Hearing Jake call himself the heel really makes me think. I find Jake is crucial part of why I come around to the channel. Give yourself the credit you deserve, Jake. You do so much! Same to all of you on the team. Most of what you guys do come through on my end and I appreciate it all!

A big part of it is that there a number of other "prank" channels that would go too far with it. Whatever the hell is happening with David Dobrick and nearly killing his friend or whatever, or people smashing phones comes to mind. It sucks that it happens but those comparisons are made and kind of make it easy to assume the worst since the worst has happened already and it gets millions of views

I think this whole time thing exemplifies a very valuable lesson in psychology. When I prepared for a voluntary service, I attended a couple seminars that coached us in dealing with difficult situations. One was in conflict de-escalation with trained cops, the other in dealing with misuse of power taught by ex-volunteers. After every de-escalation exercise the cops talked to the participants and told them specifically that it was an exercise. It felt redundant at the time but everything was fine. The ex-volunteer that did a ‚coercion to things I wouldn’t consent to‘ exercise with me didn’t do that. Even though I knew it was just an exercise, I kept feeling uneasy around him. What that videos controversy kinda boils down to for me is that the narrative went way too far without any resolution. It’s one thing to assume that Jake was actually okay with it, but I personally think there should’ve been a clip at the end of just Sam and Jake having a one on one, resolving the situation, acknowledging the morality of it all and Jake saying that he’s genuinely okay with it. Yes, it’d break the narrative, but I think it would’ve relieved a lot of tension. For you it might feel redundant, but even though I knew that the video wouldn’t be up if Jake was uncomfortable with it, I still felt very uneasy. You guys (and especially Sam) obviously didn’t deserve the backlash you received, but it’s a lesson to be learned ❤️
@jaredpoon5869
@jaredpoon5869 2 года назад
The situation really reminds me of the Carmichael incident where they took him on a high building with glass floors and sort of made of joke of his fear. I believe it took a comment from one of the Corridor members acknowledging the situation. I totally agree with your statement about the psychology. In part, I blame the RU-vid culture. It’s hard to sometimes know what is real and what is “real” for the camera. RU-vid has blurred that line to the extent that people want the assurance of fiction or reality because what is shown on the camera may not be an accurate reflection of reality. Maybe we’re 95% certain that this was planned in some way, but it’s that 5% that leaves a nagging sensation of unease.

Still a big Corridor fan, including Sam. I hope that everyone who had concerns about the AI voice video takes the time to watch this conversation. I'll be honest, despite intellectual awareness that it was a story, it was an uncomfortable watch when the team was watching the vid of Jake's AI voice. The early point here with the baggage around the word consent is bang on, and justified. Clearly the video in question didn't fully land as intended with the audience, but open conversation about it after the fact are a key part of the process and IMO demonstrates why Corridor is worth following.

Thanks for addressing the topic and explaining the behind-the-scenes of this video! I think the worst part for me was the crew chanting "consent" - not even because of sexual connotations (they weren't that strong for me, possibly because English is not my first language), but because of crowd pressure on one person and showing how a "fun situation" may quickly become very disturbing.

I think the interesting thing about the whole situation is that, just as Dean brought up, there is an explicit step for giving consent. If it was the same process as regular deepfakes, as in not needing consent, I think the reaction would have been much different even though they both are doing basically the same thing.

From a lot of the comments that I read, I don't think people mistook the video as a joke, as it clearly was a joke. It's more that people felt that it was a joke in somewhat poor taste. What really doesn't come across is the extent to which people are actually okay with something (as Jake was in this situation) and the extent that people feel pressured to agree to something. It's really easy to point to their friendship and their business as proof that, of course they were okay with it. It's also really easy to point to countless other videos where people were not okay with something but kept this discomfort behind the scenes. And it's not even about matters of sexual nature but about people feeling pressured to do something that they didn't want to do.

I wasn't following the comments with people freaking out and the fallout. But the video does introduce a very important topic and questions to ponder while being funny and entertaining. The rape/consent connection is just so absurd and over the top. I can't even believe this needed to be explained to people. This just feels like people are searching and digging for something to be upset about.

