To be honest, I feel like that Ricky was just a spoiled child where he just did what he wanted and yet his mom was still 10 toes down for him while looked at doughboy as the failure and I think that’s honestly unfair because Ricky wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed yet doughboy was looked at as basically the problem, Child am I honest opinion you were right if doughboy had the same guidance as Trey did, he probably would’ve thrived but instead he had a problematic mother, which honestly is common these days, where sometimes the parent will favor one child instead of the other but Trey still saw him as still being a good person, even though when others didn’t think that he was

Rewatching this movie as an adult & i’ve come to the realization that Ricky wasn’t street smart. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid of having sex, he was shook when they were in Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they were after him. If Ricky would have gone to the store when he was asked to instead of trying to pass buck off to Doughboy the outcome may have been different. Fun Fact: Little Ricky was played by Dovonan Mccrary. He’s the younger brother of Darius Mccrary (Eddie Winslow from Family Matters.

Despite growing up in the same house, Ricky was always sheltered from the dangers around them particularly by dough boy. I think that’s why he didn’t take the danger as seriously as he should’ve because since he was a kid it always worked out in the end (without acknowledging that this usually happened because of his brother).

@niabelizaire3596
@niabelizaire3596 9 месяцев назад
In spite of Doughboy envying the love and attention that Ricky receives from their mother, Doughboy was very protective of his brother as evident when they were little, Doughboy fought those older guys after they took Ricky’s football because not only was he aware how much Ricky loved that ball, but it was also given to him by his father and Doughboy knew that Ricky would wind up in hot water with Brenda and the latter would’ve most likely blamed Doughboy for Ricky losing his ball. Another example is when they were teenagers and Doughboy came to Ricky’s defense after a Blood member (the same one along with the other Bloods that ended up killing Ricky) deliberately bumped into Ricky because he assumed he was a Crip. Even after they fought, Doughboy noticed the Bloods driving by and quickly went to look for Ricky, only to later find his baby brother’s lifeless corpse. Ricky didn’t always appreciate Doughboy, and Doughboy often threw jabs. It’s heartbreaking because their fight was the last time they saw or spoken to each other 💔

My heart really went to doughboy and my disappointment went to his mom Brenda. I like to think if Brenda gave him just an ounce of love maybe his life wouldn’t have been so rough: In and out of jail, becoming a gang member and then dying. When we meet both characters for the first time she’s belittling him. It’s not like he asked to be there. Plus the favoritism is sickening. @@MASTEROFEVIL a weight bench should be the primary thing that a man should have in his home especially when he's raising a son! One of the main lessons you teach your son as a father is to be ready for the world physically as well as intellectually! More fathers need to have weight benches and a collection of books in the home rather than just televisions and gaming consoles! We need to be focused more on watching the news rather than reality television We need to raise our children to be mentally and physically fit! I see too many children in a world of obesity and inactivity who can barely read and way too many grown black men who are overweight and out of shape because they don't have fitness equipment in the home and they're dying in their 30s! A great deal of this stuff would stop if more men would focus on working out for two hours a day and eating the right foods! Don't get me wrong I enjoy a little bit of bourbon and whiskey every now and again but that's all-in moderation! We need to do better as a community.

At one point in the film, while talking to Chris and Monster, Dooky revealed that the reason why Brenda praises Ricky and belittles Doughboy was because they both had different fathers. It’s possible that Doughboy’s father resembled his son not just in looks, but in the lifestyle that he lived in (the gangster life, something that Brenda didn’t approve of) hence why Brenda treated Doughboy the way that she did whereas Ricky’s father wasn’t in the streets and was a decent guy. Both Brenda and that self hating cop were the true pieces of garbage in that film. Especially within the case of Brenda being a mother who favors one son while putting down the other. Favoritism is truly an ugly thing to practice. If she didn't like the Doughboy's papa, keep that energy for him and him only. Not Doughboy. Now she has to live with the thought of losing two sons. Ricky himself should be more grateful to have a brother like Dough instead of being a dick to him moments before he lost his life. As always I'm glad that you picked this movie to review which was a true hood classic. In fact I remember watching the vhs tape for this movie where John Singleton was giving a public announcement type of message about the consequences of living a very foul lifestyle before the beginning of the movie. Those are one of the things I miss about living in the 90s. Great times indeed. Speaking of the clue, it's Menace II Society. I can't wait to see that. You should check out either Showgirls(1995) which talks about evil, shady elements of competing for the spot of being a top star in a Las Vegas show and 187(1997), that movie where Samuel L. Jackson played a high school teacher suffering from PTSD. That movie also showed how teachers truly don't get enough respect as they should and fun fact, a teacher wrote the film.

As much as I love this movie, it’s hard to watch as an adult knowing that Brenda emotionally neglected Doughboy (also verbally abused him too). Her favoritism towards Rickey didn’t save him nor Doughboy. This movie and Poetic Justice are in a cinematic universe I’m convinced. It’s a full circle moment for both Regina King and Angela Bassett since they starred in the same movie again, that time playing sisters (How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Hopefully you can review that movie in the future ❤️❤️❤️).

