Only kind of related, but I'm in the middle of a horror podcast that had an entire episode dedicated to claustrophobia. The characters had become buried within the Earth, dirt would get into their mouths, they could barely breathe, couldn't move, you could hear them gasping for air while they were trying to find comfort with each other as they came to terms with dying. It was all very surreal and haunting, the VAs had done an amazing job. For anyone curious, it's called The Magnus Archives. I listen to it on Google Podcasts, but it's also on iTunes and virtually any other site that hosts podcasts. It's a fictional horror podcast. You follow they employees of an establishment in London called The Magnus Institute whose main goal it is to get statements from people who've experienced things that are supernatural in nature.

want to know what this guy plan was, goes in alone in a house full of corpses and decides to go to the basement alone, finds a creepy cave and decides to go in without backup, notices the cave getting narrower and still decides to go in, reaches a point when its almost imposible to advance and still takes the chance, if it wasnt after watching the internet historian video on the cave then any kind of immersion would be nothing.

I think it’s a mix of adrenaline stupidity and a desperate desire to be useful (heroic) resulting in brazen decisions. He even said he was prepared to fight, alone, against an unknown assailant. That’s crazy. Seems more like looking for trouble for the thrill than some sort of investigator. Like, extreme divers and cavers do similar things where most people would balk at the idea of squeezing through passageways with a crawl, but they do it. (Though not to say cavers and divers are stupidly brazen. They have a lot of rules and backups and equipment and often go with a partner. It’s the overconfident non-qualified ones that often die outside freak accidents) So I can see someone like MC starting the first crawl because “tight squeeze but I can do it. It’s fine”, but at a certain point, it’s impossible to turn around, so he can only force himself forward. Ofc this is all with a big dash of extreme stupid recklessness lol especially with the peeled corpse being the first thing he sees entering the house. Horror genre MC syndrome lol.

That happened to a younger college girl and the spot and place where she got stuck was too narrow to crawl any further but too steep to crawl back out she didn't have the strength to push herself back out and to make matters poor girl was stuck in between the floors of an unused parking garage so nobody was even there to hear her cries, agonizing screams for help, water, food...anything for help! I cannot even imagine. Id rather be burnt to death in the open then die under ground unable to breath the air, see the trees, etc. Anyway, She died because she essentially overheated....which I believe it's hyperthermia? I forgot the rest of the story :) its been a while but you can find it on Mr.Ballen's channel on YT.

I think everyone that has ever done more 'intense" caving in their lives remembers their first. "I'm stuck" moment. That panic slowly crawling to the top. The "I can't breathe" feeling. The want to just stretch out. It can quickly become an all consuming panic. Imo, learning to stifle that fear is one of the hardest hurdles to over come when getting into caving. . Learning to calm down and understand you're not really stuck 99% of the time. You just gotta calm down and slowly work your body thru is an incredibly hard mental thing to over come.

13:43 there was a cave explorer who got stuck in a tunnel system. Only his feet sticking out. He thought he was crawling through the tunnel called "the birth canal" but he was actually stuck in uncharted territory. His family contacted the fire department because he was upsidedown and only had a few hours. He didn't make it. The blood was rushing to his head and so the authorities closed off that tunnel so no one would ever try that again. He had a wife and baby at the time. Edit: His name is John Jones. I think the tunnels trap different people 'exploring' and being trapped like that brainwashes them, drives them to believe they are inhuman and need to kill to survive. Very cool dlc for the game. It expands the lore in a horribly wonderful horror way. The tunnel sequence makes you not want to be a spelunker for sure.

well, i guess you had a nightmare, not sleep paralysis in question Because in sleep paralysis, if you manage to drop your foot, if you manage to move a bit, just a bit, your body wakes up in a couple of seconds due to shock. What you described was a nightmare more likely. I've had plenty of sleep paralysis, where i would go to sleep, wake up paralyzed, FINNNALLY get myself out of the being stuck and unable to move on your side phase (yes, it absolutely feels like being stuck in a cave) and then i think "Shit, i still wanna sleep a bit" then it happens again, afterwards i still think "Shit, i still could catch some Z's" but this time i place my leg near the bed so only a teeny tiny push is enough to drop it It works, and it works wonders, but if that happens again i don't go to sleep anymore no matter HOW tired i feel...