I appreciate the conversation and the channel. Everyone included. It's an agency-of-voice nesting doll in this project. The levels conflate because of the microcosmic nature of field/project/execution. The actual violation of consent in speaking as Jake in a legal sense as an exception, that can stand as shared growth. Your work doesn't need the extra juice of leaning-in to transgressing trust. It would diminish it. It's the edge of a "tell people when they're doing stunts" idea. It wasn't needed for Bat Man disappearing reactions. But, I don't like the thought of innovating a fight scene through a reveal that the punch is real and a real surprise. I like that you push limits and boundaries, and that it conscious of the bedrock of trust. Achievement with finesse. I am here because of how you explore and create with critical thinking and humanity. Keep up the curiosity-filled creativity and brilliance.

Thank you for covering this, I felt uneasy from the AI voice video, but this really explains it. I think the main issue for me was the perceived peer pressured consent, because it didn't feel scripted. Also nice context to hear about Beeple and Peter, I had still thought from that video that there was a bit of discontent between them. And I hope Sam is doing okay after reading those comments, it sucks reading mean things about yourself when it was all a misunderstanding.

I don't know if the Globant ads is AI but there's *something* off with it, or the voice artist is an absolute master. When you read in sci-fi about using voice harmonics to influence people... That's what the Globant ads sounds like. It's such a shift from "soft and sad" to "hard and confident" as the background volume quiets down... It's either superb ai with sliders, or master voice artist and master sound engineer. Or, of course... All three :) But it has a very "we have crunched a lot of numbers and this is the optimal way to worm our way into people's brains in six seconds so that when scandal X breaks people will think of us favourably" vibe to it. I mean it's worked, I'm here talking about it. But I wonder how many other people have no idea what or who Globant is but are reading this comment going "huh, sounds familiar, and sort of reassuring..."

Guys, thanks so much for having a public discussion about this topic (I know I'm late to the party, I don't have as much time for long podcasts anymore recently). I've been a fan of the channels ever since "The Last Minecart" (and Sam's been a big inspiration for me ever since he made the OST for "Prism" and through all his creative endeavors) so I like to think I'm pretty familiar with the shenanigans that are presented to RU-vid in each video, but I did feel uncomfortable with the story that was being told. Still, I know the story I would have told is not always going to be the story anyone else would have told, so I have not lost respect for you guys. (That said, if you guys could come up with more positive/constructive applications or story endings with this technology, that would be great, because so many take the Black Mirror approach of "what if technology went wrong/was used immorally", even though even a few Black Mirror episodes have a happy ending.)
@ProdigiaGames
@ProdigiaGames 2 года назад
I'm not entirely surprised that people freaked out about it, though I didn't consider it at the time. If anything, I saw the whole meeting segment of the video as a kind of Monty Python-esque over the top escalated situation. Though I am supportive of being sensitive to people's traumas and history, I do often have discussions with friends about the etymology and nuance of using terms that one group or another deems "problematic". Because it goes both ways...a topical example recently being the bill passed in Georgia where people can't seem to understand that discussions of sexual orientation are NOT the same as discussions about sex. But at the end of the day, as figures in the public eye, there will inevitably some time where someone takes umbrage with what you say... I'm not quite there yet, but fully expect that I will have plenty of opportunities to put my foot in my mouth when that time comes.

Concerning "The Button", I think you guys should not talk about it or promote it on the Corridor Crew channel (Cast should be fine), but rather let it into the wild and see if it gains independent traction. Also, concerning animations, there are some text/audio-to-facial animation AIs out there. I don't know if it will be effective or efficient, but it might be worth looking into. And I knew that there was absolutely no way that what we saw in the video with jake giving his consent was the end of that conversation. I also felt a bit put off by all of it, but that was the point of the narrative. the issue arises when people feel the need to justify their feelings by thinking that real people are at fault.

This is definitely a real-world issue. There are banks and other service providers that use voice verification - the easiest example is using 'Okay Google' to unlock your phone. We have seen issues with these services where you don't even need AI, people were just using recordings of the person saying the phrase. With this in mind, I do think that more (and more public) testing of these concepts needs to be done. This testing really should be done with the company's consent though. There are defined bug bounty programs and testing scopes that allow for responsible hacking or testing. Without abiding by those specific programs and agreements you can open yourself up to serious litigation, especially if it negatively impacts the company you're testing. Not that i think this is necessarily an issue here, but just a caution for aspiring ethical hackers.

