The dry Mojave desert climate makes Mojave Air and Space Port an ideal location for aircraft storage. Numerous Lockheed, Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and Airbus aircraft that where once owned by major airlines are stored at this airport. Most aircraft that arrive at Mojave Airport will be scrapped, will some are being refurbished and returned to service.
With it's large supply of aircraft to use as props, the airport is used for filming action movies and commercials on a regular base.
This video is a composition of about 120 photos that where taken from a Cessna 172 while flying overhead Mojave Airport on November 3, 2012.

It's going to happen sooner than later... Most new aircraft are made of composites which have a lifespan of about 10 years, compared to aluminum which is pretty much indefinite if maintained properly... Look at DC-3s and -b-52s... Still flying

It may seem sad to watch these jets just sitting there. However, their useable lifespan is over. We should celebrate the fact that these planes carried millions of passengers safely to their destinations.

It's so strange to see aircraft sitting there, rotting away, waiting to be taken apart and made into soda cans when I see two airplanes that I've flown on before. There is a UAL 747 in the blue/white colors that I flew on in 2001 from LHR (London Heathrow) to IAD (Dulles). I was in business class, and it was such a nice flight and a really nice airplane. And now I see it just sitting there in the hot desert sun. The other airplane I flew on longgggggg ago: It is the Aloha 737-200 in the old colors that I flew on from OGG-HNL to catch my UAL flight home to the mainland. That was in 1985. Thanks for posting this video----so odd to look at these airplanes just sitting there. And to think that there are now 777s and 744s sitting there.....wow! How long until the first A380?

Visited this place in the spring of 2002. It was as windswept and dusty as anyplace i've ever been. We were allowed to go in, and I was surprised to be able to identify by livery and tail number a couple of planes I'd flown in. There were a couple of old CO 747's, including one I took from LAX-HNL. Also a bunch of old USAir MetroJets. Amazing place. Dry and windy as hell. There are big commercial wind turbines in the area.

@MrPerfesser
@MrPerfesser 7 лет назад
That was nearly 15 years ago, and we went to the office and simply drove in, parked, and walked around. Since then, the place has become much more than just a boneyard. It's now also a spaceport, used by folks from the private sector. I'm positive that security is much different now. I would google Mojave Air and Spaceport and contact them and ask about security. You might also want to contact one of the firms that does flight testing out of there. It's really out of the way, so I wouldn't want to send you there expecting to get in because we did so long ago. It's worth a trip, but make sure you have access and a point of contact before you go. Good luck!

Great video. Some interesting airplanes here. A 4 engine jet Convair (880 may be?), the two Sabre jets in NASA colors. One gray DC9 sliced beautifully like it would make a great roach coach; the ATI DC8 fleet looked well preserved and ready to go, even some 707s that look good (on the outside anyway). It also makes me realize my age,...Thanks for posting!

@ienes2
@ienes2 9 лет назад
I wouldn't use the word "rusting". These aircraft are stored at Mojave Airport because there is a low humidity grade there (it's a desert). And btw: not all the airframes standing @ Mojave Airport are getting scrapped. Some are just waiting for a new owner. And believe me, the Mojave desert is the best place to store airframes. I currently study Aeronautics close to Ostend Airport, Belgium (coastal airport) and I saw stored aircraft in worse state than in this video because of the high humidity and sea salt :) Greetings from Belgium (and my apologies for my bad English) :)

Does anyone remember Braniff? I'm an old guy. My dad was a pilot during WW2. When Europe was defeated, there were too many pilots and C-47/D-C3's, so lots of small airlines started up. He went to work for American when it was American Airways. About 1957, he went to train on the jets. Air travel was really special back then. I think back about walking through airports like I owned them, getting to go up in the cockpit and sit on the jump seat. It was an incredible life for a kid. Back to Braniff,, they were the forerunner to Southwest and they were NICE. They painted their planes all different colors and had the best looking stewardesses of all the airlines. No men and almost all single under 25. We lived in upstate Ny and he was based in NYC, but he would drive to Syracuse and then fly to NYC. If he bid on a flight from say LA to Hawaii, He would leave a day early to get to LA. Pilots always flew standby. So did the families, but it was free. If for some reason, you couldn't get on an AA flight, other airlines extended professional courtesy. That's how I learned about Braniff. Imagine just hitting puberty and being forced to get pampered by hot ladies for a day. It was a tough job but someone had to do it. Haha

