You might talk yourself into the pick in isolation, however big picture it’s bad process. Atlanta now have a TE, a RB and a backup QB as top 10 picks on rookie contracts. Those are not the positions where you maximize contract value having a rookie over a veteran.

EJ from Bootleg Football theorized (after a few scotches but forget that for a second) that the Falcons know or think that they are losing their 1st next year and therefore had to get ahead of the punishment by drafting a replacement for Cousins 1 year earlier than they would have originaly preferred. Again this is just a theory but I'm leaning that way and am terribly interested to see how this plays out. But it does seem like unnesserary drama and a bit of a questionable decision but at least with this theory I could see some justification for it.

If I was Penix Jr I wouldn't sign. He's gonna be 28 or so when he gets his 2nd contract and get screwed out of that too by riding the bench for most of his rookie deal.

Awesome content in pre-draft and the 2 full days of draft coverage!!! Well done to everyone on the team!! Critique from a production point of view. On the moment of the picks, the graphics took over the entire screen, so we always missed the first 5-10 seconds of the reactions. Would be great if the graphics came either slightly later, or shared the screen with the guys. So that, the totally raw, initial reactions, aren't lost!! So good though, well done to you all! AGAIN!

Definitely created a lot of chaos and thought the Falcons made a bad decision. Nothing against Penix but after giving that much money to Kirk the first step shouldn't be lets see who comes after, you have to be thinking how do we help this squad. Dallas Turner and Odunze were there and you went and spent the 8th pick on a guy whos gonna have to sit.

@@Justin-wl5pr point stands that Latu is better then turner and Latu was their guy. The money paid to Kirk was to A, snatch him from the Vikings. B, have him teach the future QB. It's not waste. Nearly 70 QBs played last year. We needed insurance. Penix will benefit heavily from learning from a true professional in Kirk. I wasn't a fan of the pick I wanted Latu for 3 weeks now but I'm starting to come around to it. After all they did try and trade back into the first round to get Latu as well

The move makes a ton of sense to me. The Falcons realize that winning franchises like the Packers let their QB SIT behind the starter and learn the system and the league for a few seasons. And 28 is not QB old, if it all goes right, he'll still have over a decade of great QB play ahead of him. A great QB is worth that risk.

C’mon, the draft industrial complex is causing you all to reaaallly overthink this. The logic of taking QB you think will be elite in couple years when you have a starter to provide couple years of development is proven. And if Penix becomes elite, he’ll have plenty of time in this league.

Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen are all 27 right now and are well established veterans. Mahomes is 28 and already has one foot in the HOF. 27 isnt old for a QB, but it is very old for a QB to essentially be a rookie. Look at Jordan Love. As much as he has been praised (rightly so) he went through the same growing pains all rookies do, even though he had years of sitting and learning. Halfway through the season it was still unclear if he was any good. Thats not the kind of thing you want a 27/28 year old guy to be dealing with.

The Chiefs were not "ripped" for taking Mahomes. And the Falcons literally just paid Cousins $100 guaranteed with $25M & $12M dead cap hits after two years just to be a bridge QB for an older rookie with an injury history.

The Love pick was ripped because of oppurtunity cost. That packers team continued to fall short. Who ripped them taking Rodgers? Who ripped the Chiefs for taking Mahomes (other than just thinking his game wouldn't translate to the NFL). If you need to fall back on strawman to support this, it shows you how weak your argument actually is.
