I'm only 47 seconds in but I want to give Mr. Tate his props. His character went from a bright-eyed, smiling, nice, simple guy/kid to an angry, damaged, frustrated, desperate man. Mr. Tate acting was so good because even the look in his eyes were different when he gets back from the war. He was truly a completely different person. Great movie.

You know, there was one concussion expert who was talking about Power Slap, a slap fighting promotion created by Dana White, the president of the UFC. This term is thrown around a lot but watching this movie made me realize Larenz Tate has range. He went from playing a psychopath to a nurturing, but naive boy, to a man coming back from war that has not only affected him, but those around him like his friends and the mother of his kids. This movie is so dark, yet so good… a better step up from their first film (even though I love Menace II society).

My uncle joe got captured but they let him go and told him "its not your fight" my grandpa said the same. Uncle joe said that some of the black soilders that returned came up "missing" under the US suspension that black soilders were "spies" for the Vietnamese bc they couldn't understand why the Vietnamese wouldn't kill the black soilders the same way they did white ones 🤷🏽‍♀️

Dead Presidents is one of my favorite movies. This movie hits differently for me as an adult & being retired military. Anthony should have gotten with Delilah instead of Juanita. The reason he joined the Marines was because the two men in his life his dad & Kirby fought in the war. He shouldn’t have gotten Delilah, Joe & Cleon involved with the heist. I wanted him to get revenge on Cutty the same way he got revenge on Cowboy. When i saw Cutty pull up i said there goes the happy ending. Fun Facts: Larenz Tate & Clifton Powell were also in Menace II Society, the short lived sitcom South Central, Why Do Fools Fall In Love & Ray. Larenz Tate & Isaiah Washington were also in Love Jones, Bokeem Woodbine & Clifton Powell were also in Caught Up & Ray, Bokeem Woodbine & Isiah Washington were also in Strapped & Crooklyn, Jennifer Lewis & Clifton Powell were also in The Brothers, Jennifer Lewis & Isiah Washington were also in Girl 6 & Larenz Tate & Terrance Howard were also in Biker Boyz, Ray & Crash. On another channel, they said that the significance on the end song of "walk on by" was saying that Anthony should've just walked on by instead on talking to Skip. As well as he should've just walked on by Kirby and his place and maybe things would've been better. Had he just gone home and talked to his parents, I'm sure his dad would've helped him get a job, especially for the baby. Anthony couldn't let the past go and it took his life down a dark turn.

- "Why do black people have to have their own awards?" Because our work is never recognized by the mainstream, that's way. This was a film of Oscar caliber and I don't even know anybody white who has HEARD of it. - Chris Tucker kept more millennials off drugs than Nancy Reagan and D.A.R.E. ever did. The scream I scroam when they showed him with those Storm/X-Men eyes, I swear... - Top five GOAT soundtracks, hands down. Interesting note: the judge at the end is screen legend Martin Sheen in an uncredited role. How dope is that!?

Hood classic indeed!! Absolutely love Larenz, Chris and Keith! Cleon (Bokeem Woodbine) was definitely batchit crazy and not too bright at the end. Also, Anthony should’ve gotten the sleaze ball sticker as well. And anytime Jenifer Lewis is playing the mom in a movie, it’s gonna be lit. He shouldn’t have gotten upset with Juanita moving on (somewhat) because he didn’t seem to care. Delilah should’ve looked the other way after seeing how he treated her sister. Not sure what made her think that things would be different. Just a lot of poor decisions made by the cast. And the judge showed absolutely no mercy. He was like, “I served too but I didn’t do any dumb chit to get locked up or anything risky to cut my future short” (paraphrasing of course). I am late but I watched this movie for the first time about two years ago. I know, I know. I enjoyed your commentary as always! How about adding another military based movie to your list which is another classic: Major Payne! And what happened to the hint sis??

Hi. I don't think Anthony had anger issues after the war. He had experienced a lot of traumatic events and death. His anger in instances where he lost his temper was with merit. Anthony needed a good-paying job and therapy. Where was the support for black soldiers and their families? While I understand your viewpoint on Anthony attending college, it may not have been the better choice for him. I assume he may have been average in H.S. The thought of pursuing higher education may have been overwhelming to him. Black children who've grown up in disadvantaged neighborhoods aren't exposed to different places, people, and cultures. War is war. But look at the conditions he grew up in. He was raised in a two-parent household with good morals and values. That didn't change the harsh conditions that existed outside his home. As Judge Greg Mathis says, "You had to make do."

15:06 Not to mention, in Ashanti’s “Rain On Me” video, this song was sampled, they recreated this scene (to some degree) and Lorenz Tate played her jealous, abusive, cheating boyfriend

Such a great movie. Also, I found it an interesting take on showing how Vietnam affected young black soldiers. (Da 5 Bloods is also a great movie) We usually only see this conflict through predominantly white movies like Apocalypse Now, Platoon, etc.

i love Dead Presidents and had watched it multiple times in the 90s, but i can't really enjoy it as an adult, and this review reminds me why. A movie about a life being willfully wasted. Despite the brilliant photography, top-tier casting and incredible acting, It's just too sad. TOO sad. The ending makes me want to cry every time. As usual, i very much enjoyed this review.. You're commentary it so much fun and your voice is very pleasant. RU-vid keeps recommending other review channels, but honestly, i'm not even interested.

Also hearing you say “mayne” like Terrence Howard made me chuckle not gonna lie 😂😂😂 which reminds me, you have to cover Hustle and Flow because the movie is based on Memphis so I know you’ll have a field day with that 😂😂

* There is no distinction between the timeline of when they robbed and the time they got busted, so it appear they stayed in the city for more than a week (I guess), but it never says how long. * Anthony told Kirby that he's going to talk to Cleon, but even though it's never said, Anthony is going to kill him. Anthony just wants to know what else Cleon has said or done. However, Kirby ain't got time for talking and was just going to kill him. * Had Cleo been on point during the robbery, the girl would not have had to put herself in harms way to save Anthony.

Anthony made a litany of bad choices that brought down not only himself but those who loved him. He was an idealist drive by nativete ( we've all been there) he was his own worse enemy. He could have written to Juanita telling her what his life was like over there to give her a better understanding but he didn't. I don't think he cared about her at all. He pretty much told her that after getting with her. His broken thought process of what a man is is why his development remained arrested. I think he was her first and she felt more about him because of it. She did move on with Cutty but he wasnt who she wanted. He was who she needed there's a big difference between the two. New viewer and I just subscribed. I'm looking forward to more engaging content. All the best.

It's crazy how I watched this as a kid, not knowing I would have similar experiences as Anthony later in the Army. The battles, knowing soldiers who kept body parts for luck, some KIA b/c of fear & most engaging in drug use during war. I returned home injured to spend years fighting for my full pension.
