I'm not sure that really counts as a "backpedal" as it's more of a "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" situation but it was pretty damn funny to watch happen in real time. I was working at Toys R Us when that happened... we all had a good laugh at Sony's expense over it.

The Move existed before the Wiimote, but was shelved until after the Wii launched. The entire gaming industry was going in that direction at the time, but people think that because Nintendo marketed it first, they invented it.

@@HeymrkNo, the Move didn't exist until after the Wii. What you're thinking of is the Eye Toy which existed on the PS3 before the Move and had an earlier incarnation on the PS2. The Move used the Eye Toy as a substitute for the sensor bar that the Wii. Afterwards, the Move was used as controllers for the PS VR on the PS4.

6:50 Man, I remember when Sony tried to claim that the rumble would also not work with said motion controls and had to go.... people were quick to point out that the then competing Nintendo Wii console seemed to have no issue with a controller having both motion controls and rumble.

I miss it though. These days I have to open every controller I buy to remove the useless rumble motors from them to enjoy a lighter controller. I've even found the new "HD rumble" in the Switch and the PS5 to be pointless.

One of the big problems with Don Mattrick seemed to be that Kinect on the Xbox 360 was his baby and while it did OK, it wasn't the mega success he'd obviously hoped for so when the Xbox One was developed he saw that as the opportunity to push Kinect even harder by basically tying it to the system at hardware level and trying to force people to give it a go whether they wanted to or not, probably thinking that 'if only they'd try it, they'd like it!' Obviously this backfired spectacularly. Basically Don Mattrick was more interested in pushing the Kinect, as that's what he'd originally worked on, rather than the Xbox One itself. And that coupled with Phil Harrison as the other frontman of marketing at the time was the perfect recipe for a disaster.

To this day, you can buy pretty much every single SMT/Persona game on the PS3's store for a combined total of around 80 bucks. It's insane. I myself bought Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Suikoden II, Klonoa, and Tron Bonne for next to nothing.

Netflix also reduced piracy of movies and shows during its brief monopoly, a situation which has reversed itself due to everybody and their moms getting their own platform and making it obnoxious again...

Gamers weren't the only ones worried about the digital stores closing. For some indie publishers, the PS Vita store was the only place they could have their new titles for sale. If that store closed, it could potentially put a lot of indie publishers out of business.

My only Xbox was a 360 and that's how it's going to stay with the complete lack of true exclusives and Game Pass Ultimate on PC (I thought Halo 5 and Halo Infinite were true exclusives, boy was I wrong). I have no need for an Xbone or XBSX. I've had a PS2-PS4 though. It's not like Nintendo's much better of course, the Wii and Wii U were the only Nintendo home consoles with backwards comparability, the Wii U was a massive failure (I mean, not as much as the Virtual Boy but still) though so it hardly counts. Plus they shut down the Wii Shop Channel and the eShops for the Wii U and 3DS and NSO doesn't have official emulation for _any_ handhelds, Wii or Wii U and even if they did, they drip-feed games. For a company that's been so aggressive against copyright infringement (NOT pirating, illegal copying, theft and piracy are legally distinct from copyright infringement), they sure act in ways that encourage it.

@@mattwo7 Not entirely true, the WiiU and 3DS shops are still open for just a little while longer. You need to link your switch account to them to deposit funds, but man is it a hassle. The Xbox 360 had an amazing library, and at least half of all the best games of the original Xbox available to it. I just picked up a copy of Chromehounds from a retro shop I like to visit. One of my favorites on that system.

I also don't care about the DoA franchise. But thanks for jumping to conclusions when you don't know the first thing about me, this is why I hate knee-jerk reactionaries on _both_ sides instead of just the right. Here's a couple more:- -MS tried to charge PC gamers to play online with their "Games for Windows Live" service (Xbox Live ported to PC). They backpedalled less than a year after it was launched. -Xbox One requiring the Kinect 2.0 to be plugged in at all times. Also NSA leaks in 2013 confirmed that you could indeed be spied on via the Kinect's camera.

I remember just about every one of these stories as they were happening. Also, Sony did end up shuttering one PS Store after all. That one being for the PSP, but I don't think anyone really went on there anyway since you can buy games only playable on PSP on the 3 and Vita stores.

Imagine not having FMVs or not having CD quality audio. Games like the Final Fantasy titles were impossible to pull off on the likes of the N64. There's a reason why developers chose the PlayStation. "CDs shouldn't have been a thing until DVDs were a thing." Lol.

@@Gatorade69 friendly reminder that nintendo wanted to stay with cartridges because they wanted that sweet sweet manufacturing money. Cartridges had to be made according to what it was needed to develop a 64 game, even some snes cartridges were more expensive to make to achieve things like poligons in star fox A lot of third party devs were mad at nintendo for not choosing cds, Thats why most of the n64 library is just games made by nintendo themselves

I can almost guarantee you Sony was planning similar requirements for the PS4 as the Xbox One, based on the pre-installed undeletable Playroom which needs the PS Camera to be used (similar to forced Kinect connection). I think I read up on Sony planning similar DRM as well. We all know how much piracy screwed with Sony with the PSP, and their overcorrection with the PS Vita. Microsoft always being the first at E3 gives Sony the chance to react to Microsoft's mistakes.

