“Footballers have absolutely nothing to gain from taking drugs” former FIFA President Sepp Blatter once said. So why then is there such a history of players taking banned substances?
What is doping? Why does it happen? And what are the highest-profile instances?

Blood boosters increase the chance that a player suffers a cardiac arrest, quite significantly in fact. That is why when players like Eriksen collapse on the field, with 'no previously known medical conditions' as Spurs had stated, makes it look extremely suspect that he is in fact being doped.

It's everywhere. Ramos tested positive in a UCL final, nothing happened. I'm pretty sure Ortega has been giving PED in Atleti for a decade (how those players were able to play that intense in 2014 those many games is beyond human), it's no coincidence Pintus makes every team he goes a winner, with Modric 37 years old defending this world cup with more intensity than anyone else in that team. And let's no forget Operación Puerto, in Eufemiano Fuente's office they found many bags of blood, not only from cyclists but football and tennis players as well. I'm pretty sure the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo or Rafa Nadal are on something, that is just no humanly possible. Many Serie A players back in the 70s and 80s were on drugs, they said that themselves. And they played half the matches than today and with less intensity. One of them, I don't remember the name, said something of the like "we were on it playing 40 matches a year like Fiat 500. Now they play doble those games like Ferraris. What do you think?" The question isn't if football players take PEDs. The question is how much, the game demands it and either you take them or you don't play even 2ªB.

The only thing it had in common with a 'fairytale' was that it wasn't real 32 year old Wes Morgan recording record sprint speeds, whole squad going from recording the lowest running distances to 2nd highest in the league virtually overnight. it seems hard to believe that goretzka went from skinny midfield pivot at schalke to incredibly muscular bullish midfielder at bayern in a matter of months. At first, he really didn't have that much muscle at bayern, but then he gained so much muscle mass suddenly and it was hard to miss. His body, while definitely attainable on paper, still looks incredibly unnatural in ways that traditionally muscular men just don't. I know it's not like you can just inject some steroids and suddenly you're the buffest man on the team but his transformation is suspicious. It's also weird how gnabry got bigger and slower as soon as he moved from hoffenheim, and it's subtle but I'm pretty sure hummels was larger specifically during his short time at bayern, even though the change of kit can definitely have an impact on how your body looks.

Fantastic video, thanks for this level of research. I'm a big fan of cycling too and obviously it has a history, but it also feels like the sport tries hard to stamp it out. Football very much gives the impression of looking the other way as much as possible. One case that might be of interest is Operacion Puerto; Dr Fuentes was at the heart of the biggest doping scandal in cycling since Festina in 1998 and it resulted in a lot of cycling's biggest names receiving lengthy bans. The cyclists were identified by the sport but the lab held blood bags of footballers, athletes and tennis players who were never named. Real Madrid have some legal action against him ongoing as he's heavily hinted that they knew him and wondered why other names never came out. Worth a look up, especially considering Spain's 'golden age' of sport 10-15 years ago.

Barcelona and their connection to doping hasn't been talked about. Pep Guardiola doctor who helped dope was their team doctor for 4 years. Lance Armstrong's doctor who helped him dope was also working with Barcelona players, with the club admitting " he may have worked with them". Xavi was also exposed by Graham hunter who said he was taking growth hormones to recover, before realizing the mistake he did and taking back his statement. And then comes the suspect rise of Messi... coinciding with pep and his doctors before suddenly injuring him self after 2012. Or the fact Spains' world cup team was heavily implicated in a doping scandal involving doping but was covered up by the Spanish government.
