There are many milestones in a hunter's life. But going deer hunting for the first time is one you'll always remember. Fen turned 10 this year which is the minimum age for hunting big game in Idaho. He's put in the time to pass hunter's ed and has a pocket full of tags. After spending some time shooting the rifle (7mm-08) we get up early and head to one of the neighboring farms to see if we can find any whitetails in the ag fields. I sometimes get comments from well meaning but naïve folks who think hunting is a cruel, antiquated activity motivated by bloodlust. But when you live close to the land as we do, hunting is a way of life. It's how we feed ourselves, with wild game, and stay grounded in the life and death struggles that happen all around us. In our house, we value self reliance.
