A Guide to Masteries for Guild Wars 2 - Where, How, and Which ones First? 

Nearly 9 year veteran, just watchin this video for kicks cause I thought I knew all I needed to know about this. I had no idea you could filter achievements at all, let alone by mastery points. Great video.

Well, I was today year's old when I found out that the achievement tab has also a filter... thanks Muk ^^ How did I miss that, I don't know.

All these years and it never occurred to me to use the achievement panel filters. I feel dumb now.

The thing you need to know from this video: 1. Cherry 2. Sour apple 3. Watermelon 4. Hot dog water ;)

Probably should have mentioned that each mastery can only gain experience in its respective maps.

Griffon races in Path of Fire gives a ton of XP as well! I used to do them for the new masteries we got from LWS4. Took maybe 3-4 races (depending on the XP amount needed) and it was filled up 😁

Again Mukluk shows his reasons to be our ever loving Lord and Master. I did not even know you could filter search for Masteries. Thank you for this wisdom, your Muk Chosen shall now even be more worthy to spread your teachings.

The only other thing I can think of for masteries that you didn't cover is that you don't lose exp progress on a mastery if you swap over to train a different one. This can be really helpful if you're training a mastery but don't have the points to unlock it - you can still fill up the exp bar, then switch to training another mastery while you finish getting mastery points for the first one.

I started GW2 recently and just hit level 80 for the first time. I won't lie, I was a bit lost on what to do next. Thankfully, a quick google search turned up this video and it was super helpful! Short and efficient, it gets straight to the point of explaining the basics of mastery advancement and where to go to find points (the main issue I was struggling with). Thank you for this awesome video. :)

Possibly mentioned already, but I highly recommend Updraft (gliding track) and Bouncing Mushrooms (Itzel track) for more ability to traverse maps (specifically HoT maps) with a lot more ease and flexibility. Additionally, these two masteries are very early in their tracks as well :)

When i started playing GW 2 a year ago i started following Muk for "how to make GW 2 less complicated" guides and this one is great to help you start with knowing what Masteries are, i wish i gunned for the Auto loot first but i didnt read it all so i thought auto looting was bugged or non existant in the game but i got there eventually thanks for watching Mukluk on twitch. So be it guides, story times or pvp decisions i love them all keep up the good work Mukluk and hope to see more Noxxi sheninagans editing in the future, i just love it !

Not sure if you said that (maybe i missed) but you if you don't have points to assign a mastery you can always change to another to not wasting the experience. Also each region will have a different bar so you could level different ones ""at same time""

You can also do bounties or join a bounty train in PoF or Season 4 maps if you wanna quickly get those mounts. (Since you don't need to wait around for a timer for bounties.) Great guide! I never knew you could filter masteries in achievements. That changes everything! Time to start achievement hunting!

Wow, I have played for over 5 years by now, and never bothered to use a filter. Thanks Muk! Something worth mentioning might have been the Watch List and it's limitations (e.g. maximum amount of entries)

:) Thanks this really helped. I’ve been plying for 5years now and I still struggle with filling the mastery bar purely due to me not doing meta events frequently. Now that I know they give so much I’ll be sure to do them daily.

I feel that I have to mention that Drizzlewood Coast fills up your mastery exp WAY faster than Strikes do. When the final tier of Dragonslayer came out I did a full run of every strike and got maybe 15% of the bar filled. I think went to Drizzlewood and did events there for about 30 minutes or so and got the rest of the bar. The exp from mobs and events is just so much better than what Strikes offer. When the Skimmer underwater mastery came out, it fell on a day that my static was doing Wing 7 and that filled up around 75% of my mastery bar after a full clear. I then went and got the rest of it by flying through volatile magic hanging in the sky over Jahai Bluffs. Fun Fact: There's enough volatile magic in that map to pick up to reward around 3 levels of exp to a character below level 80 per day, and yes you can totally get a character who is that low level into Jahai so long as you have a roller beetle to outrun mobs.

Thanks. I was utterly clueless before and am now ... slightly less clueless. I'll be bookmarking this under Games/GW2 for later reference as there is way to much to remember - w/o doing. .

