@FreddieDobbs The halfords charger is showing the charging volts, not the battery resting voltage. Also you need to get you neighbour to check the voltage when the bike is running (around 13-14v) otherwise it could go flat again. Also check it after leaving on the bike overnight, if flat then could be battery or something draining it. I would charge up the jump pack and take it with you until you know it's not going happen again..

As your neighbour has a multimeter, you could quickly and easily check for a parasitic draw on the battery. With the ignition off, disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Set the multimeter to read Amps. Then attach the positive probe from the multimeter to the negative battery cable and the negative probe to the negative terminal of the battery itself (so effectively the current is running through the meter). With the ignition still off, check the reading on the meter. Ideally, it should be virtually zero, probably around 2mA. If it's 50mA or more, then that would definitely drain the battery. I know it's not your problem as you're giving the bike back shortly, but it would be interesting to see if there was a problem.

@@FreddieDobbs your phone charger should NEVER be connected to the battery without the ignition switched on, and NEVER for more than 1 hour at a time! (and deserve as many flat batteries as they can afford!)
@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 5 месяцев назад
@@FreddieDobbs Sorry Freddie, when you say "everything checked" it's not very believable. Not al all. The fact that when the you plugged the charger in and it was showing 12.2 volts, you thought it meant the battery was 12.2 volts tells me you know even less than you think you do about batteries and charging. That was showing the charger output not the battery state. Ditto the 14V reading. Tell me when you say "everything checked" what do you actually mean? Did you test parasitic power draw? Either measured as resistance (Ohms) across the fuse supplying the Quadlock USB or current (Amps) at a battery terminal while disconnecting the Quadlock USB. From what everyone is saying that is a KNOWN problem with the Quadlock.
@nigelbaldwin752
@nigelbaldwin752 5 месяцев назад
If the battery is ok/healthy the voltage 'at rest' will be at least 12.7 volts. At rest means after it has settled after riding or being charged. (settling will take a good 30 minutes). When charging a discharged battery you will see the voltage rise as it charges, often to 14 volts or so, that is normal. The voltage isn't the whole story but I won't go into that. Great videos Freddie. life is an ever lasting learning experience I find.

When attempting to bump start: if you jump in the seat/bounce in the seat and release the clutch immediately after, then you have a higher chance of success. Your weight will drive the pistons down, helping the engine to turn over. Not suggesting that this would have worked 100%, but it is a more successful way of bumping a bike!

I think Freddie’s rock star presence has this affect on the bikes. They start blushing and pass out. More than likely though I suspect they play dead to avoid being dragged in swamps.

It was still a nice little drive round a pretty town. A cheep analog multi meter is handy thing to have. A circuit must have been live to draw battery down. Worthwhile checking connections in charging and starting system clean dry. If you have been out in a lot of rain. With a new bike something might just not have been tightened up right. Better luck with your next ride.

I couldn't believe that either! Doubt it's down to being a Honda, must just be a darn good battery, a miracle battery even! Any bike with a simple digital clock (which the NC750X has) will run a battery down over time. Three and a half years is a damn long time (30,660 hours to be exact). At around 10mA (for the clock), that's a total drain of a little over 30Ah over 3.5 years. A typical motorbike battery is between 12Ah and 20Ah, with the NC750X using a YTZ14S battery which is a very decent 20Ah... interesting how you could get 30Ah out of a 20Ah battery 🤔 Some years ago I found a 40 year old Villiers 250 trials bike in my local canal. Rusted to hell and covered in slime and silt, would you believe that the f'ing headlight was _still on!!!_ After 4 decades in the cut!!! 😂 Ok, lets make a deal, you reduce your 3.5 years to between 8 months and 1 year.....and I'll.... _switch the headlight off!_ 👍😂

Freddie, you remind me of my son he can break anything I often sing the Mothers Do Have Them theme when the next event occurs. Joking aside if the battery was down on voltage there might be another problem that is either draining the battery or preventing charge. Your videos are great entertainment and full of mixed content, not just about motorcycles.

When bump starting a bike its better to run alongside it and jump on the seat as you let the clutch out. That stops the rear wheel losing traction.

You will both love it i spent a number of great evening there with friend the owner and many more. Then further down the road on the A25 you got Godstone that has a fantastic history. I had the same problem on a new BMW 1150GS in 2003, it was a dead cell, the warranty replacement lasted until 2008, I then fitted an Odyssey battery which is still on the bike today after 16 years and 50,000 miles, It's no reflection on Honda or the bike it could happen to any make or model. On a positive note it's all usefull experience .

Shame you didn’t check the charging voltage on the bikes lcd after you got it going… would have been a good test to rule that out.

You need at least 12.5v to start a bike...especially a larger capacity twin or triple. If your battery reads below 12v, it's flat. You should have checked the voltage with the bike running, it should read between 13.5v and 14.5v depending on engine revs, anything outside this and you have a charging and/or battery problem.

That's very frustrating Freddie. Been there myself. As others have commented it was probably your quadlock usb cable drawing a small current. I fitted a relay to my bike to disconnect my usb cable when the ignition was off. The voltage shown on the dash will reflect that headlights etc are pulling down the voltage.

It happened with my Diavel V4, it states in handbook, no use for 30 days, put battery on trickle charge, mine had 10.5 v , no start. I had to spend on a external power bank to use charger, since battery removal is only done by dealer! apparently ! (no power points in garage), my 2002 CBR would start after months not running.

I see a lot of really uncalled for comments below. It is certain that Honda loaned you a bike with a bad battery. Modern bike batteries are good until they aren't - there is no warning, no gradual weakening. They are good until they are not good. That it worked for a couple of weeks before it went bad is irrelevant. Again, it's fortunate that it happened in your own garage and not out on the Yorkshire Dale or some other inconvenient place. I am very disappointed in the many posters below whose unfortunate comments speak volumes about themselves, but nothing about you. I look forward to your next video.

Technically you can only measure the Voltage of a battery accurately if it has been dormant (not charging or discharging) for 24 hrs approx. But in reality you will obtain a reasonably accurate result after 1/2 hours dormant.

Ground cable comes off first an gos on last. An I mean ground, not negative. They are usually the same thing, but not always. A positive ground car, you still need to take the ground off first an put it on last even though that is the positive on them. The point is to not have any connection from the battery to the metal body structure any time a wrench is touching opposing side of the battery.
