I like the built in multicolor with numbers texture too. If you get used to seeing it as applied, you can easily tell if it's warping from stretched UVs.

this is why, you need big island margins, in Godot it's 10 x more, than Blender . . that means, to use as few islands as possible, is prob. best

sir, whenever I export an image from blender and take it to photoshop, It shows the resolution (72ppi) Is there any way to get (300ppi) image from blender without the help of photoshop.

sir, when using and rendering in blender, my gpu( rtx 3070) performance is only 15 to 20% and the cpu (ryzen 5 3600) performance is 100% how can I get maximum performance from my gpu please help

He's teaching it so it's taking a bit longer than usual, but yes, game assets and other assets tend take a LOT of time to make, especially characters

I always say a detailed character are just as much work as the entire actual scene/environment they are in.

One probably develops their own patterns to do each step. Do it the same way every time. The process here is slower because it's being explained in detail and sometimes with alternate machanisms. This would be faster say as a time lapse, but IMHO, not as informational.

I have a rtx 3070 gpu. Let me know is this render time perfect for this gpu, or it can be improved more. #Render setting: cycle 5000 * 3000px 500 sample, denoising on, jpg high quality 3713 tiles ★render time = ( 12 minutes 13seconds) ★ Note: No texture was applied, just a package model with white bg