She should’ve had the skeeza or maybe a toxic sticker. Unrelated but Snowfall’s last episode paid homage to Boyz in the Hood which ties together so perfectly! Even though Doughboy didn’t mistreat his mom, I noticed how his mistreatment of other women is basically a byproduct of how his mom treated him. Furious was the father that a lot of the kids needed. He was Hotep before the woke culture became popular. Sad enough how many good movies continue to prove that violence begets violence. That "stomach just sour" line killed🤣 but a few things to point out that were overlooked is the guy the who bumped Ricky was named Ferris the Monster guy (big dude in the sunglasses) is part of Ice Cube crew, he bumped Ricky, almost hit Tre with his car and generally antagonized them because he was from crenshaw mafia and Ice Cube and his friends were Rollin 60s also it was pointed out to me when I older was that the reason their mother got mad at Doughboy and assumed he had something to do with Ricky's death was apparently the mother was always aware of his drug/gang ties and assumed his brother was killed in retaliation because of something he'd done but it doesn't excuse her constant criticism of him throughout his short life and had she not always been so hard on him and behaved differently herself she would've had a friend in Furious who could've helped guide both of sons especially Doughboy in the right path because like you said he wasn't stingy with his knowledge and was willing to share it with anyone who'd listen
@niabelizaire3596
@niabelizaire3596 6 месяцев назад
It wasn’t even Doughboy’s fault that Ricky got killed and it pissed me off that Brenda blamed Doughboy for his brother’s death. Brenda only assumed that Doughboy was in cahoots with Ricky’s murder due to his affiliation with the Crips, and due to both of her children getting in a physical altercation prior to the murder. Instead of jumping to conclusions, Brenda should’ve asked questions, hell Tre witnessed Ricky’s shooting and knows who pulled the trigger, she could’ve asked him. When Doughboy saw Ferris and crew rolling around the block, he knew Tre and Ricky were in trouble, hence why he grabbed his piece and rolled up with Dooky, Chris and Monster to protect his brother and best friend. Unlike Doughboy and Ricky, Tre had a paternal figure in his life, Furious (who was strict, yet attentive and caring to his son). Without a male role model, Tre would’ve ended up like Doughboy and had Doughboy not grow up fatherless, he would’ve been a scholar like Tre. If Brenda had treated Doughboy with respect and gave him some guidance and affection, he wouldn’t have winded up as a statistic and she wouldn’t have been a childless woman by the end of the film.

Great movie and deep dive, I see some comments about Doughboy's Mom (true she added so damage to him raising and plus she's traumatized by whatever Dough's father did) but in reality it's his father leaving them in a fatherless home. Dough got the brutal mental anguish from his mom but never realized SHE was left to raised her sons alone! Singleton drove it home with this movie and that a boy needs his father to teach him how to be a man in this crazy world.

I agree that the deadbeat fathers should be held accountable, however we all know that women would always take the blame. "should have chose better" (refer to comment above). BUT! That still gives his mother NO excuse for why she treated him that way. Just because his father wasn't sh*t doesn't mean you treat your son like he ain't sh*t too. The actions of his father aren't his fault. He is still your child, and as a mother, she had the responsibility to show him the same love and care that she gave to Ricky. Imagine being a child and being raised by a mother who resents you but shows unconditional love to your brother.

The whole reason why Ricky dies is such a seemingly stupid but sad reason. The movie takes place in 84, and in Cali during the 80s (well since the 70s), there's been a rival between two gangs, The Rollin' 60'S Crips and the Crenshaw Mafia Bloods. During the scene at the street party, you'll notice that Ricky's wearing a **BLUE** LETTERMAN JACKET. While we know that ofc, he's wearing his school uniform jacket, the other guys who are Bloods, notice it and falsely assume he was a part of the 60s Crips. I truly believe this issue could've been stop had it not been for Dough flashing his piece, and not resulted in Ricky's death. However, if they were truly gunning for Dough they would've got him, or if they were just coming for the group, Tre mostly likely would've gotten killed too. It's all because of a stupid blue jacket that leads Ricky to be the victim of gang violence.

In college I did a movie character analysis on this and decided choosing “Tre”(Cuba Gooding He’s Character), but while watching, I soon realized how more interesting Dough Boy’s character is and the conflict between him and his mother during the film. I feel like a lot of people that watch movies tend to overshadow these type of things because they are more focused on the main character’s “story”. In this movie, I really didn’t find Tre’s character interesting at all. I understand that he’s supposed to be the more “woke” friend, but honestly his character didn’t really show too many moments where he was “woke” at all.

