No matter how this goes, the Falcons either wasted a draft pick on a qb they have no intention of playing, or they wasted a bunch of money on a big name veteran who gets benched for a rookie.

I was hanging out in the Bootleg stream last night and EJ had a pretty good call on what might've been going on - The Falcons may have been planning to draft Cousins' replacement *next* year, but with the tampering investigation were worried they might not have a 2025 first rounder. If the plan was always to cut or trade Cousins before the '27 season (and the contract is very team-friendly if that's the route they decide to go), then Penix with 3 years of backup experience is gonna be a much better QB situation in '27 than whoever they might end up drafting in '26 or'27.

Not just a 24 yr old QB who'll be at minimum 26 when he starts, but an INJURY PRONE 24 yr old QB. Poor Kirk. I'm sticking with the Bucs for the division crown.

As a life long falcons fan, I was initially shocked but not disappointed, thought we were going DT seeing as though the falcons never drafted a first round DT, but has had interior issues forever. I understand the job security that having these caliber of quarterbacks can create for the GM and head coach. Kirk was the only realistic option for us and we had to pay him in order for him to come here. Drafting Michael is a great future and current insurance policy. The falcons hedged a bet. I hope it works out.

As a Bills fan, it felt like the Bills played a late April Fool’s joke on us by making us sit through 95% of that draft dog and pony show before not drafting. Let’s face it. We were so far down we couldn’t get the WRs we wanted. And we didn’t need OTs or QBs. Fortunately many prime picks were ignored by teams scrounging for QBs. In the end we get to get the best of the 2nd round (made larger by that QB scrounging) and a couple more others we can use to make our team more youthful. It’s still fraught with risk but it’s not a slam dunk stupid move like the Falcons’.

how it happened: Why a QB when ATL already guaranteed Cousins NINE FIGURES? (setting aside Which QB they went with...) Because Kirk's achilles tendon (which holds his leg together) was still torn in half just a few months ago, and those things don't exactly "heal" in the full traditional sense. It's gonna basically be "old rubber band" status. They need a rock-solid backup plan.... apparently a backup plan that's had 10x as much orthopedic surgery as Cousins has :) lol as for why they paid Kirk a stupid amount of guaranteed money? It's some kind of mind control think Kirk's agent has. Those two extract money from otherwise smart franchises like crazy witchcraft. Canton's gonna open up a Kirk Cousins Wing at the HoF just for player-agent duos who extracted Obscene amounts of money from teams for providing only Mediocre play. He's a career 1-4 in the playoffs. He's a bit over .500 regular season. yet ATL's guaranteed money made him THE FIFTH HIGHEST-PAID FOOTBALL PLAYER EVER. Only 4 football players have ever been compensated More for their entire careers. 1-4 in the playoffs. Vikings: "We wasted hundreds of millions -and- a generation of talent on that guy" Falcons: "Hold my beer..." Skol!!

I am not shocked by this pick. Remember back in the old days QB's would sit for a few years to learn and become great. A lot of the greats did that. It became a trend to play QB rookies right away because they were paying them so much. I think they have looked to the future, similar to what Green Bay did with Love. Yea Rodgers wasn't happy at the time but now that he i gone it proved to be the right choice as Love looked pretty good in first year as a starter, tho being a Cowboys fan I hate saying anything positive about Packers. The fact they got Cousins makes this a good pick as to be fair Cousins will probably retire after this contract is done and if Penix can learn in that 2 years Falcons could potentially be setup for next 8-10 yrs t QB