that tunnel sequence at the end where Nick got stuck in the tunnel was GOLD. oh my goodness where do I start? first off, the cockiness you feel since you had gotten out before, it should work this time, that's how the game fools you and that is actually how a lot of cavers get stuck and die, they try to fit into areas they can never get out of. Then the silence for a few moments before the dialogue... this is what panic is. horror media portrays panic as this- sudden gripping horror but panic is actually your mind and body settling into the realization... that it is stuck. in this case in a cave. it takes a while to settle because... we got out before, we should be able to do it again. and as you struggle and angle your body in any way you can, once you've tried everything, panic starts to settle. at first you're not completely sure, your mind is buzzing in shock "help?" you look around the cave... perhaps you feel comfortable for even a moment despite the pain of your leg being trapped "help..." then fear finally manifests, mixing with the confusion and shock, only now do you start to panic, in the total realization you're stuck and there's no leaving this place "help!" the person who made this game knows exactly how fear, panic, excitement, dread and more manifests. as well as how exactly relief and desperation works. Nick was a pretty big shot acting guy at the beginning but even the largest of personalities crumble under reality. when the person showed up in the tunnels... you could feel the rush nick felt. relief mixed with adrenaline and excitement... it makes even the strongest of personalities submit like a dog. it's a drug that makes your head buzz and the developer knew what that feeling was. I think that's why this game works so well as a horror game. because instead of developing horror it develops terror. but a very specific kind of terror. a terror developed from a horrible comfort of the tunnel of which turned into a hatred, because you learn you can no longer be afraid of it. and a terror developed from the excitement of finally getting help... and you as the player watching the character of the game lose himself fully when help finally arrived. Nick can no longer realize he's lost himself and that's why it's a horror game, because if any of us were in that situation... we would also lose our minds. This is a horror game not about the claustrophobia of the caves, the monster within, nor is it about the spirits or the fear of getting crushed.... the true horror of this game is losing the ability to think. because if you can't think.... you can't actually fear.... anyway these are my passionate yet incoherent rambles of this game. it's a genuinely good game though lol I just had to get my ideas down somewhere and share them just because of how exciting it is to see a horror game that actually perfectly plays on the dynamic of panic. hope everyone is having a good day lol.

This hole was made for me! This inspired me to go back and read about the Nutty Putty cave disaster. If you're not familiar, its where some dude on Thanksgiving day crawled into one of these holes for fun, got lost, and then stuck. A rescue team tried to pull him out but he was in a corkscrew of rock 18 inches in diameter where they only had access to his feet (and someone had to shimmy down like a worm to even get to that.) They tied rope to him and used a system of pulleys to try to get enough leverage but couldn't overcome the friction. His body swelled from being upside down and he passed away from the blood collecting in his head. Your circulatory system doesn't pump blood that way. Surprisingly, you only have about 12 hours of upside down time before you die. They sealed the cave off and made it his grave. Interestingly, the cave had been sealed twice before because of people getting stuck in it. They had just reopened 6 months prior before the most recent disaster happened. I call it a disaster but stop and think for a moment about the hubris required to think that you should go do this for fun in a cave that's literally been shut down until recently for this very problem. He was not a dumb man. He was a medical student with a wife who was pregnant with his second child. His extended family went with him that day. They all thought it would be fine. They were also very Mormon and at one point he even chided his rescuer from falling away from the LDS church. While stuck in a hole. Upside down. Yep. Hubris.

His tale is a moral story, don't do stupid dangerous things ESPECIALLY when you've got people waiting at home.

Always good when a horror game has the 'Common Sense' option. Namely where you see bad shit, and just go "Nope!" and leave. Still, beyond that, I get the feeling horror movie and game protagonists have a remarkable lack of self preservation sometimes. Find a horror house filled with dismember bodies? Keep going. Find a creepy cave? Yep, keep going. Stupidly tight squeeze where there's a risk to get stuck? Ha ha.. keep going

I love how we actually never got to see the monster (which is not the original one, no, the original one came from a woman so it's some sort of parasite. I really enjoyed both games in this series! Makes me feel kinda bad for the protag in the last game, finding out that it was probably a human at one point who got lost down there. I wonder if the body of the human woman who the monster said it came out of was actually its former human body? Or it could be the product of the monster before it having "children" the same way it did with Marie, larva growing inside the corpse. Side note, but the part where you have to crawl through the caves like a worm is giving me flashbacks to this one interactive fiction game I played years ago. It's about a guy who woke up with insomnia in the middle of the night and then slowly went through this lovecraftian transformation and turned into a worm creature. He ends up trapped on a spaceship with these other alien grubs and throughout the whole thing he's been starving so he attacks and eats them. Then it cuts back to reality. Turns out he was hallucinating and it's actually a naked human man writhing around on the floor like a worm, and the "grubs" he ate were his two young children... Something about the description of him covered in blood and slithering around has always stuck with me, it's so disturbing and sad.

This game reminds me of Junji Ito's "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" and the creepy-pasta story "Ted the Caver". The game does a great job of giving the player a sense of Claustauphobia and the "urge to keep going" even if the situation is dire, but avoidable. When the protagonist mentioned the cave was getting narrower, but couldn't go back, it reminded me of "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" characters. If I also recall, "The Horror Of Salazar House" did the same thing for one of its endings with its protagonist. Yeesh... games that make great uses of phobias and environments make me shudder. However, Manly always does a spectacular job of keeping things calm with his deep, soothing voice :).

It's all fun and games till someone drinks the dumb juice! Seriously though, the way this character is written, it makes one wonder about real people like this, who love to live "on the edge." When they finally get to a point where they know they've gone too far or are about to die -- such as those who fall off tall buildings while doing parcour -- do they have the same breakdown and acknowledgement that they screwed up? There are always thrill-chasers and, likewise, no shortage of videos online showing their injuries and even demise. Just how many had similar thoughts to this character, when his leg was stuck?
