I head off from London, directly north on the first day of a Yorkshire motorcycle road trip. Packing as lightly as possible, I’m off to see how fun motorcycle touring can be in the winter.

This video has really impacted me, I’ve lost that get on and ride mentality. I get so droned in the normal day to day life and never just go on a small lightweight road trip. So in short, thank you Freddie for inspiring to get out more and see more of the UK and Europe.

*There's a Japanese RU-vidr, Ruriko_675, who explores her country on a regular basis (on a Hayabusa).* Britain is such a small country that I don't see why more folks there don't acquaint themselves with the island personally.

Great video. You're dead right about the fairing in cold weather. Last year I bought a BMW RT as a winter hack - it has been a revelation. £3,700 got me 110hp, electronically adjustable suspension, powered screen, cruise control, heated seats and grips plus all the luggage you'd ever need for a tour. It's not cool, it's not pretty but it is a damn good bike. With reference to your Tuesday videos - don't dream about bikes, dream about the ride and buy the bike that works for you. Dreaming about bikes leads to poor decisions and financial disaster. The RT is not for everyone but unless you only intend to travel to your local coffee shop, buy the bike you need, not the one you dream of.

Not sure many actually "get" the lifestyle and philospohical aapect of motorcycling as well as Freddy does. Its not necessarily about the specific bike, and its not about how fast - or otherwise - you can be. Its about the actually mode of transportation, how it makes you feel and how it encourages you to go. Anywhere, at any time.

I retired 5 years ago and the usual question was "what are you going to do". I'm gonna get a bike and ride all the roads in the Yorkshire dales. I'm still riding them and can never get enough (as long as it's dry). To see the change in seasons in Gods own country! I have been blessed. I started a "tour of mainland Britain" by nearest coastal roads but it is so boring. As they say if it's not in Yorkshire it's shite. I'll be watching where you go in my back garden. The roads have it all, why go anywhere else.

Your hotel reminds me a place I stayed at in Silverton, Colorado. It’s an old mining town and the place had been a brothel in the 1800s. Had a restaurant/bar/piano player vibe downstairs and the brothel rooms above had been renovated into a hotel. All 1800s vibes. I love these unique type places!

Great to see you heading up North on the Transalp, as a Yorkshiremen myself I'm pleased you decided to visit "God's Country' and experience some of the best biking roads in the UK, only observation on your overnight stop , as nice as Ilkley is you would probably have been better off travelling a little further North and heading in to the Dales via Ripon, it's a truly beautiful ride up through Masham, Leyburn and Hawes, however whichever route you take I'm sure you will have an awesome ride 😀

The jumping on a bike with wearing Jeans and coat and a bag strapped over the passenger seat does remind of how I'd go off somewhere in the 80's, but these days, do like a few creature comforts, big fairing, heated grips, heated seat and heated clothes and panniers, still the best winter tours are look at the weather, of it looks ok, throw a few bits in the panniers and go.

I love my southern home and city, but I’ll never forget I purchased a product from a guy on eBay. Anyway, traveled about 4 hours up to Blackburn and walked into the guys house and he was very friendly; offered me a ‘cuppa’ and chat if I wanted. He was a young property developer. I declined as I had to drive 4 hours back. Great guy. Love the bike Freddy. I like the change from your usual bike, but the Bonny is more your thing. I do think you need two bikes in your stable to make it a bit more spicy. Cheers

Hi Freddie I did a similar trip in reverse from Lincolnshire to London on my BMW R9T scrambler slightly less miles 178 (A15,A46,A1,A14 them M11) weather was dry 10deg but winds up to 40MPH no fairing reduced the speed to 50-60 mph this helped with the wind chill layered up for the trip left home at 6am in the dark. I was surprised by the single light on the bike how good it was. The trip took 5 hours including 2 stops 1 refuel & cup of tea second cup of tea & rest like you I thought I might have to put the wet gear on to keep the wind chill off but not required. As you know the stock mono shock on the R9T is not the best I hope to have this changed shortly so I'll let you know how that goes once I have changed it out, like you say when the weather is fine no excuse not to ride. sorry no footage. Thanks for your Bloggs keep up the good work Chris Just one question you do not seam to use body armour if you do what do you use I saw the blogs on this & to me it a must.

That bike looks very capable and economical. I would of liked to of seen it kitted out with panniers to show there carrying capacity.