People getting hightened emotions over words need to take a deep look inside to see what is actually wrong. I conform when it comes to discrimination but sexual, (not present) diseases and lifestyle language are fair game.

I think the important takeaway is that AI is terrifying in the wrong hands. Imagine the path of destruction one hacker could create by generating digital copies of people to incriminate. New laws are required to reel this eventuality in.

There's also a big problem where a lot of people have this hero complex. They feel the need to defend anyone and anything no matter how big or small just to feel like they are doing some sort of good. Problem is, their rationality goes out the window and they end up making a fuss over something that didn't warrant it. They take everything at face value and don't consider the nuances.

8 minutes in and their explanation so far is almost exactly what I assumed. Stuff was clearly hidden from Jake but exaggerated for laughs, as was the consent stuff. I get that it is a serious subject, but if we can not make light of serious issues what are we supposed to do. Comedy is a way to cope with reality. It doesn't mean you don't care.

I have a rather different opinion on it than a lot of people have. I see their points that this can be misunderstood, but the message you were giving is quite important. The morality of it is more important than you might think, because it shows quite well how easy it is to use software for malicious purposes. How easy it actually can be to ruin someone's life. In this case you need to give consent with your voice, but in other cases you basically just need to tick the box, which makes it very problematic. Imagine a 12 year old student who doesn't like his teacher for whatever reason. He secretly records him multiple times during lessons, feeds it into the programme, generates his voice, writes something untruthful what the teacher had never said and then goes to the headteacher to show him a fake video about him. I know that this is simplified and that a real scenario is more complicated, but the sheer possibility of creating something fake maliciously with that ease is definitely a problem. There are hundreds or even thousands of scenarios, where you could use this video for frauds and tricking people into something bad

i honestly just cant wait to see Jakes sponsorship intergration AI. i can just imagine his home office green screened behind a monty python looking cardboard cutout animation of Jakes body, with a deepfake of his head (angela anaconda vibes) talking about how the guys at manscapes wear vessi shoes whilst sprucing up their website on squarespace using B roll from storyblocks. It would be something to behold......before it gained sentience and destroyed us all by forcing us into clockwork orange type situations forcing us to watch sponsored ads all day.....but till then, YAY, AI JAKE!!

I've said it before, even on the Corridor Discord server, that being a huge fan shouldn't include thinking you're friends with a "celebrity" and can call them out and bug them IRL all the time. They have their own lives, this is work. They'll read comments if and when they have time, and respond if they feel like it. You're not privileged to replies or literally anything, no matter if you're a sub, patron, etc. They're not being rude if they don't reply to literally every comment. I get that you're a teen, you like a person online, but you still need to think about this. I personally left the server partly cause of the amount of people who were there just to get the crew's attention, nothing more. By any means necessary.

Definitely check out the AI voice imitation channel NileGreen. NileGreen is a parody channel of science communicator NileRed. They were in a podcast recently. He did it without NileRed's approval or knowledge. NileGreen said he was going to start imitating others too.

To me the video was pointing at something interesting, but I don't know if you had to make a disclaimer at the beginning of the video saying it was for comedy purpose or something like that. This podcast episode goes deeper into the discussion about the deepfakes so it s also an interesting episode. (Yes ! I knew you used the fake Jake voice in the brand integration!)

18:53 one of the problems with having the ability to mimic faces and voices, is always about using it for nefarious reasons. Example voice and face locks, completely useless. But also humans dont necessarily NEED those because a good voice artist can just SPEAK like a person, but saying that, anyone will the willpower and practice can mimic something. The AI programs just make it a lot easier. One of the things AI cant really replicate is peoples performance, you see that with movement, and text to speech, it just doesnt play well. For AI driven voices, i want to see a text to speech fed into one, then that filtered into another. Just to see how it tried to smooth out imperfections. Or if it gets worse.

could this be the start of actual AI built content? like, we have the voice capabilities now, are we far off of having an ai understand an environment that we create and have an AI control the characters in that environment as well as having written the script?

God I feel awful that people were saying that shit about Sam. Imagine making this great video and looking through comments thinking people would be saying how great it was only to see people calling you "rapey." I def never got those vibes and after the Charmichael heights video, I already knew that had Jake been upset, that video would have never been seen.