The PS2 backwards compatibility of PS1 was a factor in buying the console over the GameCube and original Xbox. And the irony is they got rid of backwards compatibility in later PS3 models, while Xbox 360 got original Xbox support throughout the generation!

@@656hookemhorns not all models especially the ones that don’t have a hard drive. At least most Xbox 360 models have backwards compatibility, unlike the PS3 which only the models from 2006-2007 play PS2 games. And most Wii models play GameCube games!

The PS3 backwards compability was a bit of a shitshow in itself. EU variants never even got hardware emulation and Sony pretty much abandoned the sofware version in an alpha state.

@@strugglesnuggledslime7040 it’s mostly because of the high price of $600 for the premium model, and they decided that certain components were expensive. They were also selling the PS2 consoles around $100 the same time as the PS3 dropped the PS2 compatibility feature.

Microsoft charging higher prices for their online for the original XBOX was disgusting especially when they locked things behind a paywall. For instance, in Toejam & Earl 3 I was not able to obtain the final rank since some of the missions were behind say paywall. I barely was able to beat the final boss. Truthfully, I never really cared for the rumble feature since in most games if they allowed customization, I usually turn it off.

i actually REALLY like rumble, but only when it's well implemented. which is never. old gen 6 games used to have great, very creative uses for it as a tool extend the players senses to a third one other than just sight and hearing, as well as another source of special effects. they were specially good for horror games, as a early way to "feel" curses and enemies, build atmosphere or even just transmit world building information like the heartbeat of your character. then they stopped caring and only used it as a shitty "shake" function. everything that happens triggers the rumble at max force on both sides. boring.

Well, that's why giving players options should be the standard. If you like rumble, you can keep it on, otherwise you can just turn it off.

Oi Larry, got a bone to pick mate. Regarding the DRM segment of the video, you called the Cable TV functions of the XBox One useless, however, that HDMI-In port isn't just for cable boxes, I've been using mine to plug in my 360 and run it off the TV app since late 2013 after I got my Day One console. I was clued into the true capability of that function when I randomly came across a video claiming you could play GTA V (which had just released a couple months prior on 360) on the XBox One, now while the video was kind of a prank for clicks, it actually teaches you that you can plug in literally ANY HDMI device (360, PS3, PS4, DVD player, PC, Wii) into that port and run it off the TV app. Personally, I use it to play 360 games while chatting in the XBox One version of Party, really comes in handy for boosting achievements in 360 games while still being able to chat on XBox One and running the whole thing off one screen instead of two consoles on two screens simultaneously. In any case, never overlook the true capability of a function without doing research mate, you really stepped in it this time.

@@midorifox - More than nine years later, I'm still finding people on XBox Live who didn't know they literally have a port on the back of their XBox One/One-X/One-S that allows them to port through literally ANY HDMI device be it a game console, a PC, or a media device like a BluRay player, it's bloody amazing how it's not the most common knowledge about the console itself. I use it all the time to port in a 360 into my One to get achievements on 360 games that aren't Backwards Compatible to the One with friends while chatting with them in the XBox One Party, bloody easy and fun it is!

Love the video but I gotta point out something, the PS2 Online was locked away and had to purches a diffrent set of parts to play online, And PSO needed a subscription called a "Hunters Pass". Its one time but it is needed to play the game and so far the only way I knew how to get it was Purchesing it online though the Dreamcast itself.

PS2 comparability was removed from later PS3 revisions as a cost-cutting method. Also, I turn off haptics every chance I get. The controller constantly shaking annoys the hell out of me.

You forgot to mention the most egregious thing about the launch of the XBOX ONE's "always online feature": the *ALWAYS ONLINE FEATURE* is extended to their bundled motion capture camera and mic when connected to the device, which basically turns the damn console into one big 24/7 anti-privacy surveillance device because even when in sleep mode the thing is *ALWAYS* listening. This got some governments up in arms and actually planned to *BAN* the console from their country until Microsoft was forced to "patch" the firmware. Imagine this: you'd "Netflix and chill" with your significant other and your XBOX ONE console will supposedly (unbeknown to you) "record" and possibly livestream your amateur porno online.

And anyone old enough to have played consoles before PS1 and N64 as they were growing up. I still remember first experiencing rumble in those consoles and thinking "this is crap, how do I turn it off?" Easy enough on the N64 of course, just don't use the rumble pak. But even to this day, I disable rumble in games and at the system level, as well as open controllers to remove the motors because I prefer the weight reduction.

Tyvm for not picking a side and just put both of them on blast lol Edit: I’d ask why couldn’t Sony just add some sort of security and just patch the ps3 and vita ofw, but it would be wasted time since these platforms were broken wide they’d have to fix any sort of jailbreak to make sure whatever security they implement can’t just be cloned off a jailbroken ps3. This would require changing the security keys on every pressed blu ray since the signing keys were leaked forever ago. Basically anything security on ps3 is a complete waste of time and money now. Bet they have some way to prevent a single key being leaked becoming the “keys to the kingdom” nowadays.

