I made a digital back for an old box camera, using a focusing screen made of the diffusing material from an old LCD monitor and some poster board. For similar experiments to this, check out the Fotodiox channel: / fotodioxinc
Man I love this SOO MUCH. Great idea and the results are dreamy and wonderful . Wish I hadn’t finally given up and sold my box cameras. Guess it’s time to go shopping! But I don’t have any old LCDs to cannibalize so not sure what to do about that. I wonder if you thought of also trying real ground glass?
Real ground glass would be even better! If you can get a real focusing screen that's the best way to go, otherwise there are lots of tutorials online on how to make your own. The LCD diffuser actually doesn't work as well, there's always a bright spot in the center where light is being transmitted through the screen.
A typical exposure outdoors was 1/60 s at f2 and ISO 400 or so. It varied a bit from that and the MX-1 stabilization helped. No tripod although I would rest the contraption on things like railings when convenient.
