Durand, MI is located about 20 miles west of Flint along Canadian National's former Grand Trunk Western Flint Sub and houses the Durand Union Depot, one of the most architecturally unique railroad depots still in use today. The CN Flint Sub is the main contender in town, with upwards of 15-20 trains a day passing the depot. The Holly Sub branches off here and runs south toward Pontiac and Detroit. The Great Lakes Central and the Huron and Eastern also can make appearances, usually during the week. Amtrak's Blue Water Service trains 364 and 365 call the depot daily.
On a beautiful fall day in 2020, I spent the day around Durand after over a year hiatus. Westbounds were the predominant traffic most of the day, with the first eastbound arriving well into the afternoon hours. While the power is mostly GE products, there are a few surprises that snuck their way past me.