Adventures (the little mini games, mount time trials, whatever they got going on in Drizzlewood, etc.) can also give a nice chunk of daily mastery exp, on top of some rare unidentified gear if you manage to get gold

Id throw in there that you can start working on these only on level 80 characters and in zones relevant to that masteries of that area of Tyria. I'd also say to make sure you actively spend the point once the exp bar is full otherwise the exp is just wasted. Also that little golden number you see next to people's name is their "mastery level" which is a total of all mastery points spent, not number of tracks completed. Its not a sequential leveling system.

For ordering of masteries, I'd HIGHLY reccomend getting your mount masteries done after the priority ones Muk listed. The dinky raptor jump pales in comparison to the upgraded one from masteries, healing when you pass over allies with your engage attack is useful on the Skimmer especially on maps like drizzlewood coast where you can go across water to a big fight, the barrier is extremely useful with the Jackal, and you can do 12k damage in a single hit regardless of build with the griffon if you have enough momentum. Wall launch is really useful for the skyscale and makes its flight bar not feel so small and near useless (if you don't have it yet, use one of the skyscales found in Dragonfall. They are masteryless)

You can turbo charge the Exp bars with boosters. I have an alternate amulet for my main with an experience enrichment. The exp bars aren't a big hurdle when the masteries come out one at a time, but if you've got a whole section to do it can be a sanity saver.

Nice! Now that I got my expansions(TY to you and the community and Gab who donated AP code) this guide been very useful. I'll warn the noobs(returning noob in my case) like me to watch which mastery your training once you are able to level up.. It might not be the one you thought you were still training. An example once I completed Glider Basics.. it set Itzel Lore as the next mastery to level.. I did not notice this. I thought it would continue down the Gliding mastery path(Updraft Use). Though Itzel Lore is useful (mushroom bouncing/jumps).. so it wasn't wasted exp after all. Also the filter tab.. Hehe..

I've just realized I play this game for years and never pressed the cog in the achievement menu and never knew you could filter achievements lol

Fractal dailies will also net a lot of core tyria XP aswell as achievments/mastery points related to specific fractals

Mastery order is very important because points are increasingly harder to grind. For my recommended new player mastery route: - core Tyria: fractal attunment(maxed) > auto loot / skip legendary crafting all together until later on. Ramping up your fractal agony resist and power level is the most important thing to do early on if you are a pve guy. The less you "waste" mastery point on core Tyria, the faster you can focus on other content. You get mastery xp in fractals, wb trains and silverwaste, be sure to actively farm the be all end all achievment in parallel. Both Pact Commander and Fractal attunement are extremly beneficial to your account, be sure to max them asap. - HoT: ancient magic mastery rank 4 > nuboch lore rank 3(usefull on meta event) > exalted lore rank 4(usefull on meta event and rank 2 is required for Herta) > ley line glinding (and whatever you need for achievments). Every HoT mastery gives pretty decent benefits but it is generally related to HoT content. Ley line gliding is usefull in later areas and ancient magic rank 4 is really strong all the time. Farm meta events to get mastery points there, octovine is not the best for that but it certainly gives plenty of gold. - PoF: Raptor= Springer= Jackal rank 3 = Skimmer rank 2 > crystal champion rank at least 3 > Skyscale maxed > Raptor rank 4 > beetle / griphon (this is mostly optionnal, but the races are fun). Skyscale volatile magic farming is the best xp method in Path of fire / LW4 content. Farming a skyscale is extremly painfull, but oyu'll get there. - Icebrood: Raven rank 3 > essences rank 2 > united legion waystation rank 2 or 3 > Dragon slayer (maxed) > waystation maxed > 1 essence rank 4 > 2 other essences rank 3 > 2 other essences rank 4 (you want maxed dragon slayer because of the chance of getting a 3K gold item on top of it beeing itself a very decent way to grind reliably gold in party without too much pressure? Every mastery level is relevant in Icebrood.

If you're working on an alt account and are slightly insane like me, finish the PoF story, get the griffon and its masteries first, then do the griffon challenges in each map for an absolute metric ton of experience for the masteries you're still missing. Also pretty good if you're short on spirit shards.

