You are my companion as I sew this evening. I'm making a throw. A friend gave me a pieced denim she thought I'd be able to use. I backed it with a turquoise minky I had. I'm not into as much garment making as I used to be, but I always find something to work on.

Your comment about no-one sews perfectly is true. The other is that we can all learn from beginners, even those of us who have been sewing and teaching for many years. We need to remain open to new ideas. Love your chats. A friend and I often just open up our cupboards and get the patterns down to go through, even if we don't sew them that day.

Thank you for the encouragement. I made a blouse & it was too big. My husband loved it. I’ll put it on & stand in front of the mirror & take in a little tuck thinking all I needed for it to fit perfect was this little bit! I’m going to fix that blouse now! I’m purchasing material on sale and I mean deep sale prices until I get better. I found some great buys at JoAnn’s yesterday on the aisle where the colored labels are on the bolts. Thanks again I needed your pep talk.

Hi Vivmom! Thank you for another delightful video - your humour, common sense and sewing skill and experience are a joy to watch. You are so right, self scrutiny and criticism in relation to our sewing is so wrong and we should enjoy each project and acknowledge in a positive way the time spent and lessons learnt from our mistakes. At 75 I still stand in front of the mirror looking for every little mistake, and my scrutiny finds plenty! Happy sewing!!
@vivmomsews4962
@vivmomsews4962 5 лет назад
We are our own worst critics, Kerstin, but we CAN change!! I’m working on it myself. It occurs to me how often I’ve absolutely denigrated my body, and yet it’s gotten me to this very day. Time for an attitude overhaul. It’s a fine line with sewing between precision and perfectionism. Sewing almost always gets better and that’s why I think witnessing the progression is so exciting. Thanks for writing!🌺

Oh my...you made me think about a dress I made in the 70s during my high school days. It was quite the detailed thing with front pockets, set-in sleeves, a tied in the back sash and top-stitching too....yes, top stitching. And I was so proud of that top-stitching. But there were a few little non-perfect areas in the top-stitching, and for me, I thought it probably showed a lot, but it probably didn’t. In my much younger days, I was into more detailed sewing, with pleats and tucks and things. Now, if I’m gonna sew, it needs to be pretty easy. I don’t even like to do zippers.

I love the beautiful intro to this video. So inspiring! What a great reminder! I've never been good at wearing my failures lol. I would have never known that one side of your garment is more narrow if you didn't point it out. I make stuff out side my comfort zone all the time. The envelope is so appealing. I made that new look pattern and the pleats aren't that bad. They're barely noticeable. Great patterns. I love that Betzina pattern. And the mccalls pattern that you scored twice. Wonderful!

Thanks Ivy! I want to always encourage new sewers (and old alike!😃) because I know how frustrated I can get with my own sewing at times. This is great feedback!

@@vivmomsews4962 Thanks. I'm not a new sewer, but a bit out of practice on making garments. I used to sew all the time, but got away from it for awhile, especially from making garments. I've started back sewing other things a couple years ago, but now I'm ready to get back to garment sewing as well. Thanks for continuing to inspire us!

My pleasure. I got away from sewing garments for years. Then I picked up a Vogue pattern and sewed a dress in late 2016. The instructions for the lining were incorrect and resulted in my lining being inside out. I was mad!! I wondered if there was website to post pattern reviews, and there was! That was it - I was hooked and here I am now, hundreds of garments later and no sign of being weary of any of it. I read about patterns and fabric until the wee hours almost every night. Simply can’t get enough! Meeting other like-minded people has been the most fun.😃

My granddaughter wears tops like your 3848 all the time. Buy a cami to go underneath! That’s why the armholes are so big and the back is gathered in so much. Love your choice of materials and patterns!

Love that when you fail you learn. You rock! Like you said we all make mistakes. Some bigger than others:/ If you learn something good from it then it's a win:) Made the New Look pleated skirt. It has been my summer go to, tummy pooch and all. So comfy.

I love the "lowered neckline"--lol In all reality, it just may choke you--lol Some of these patterns can be tricky--but, like you said--just keep on sewing--it's the best!!

On that armhole blouse, Shorten the straps which will bring up the depth of the armhole.then take in on the sides.it might fit. So pretty it must go to the party.

Viv put on a cute printed tank top under the shirt. Then pair it with jean shorts and flip flops and it will look awesome.

Hi Viv, love the fabric of the top you are wearing - it is just gorgeous and really suits you. I never noticed the width of the shoulders until you pointed it out. As for the top with the huge armholes, how about a couple of flaps sewn across the armholes now that might work... :))) I also love styles similar to yourself. Love the A-line styles, yolks, drop waists, incidentally looking forward to seeing your 1960s drop waist dress you are making. As always a great video and love watching you :)

Found you recently, last 2 weeks, and I have watched a good handful of your videos. Love them! Love your personality too, very down to earth and full of smiles and joy! My daughter, 10, has liked watching you with me. We are new to sewing and have a goal to see matching dresses for Easter. Also dresses for my other daughters: 6 and 4. I’m just gleaming knowledge on patterns and fabric right now. Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge and makes!

Hi Lisa! Welcome! So nice to hear from you, and of course I’m thrilled to hear that you and your daughter have a sewing goal! Yippee!! I love beginner sewers, or sewers who have returned after being away for a while. I stopped sewing when I had my third child at 38 and began home schooling my older two the same year. (We also moved that year, and my husband tore his Achilles’ tendon and was in a boot for 8 weeks. Quite the year!!) Then I sewed a dress out of the blue in late 2016. I sewed another dress, and another, and before I knew it I was head over heels in love with sewing again. My children are “launched” in the world and I have the luxury of time right now. Sewing with younger kids is a challenge but it’s a wonderful hobby to model for them, and look! Your daughter is interested! She may become a lifelong seamstress.💕Thanks again for writing and I hope to visit with you again soon!

Hi Viv, I like your pattern choices. We have to wear what we like & feel comfortable in or we won't chose to wear it. You know what looks best on you. I know a few people who have a certain body type (me included) & they wear skin tight clothes which only enhances the negative. It is a great thing to wear things that hides or distracts from our flaws.Take care & God Bless.

So true! Tight clothes reveal everything. They're also very uncomfortable. Once you sit down, they leave horizontal creases at the front and a bulge at the back, which is not a good look by the end of the day. Loose-fitting clothes usually stay nice and neat throughout the day; so much more comfortable as well.

I absolutely love your videos. Came across you quite by accident, started watching and boy I’m hooked. You have inspired me to start sewing again. I used to sew when I was first married out of necessity, sewed all my daughters clothes, even made shirts for my husband. As our financials became better started buying more ready to wear things and eventually stop sewing all together. But now that I have more time I’m finding sewing enjoyable again. Thanks for sharing your projects and tips. Your are a joy to watch, keep those videos coming.

I just Love your videos! You are so encouraging! The top you are wearing is so cute and I really like the material. I wonder if you could put a button or a faux tie on the small side and make it a design feature. Just a thought. That might be a cute but quick fix. Thank you for your wonderful videos!

That's a good idea, and while she's at it, put in a little tuck under the bow to fix that gaping neckline.