System launch times are always pretty dark times, if you work retail. I was in those trenches during the run-up to the PS4 and XBONE launch, with all the news coming out about Microsoft's DRM and "always online" stuff. The horror... the horror.

Oh Lord, I sympathize - I was working at Toys R Us during the heyday of the Wii, 360 and PS3 and while there weren't any major events quite as ... controversial as with PS4 or XBONE, there were enough problems with those launches that caused no shortage of headaches for employees, i.e. chronic Wii shortages and the removal of backwards compatibility for PS3.

I was actually working in frozen foods and scalpers would come up to me to see if they could bribe me to go in back to get the ones "we were hoarding" becasue a rumor had broken out that we had a small stock pile but would only sell a limited amount at a time to control lines. I am a qualified personal trainer with qualification in nutrition and I know how much work goes in to what you have done. It's very commendable and very very inspiring. Any of Larry's fans who want to get fit or lose weight....just make a commitment and stick with it... You don't have to run 10km straight away or anything like that... If its promising to walk for 30 mins a day or giving up that second takeaway in a week.. Every journey starts with one step. You can do it. Even if you dedicated 30 mins a day to be more active, or set a goal on your pedometer... Just do it. The hardest thing is getting up and doing it... The working out is easier! There are loads of ways to get fitter and loads of tiny chabges you can make. Believe in yourself. You are a Larry fan then I know that you are a cool person and I wish you all the best and loads of support on any journey you take 👍

The durability has decreased tremendously with PlayStations, my original gray controller and ps2 still work perfectly, but both my ps3s and my ps4 are out of commission. I must’ve bought the wrong versions, that’s another thing that annoys me is how there’s like 3 or more versions of each console now, maybe my ps3 would still work if I didn’t buy the “wrong” ones.

I was told that they couldn't get the vibration function and the sixaxis motion controls to fit into the controller. Since almost no games bothered with the motion controls, Sony then released the DualShock 3.

Companies tend to introduce awful anti-consumer practices one by one to get their userbase to slowly accept them, learn to live with them and eventually even defend them. Stuff like DRM, cut-content DLC, microtransactions, lootboxes, etc. went from reviled to considered normal part of gaming by virtue of slowly accustoming the userbase to them. The problem with the Xbox One launch is that it tried to introduce too many of these changes at the same time. Microsoft has now realized this and it's slowly putting them all back one by one, so people aren't getting mad because there's not the shock of too many bad changes at once. It's a sad dystopian reality, but that's how the world works.

And you can occasionally see people defending them, claiming they're "fun surprises" like packs of collectible cards. There's no more DRM on Series X than there is on PS5. The "can't play an Xbox One disc game on Series X when installed offline until connecting" issue was taken out earlier this year, the issue with not being able to play digital content when the servers are acting up is a "not playing on your Home/Primary console" issue that all Sony and Microsoft consoles from 360/PS3 onward deal with.

The $120 a year Live story was one I missed. I thought you were going to talk about the Games For Windows Live service on PCs which originally was going to demand all Microsoft PC games be locked behind the Xbox Live Gold pay wall if you wanted to play them online. PC gamers laughed the idea out of the room. The idea of making PC gamers pay to play their games online after over a decade of doing it for free was certainly bold, if incredibly stupid.

The fact he's gotten gigs in Microsoft, Sony and Google suggests he's genuinely a smart individual, who's been put in a position purely for his title to mean he takes the blame. Take him out the equation and the history of these controversies would be the same, just a different name taking the blame. Would Google stadia be any better with someone else leading? It was a doomed project attempting to use tech that would never be ideal decades before it could be mastered. Would him not being at PlayStation have prevented a lawsuit that began years before he joined? Would Microsoft decide not to do what it had been trying since the first Xbox had you or I been in charge? Don't get me wrong he could still be a greedy dick or the second coming of christ, ultimately we can't exactly blame him over decisions he has no say in

I remember a TV show called 'The Money Program' here in the UK that covered the launch of the Xbox 360 and Phil Harrison was working with Sony at the time and said, in all seriousness, that Sony had nothing to fear even though the PS2 was now starting to look obselete as the PSP would 'easily' dominate the worldwide christmas market and crush the Xbox 360's sales as the 'Playstation' brand was just that strong, and people would flock to the PSP simply because 'Playstation'. He stated that it'd easily take the handheld market from Nintendo simply because 'Playstation' as well. The guy really has drunk too much of his own Kool Aid.

Excessive "fratboy culture" as per the state of California, sexual discrimination within World of Warcraft development, the "Bill Cosby Suite", the firing of many senior devs named in the lawsuit, a company walkout by most female (and male) employees in protest, a new CEO that resigns within months. All for a huge name development company. I think you will find it very entertaining to research, the fallout of this lawsuit made widespread changes within World of Warcraft to remove anything upsetting including renaming an entire zone within the game