Another useful tip, if your mastery bar is maxed out but you don't have enough points to unlock the next stage of progression, your experience will still earn you spirit shards when you "level up" in the background

2 More things: 1. Adventures gives large XP chunks as well (once per day). PoF Griffin adventures can be completed very quickly for a massive XP gain. 2. If you go to gw2efficiency, and navigate to Stats -> Unlock Statistics -> Achievements, you can filter out the achievements that gives mastery points of your flavour, and sort the achievements after how many have completed them. If many people have completed an achievement, it is probably an easy one to do.

I feel like End of Dragons masteries will be a saltwater taffy or lemon/lime flavor instead of cotton candy flavor. Not sure why. Also hotdog water for the Icebrood saga masteries made me spit out my drink.

I have been pondering this monumental question as well: what color will EoD Cantha mastery points be? Jade is green, but HoT took green, won't it be confusing? Whatever the color is, it should be such so noticing it on maps is super hard: Hot Green blends in with green maps, PoF purrple blends in with branded territory, and Icebrood saga blue blends in with snow! My guess is.. drum roll. White. Because Aurene? White blends in with everything. It's just perfect :D

So do I go for all 3 essence manipulations (tier 3) first or Finish off Dragon Slayer Masterys? Only have 5 brood saga mastery poins right now.

Well you need the Lore Masters to get the gift of the jgl wich is necessariy for a gen 2 legendary. Or you can do all of PoF masters except the under water mount for a gift of the sand.

The only mastery set that felt hard is the icebrood which does have a decent amount but semi aggravating in it is slim on easy pickups in certain parts.

I only maxed out the masteries because I wanted to have the number 366 above my characters name 🤣✨

Since Mastery points on come in xpack flavors, would it be wise to not get season content?

Resurrecting other people is broken when it comes to exp rewards, slap on some healing gear and wait for people to die at these large events, I do this whenever I need fast exp on masteries, you can easily double or triple the amount of exp you get during a hard event by doing this.

Question, aren't some of at least the HoT masteries, other than gliding, required to complete the story? Was wondering because you didn't mention it and if so then shouldn't people get those first before, say, maxing out all of gliding?

I got a question... I just finished the main story, I'm level 80 and bought the three expansions. Do I need to do all these things you show in the video (and more small things like that) in order to build my mastery rank? So XP now is useless? Please someone clarify this to me, as if it is the way I think, I kinda regret buying the expansions, as I like leveling up, not doing small things to get rewards that I won't even use (maybe)

Is there any discord for Newbies\PUGs doing strikes? I want to give Strikes a go so bad. but LFG is ether dead or there is some sort of code in promotion message. And i remember the time Mukluk said that people who ask for KP or any links in Strikes are mental. well 80% of what i'v seen ask that.

This is my problem- I don't play for "mastery-points". I wander around trying to have fun, and I suppose I will (and have) gradually acquired many of them that way. In the meantime, past level 80 and the ability to pick up drops automatically, I am constantly annoyed by this pop-up that keeps insisting: "Your current ability is fully trained and ready to master" And I just can't find a way to get rid of it. I click on the "x" to remove it, it will pop up again within 30-50 seconds. Worse, it completely covers my chat. In GW1 I could resize and move the UI around, but I can't seem to do a thing with this. Thing is, I don't give a damn about "fractals", and I have absolutely zero interest in crafting - So it will be a _very_ long time before I acquire the mastery-points for these things. I've been playing one version or another of Guild Wars for about 15 years, so I know that won't change. The only advice I really need about mastery-points is how to get rid of this increasingly irritating notification. "Hints" are one thing, so are "reminders" - This is *_nagging..._*

I only learned today about Raid masteries after noticing people have 514 mastery level and I only have 506 and fully mastered everything

Don't forget that if you use Bond of Life and your mount dies, you die aswell... and probably IRL too so be careful. On other helpful tips, you do NOT need to do fractals nor Raids to get enough points for masteries i have Core, HoT and PoF without even looking at Raids or fractals.