Thank you for bringing us this review. This movie is the quintessential hood classic. This was the first coming of age movie i first saw this in theaters at the age of 10 years old while i was visiting family in Fresno, California. Rewatching this as an adult i realize that Ricky wasn’t street smart due to him being coddled by his mother. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid to have sex, he was scared when Furious took them to Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they coming for him. Brenda favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did & Brenda lost both of her sons as a result of her favoritism. The scene when the self hating crusty lip ass cop pull the gun on Trey gave me chills. Of course the scene when Ricky was killed & when Doughboy avenged Ricky’s death gave me chills as well. Fun Facts: Will Smith was offered the role of Trey but declined due to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Tyrin Turner auditioned for the role of Trey. He said he did the scene when Trey was punching the air & he learned that in Hollywood they tell you anything. They told him he got the role & he didn’t. Prior to this movie Tyra Ferrell was on the short lived show Pryor’s Place, she was also in New Edition’s My Secret video, School Daze & The Mighty Quinn. Cuba Gooding Jr. appeared on Amen & Coming To America. Little Ricky was played by Dovonan Mccrary, he’s the younger brother of Darius Mccrary (Eddie Winslow from Family Matters). The girl who called Doughboy a bitch was in Ice Cube’s Today Was A Good Day video. Sad facts: A lot of the cast have passed away such as Jessie Ferguson the self hating cop, Derick Gobert, the dude who sucked on the pacifier, he was killed by a rival gang at a car race, Lexie Bigham, the dude eho who gave Ricky his football back died in a car accident, Lloyd Avery II, the dude who killed Ricky. He was murdered in prison. He left the suburbs to gang bang. He begin living out the roles he portrayed & Whitman Mayo (Grady from Sanford & Son). Next week’s review is another one of my favorite movies & a hood classic Menace II Society. Can we please get reviews on the following movies: Cooley High New Jack City South Central Fresh New Jersey Drive Roll Bounce ATL Dope

I love this film, it is a timeless classic. I have some thoughts about Ricky and the mother. How is Ricky a golden child, but he is a teen dad? I wanted to know the mother's reaction to that because, had that been Doughboy, she would have kicked him out of the house and not raise her grandchild. At least Doughboy had some sense to not get any woman pregnant. How is Ricky's father any different from Doughboy's father? They are both deadbeat dads, so why doesn't she emotionally abuse Ricky and Doughboy? Movie Recommendations: 1. Dangerous Minds 2. How Stella Got Her Groove Back 3. She's All That 4. Menace 2 Society 5. Above the Rim

I always assumed that Ricky’s dad must have got killed and was obviously a football player as well because Ricky always kept that football close to him as a kid. I think Doughboy dad left her which is why she was so bitter towards him but I could be wrong

The golden child can never do ANY wrong. I have both the scapegoat and golden child in my family. The golden child sometimes or most times have very little structure. The scapegoat gets the complete opposite. The golden child gets their way almost all the time. It happens in some narcissistic family structures.

Monster is Doughboy's top dog and the trigger man. Ferris is the coward blood driving through the set repeatedly.

You should probably check out a deleted scene, when furious styles had a conversation with doughboy. It’s a powerful scene that shouldn’t have been deleted.

1. Good goobily goop, Laurence was fine!!!! Was he always that fine!?!? 2. This hit one way as a kid, another way as an adult and a whole different way as a hood teacher. The sheer anger and language some of these younguns express towards reach other is so real. I *stay* chastising, redirecting and breaking up so many fights. 3. I also agree what Cube doesn't get enough credit for his acting here. It's easy to think that he was just being himself (as I did for years), but now I really see the depth in this role. Too bad he's a conservative nuthugger now... 4. For all the Ricky/Doughboy's mamas in the hood (and I've met a ton of 'em), there are many Revas and Furiouses as well - hard-working, well-meaning parents who want and expect the best out of their kids (though some of them are a bit delusional to their children's strengths/behavior). For all the talk about "no men" in the Black community, I meet and converse with plenty of Black dads, uncles, brothers, etc. Perhaps there's a dearth of cohabitating and/or traditional marriage, but coparenting is still alive and (somewhat) well. Fun fact: this is one of three films Angela and Laurence were in together. The 2nd was What's Love Got to Do with It and the the 3rd was Akeelah and the Bee.

I always thought Cuba was wrong for this part. For 1 he looks the same age as Lawrence Fishburn (about 36). And 2 he is not as fine as he is talked up in the movie.

Yeah apparently Cuba was only like a few years younger than Lawerence when they played father and son 😂

I remember when I first saw this movie too. I didn’t know what I was watching because I was younger, but when I watched it as an adult, the message behind this movie is a lot clearer. Crazy thing is, what happened in this movie is still going on today 30 years later. FYI, John Singleton was the mail man that gave Brenda Ricky’s test scores.

Omg notice how doughboy was also the most disrespectful to the women. Calling them b’s Ho’s and so on. I imagine it’s because of how his mother was so cruel to him, which then manifests into a hate for women in adulthood. His mother tore him to pieces growing up and this happens to a lot of black men. They grow up having a narcissistic mother and subconsciously translate that to hate for women. Or no real respect for women.