My wife's father, Mr Edwin Gessele was a 40 year Veteran of the Boeing Company in Flight Test in Seattle ..along with 6 years in WWII in Naval Aviation in the South Pacific... He was also the crew chief on the prototype number 1 747 RA 001 AKA "The City of Everett" and better known as the Queen of the Skies. That airplane is now headquartered at the Boeing Flight Museum in Seattle after under going a remodel/ transformation. Mr Gessele had the distinct honor of being the crew chief on all of the Boeing World Sales demonstration tours with Boeing Airplanes. . I believe I see a Boeing 747 SP identified with "Southern Air" in the bunch of airplanes there. SP stands for "special performance" . I think? He was crew chief on the Boeing SP World sales tour. For some reason the SP never caught on with the airlines and Boeing ended up with only making about 40 of the SPS. The SP was also named the "WORLD TRAVELER" it was a long distance plane and was very fast! Now retired to the desert....How sad...

At 9:49 is a rare Convair 990 "Coronado". Note the large anti-shock body on the upper wings which were designed to increased the critical Mach and reduce transonic drag. I saw one like this that you can walk through on static display at the transportation museum in Lucerne Switzerland, while two are owned by the Mojave Spaceport. Of these, one is on display at the airport's entrance, and the other is used for movie and television filming projects.

@nigahiga6400

That's too young, Delta is still flying N661US, the very first 747-400 produced, first delivered to Northwest Airlines in 1989 (also involved in NWA85 incident). The 747 if properly maintained can fly for 30 years if they do only long haul. It would be understandable if a 1997 747 is scrapped in 2013 if it flew domestic routes in Japan. Iran Air still flies a 747SP that's over 37 years old, proof that it's a robust design.

Evan J I think the L-1011 was the most complete in design of any commercial jet. It just didn't have many (if any) faults. I, personally, did not like the RR engine sound when starting to rev. But those engines were very good. The DC-10 was a good airplane too, but was under-designed I think. The Convairs were amazing in some ways. But they had a lot of wing and engine for a small living space. Who could afford to fly them? Lockheed and Convair made the mistake of thinking that an "Nth Degree" design would profit them. Boeing skimps to make money. And Lockheed and Convair just could not compromise that much. They lost money and made exceptional airplanes!

Daniel O Carey Agreed. I would rather be on an L-10 but the worse plane won out in that bout. I also agree that kazoo like sound when the engines spooled up to maximum power was always a bit strange BUT you knew you were on an L-1011 when you heard that. Trent is having a hard time making engines as reliable these days as noted in a few recent incidents with BA and Qantas.

Evan J What's your take on the 787? Will it change the world? Will it be good for 30-years? Will there be a catastrophy from the electrical system or perhaps the composit structure?

Looks like my 1/144 airliners collection after I moved them in a Uhaul trailer from NC....except these are in much better shape!

This is weird seeing such iconic jets such as the Boeing 747, 767, Airbus A300, and almost every single McDonnell Douglas jet rusting away here. Also the L-1011 and DC-10 looking forward as they sit next to each other gives me a feeling that they say to each other, *We had a good run, but now it's time. I'm glad we'll go together.*

I think it was the early 80's , I would mt out north of LA. cut over at TEHACHAPI pass to Barstow and make my way over to El centro , I always would look forward to that airplane graveyard , it always seemed tranquil . Maybe all the people ,left their good thoughts flying to where ever , and somehow that soon to be scrap metal , has a bit of a soul.

It is all about parts. When I bought my first old car which ran for another 500,000 miles I soon realized that there is a wonderful world of old parts. Some of the electronics on these babies are worth a fortune.

Some of the planes in the yard are not retired yet.. they are just kept here. Thats why tour isn't allowed as some are still owned by the companies.

Counted at least 4 Northwest DC9s there...99.99% chance I piloted all of them in my past. Most of those DC9 were parked when the pressure bulkhead AD was due. That AD Hand a price tag of about 1 million $.

😢. Sad to know probably most of the 747-4's I've flown on with United are now decommissioned/out of service. I flew them with the old blue-grey "battleship" livery. Absolutely awesome planes that I'm sad aren't flying with US carriers anymore.

I agree with Pranav Dhakal, if I were rich enough, I would like to get one of the "Southern Air" short bodied fuselage 747's, and customize it for my own living quarters, and have my own pilot/navigator fly to where I would like to go. But I guess that is what dreams are made of (ideas).

As you can see, it is an airport. As a drone pilot you should be familiar with the rules about flying near or at an airport.
@AeroVisionNY

Actually I didn’t know it was an active airport. Of course, how else would the planes have gotten there? Silly question, I suppose.

I understand that many of these aircraft have a tremendous amount of flight hours on their airframes. We cannot guarantee their structural airworthiness!
