I chatted via email with Dick Gautier who played Batman in the 1973 PSA commercial a few years prior to his passing. He didn’t have much to say about it except joking that he fit the costume, hence the job was his!

Dave, the Lava ad was done by my former employer, the Leo Burnett ad agency. Although it was well before my time, imagine my delight years later when I found photoboards of the ad in an old file cabinet. Only from reading the dialogue it was easy to imagine the exact inflections without seeing the film. Thanks!

If the payoff to the Metro commercial doesn’t make sense, it’s because the tagline is uniquely British. Penguin was and still is a brand of chocolate covered biscuit/ cookie. The tagline for the Penguin commercials in the 70s and 80s often featuring penguins in amusing situation was “p-p-p pick up a penguin”. So the adopted tagline in that Batman related commercial “if you’ve got to ‘pick up a penguin’” is a clever player on the original. Penguins are very nice biscuits. Apologies for Britsplaining 😅
@SuperWolsey

And the fact we see Bats and Robin in a regular car here brings things full circle given how the 1943 and '49 serials have them in a regular car vs building the Batmobile
@pauld6967
@pauld6967 2 месяца назад
For a split second, when the Metro is mentioned, I thought they were going to use the Bat Cave's passageway to the subway system since many places refer to the subway as the Metro. I was definitely caught by surprise. That one and the final PSA are ones I had not seen before. Thanks for presenting them to us Dave.

Yvonne was already a “name” having done movies and television for several years. This was Burt’s first big thing. So it stands the reason that she would be paid more. not to mention they were trying to save the show from declining ratings by adding her.

There was also that animated PSA on Sesame Street about street crossing safety! I hate the Batman TV show. I also love it. Here's why. I love it because it was a hilarious spoof of Batman. But I hate it because much of America though this WAS Batman, instead of a parody of it. I blame Congress and the Comics Code Authority. Because Batman was a particularly dark character, dealing with evil criminals, the CCA dumbed the character down. The Joker was no longer evil; he was a clown who committed crimes. And so on. It made the character ripe for trivialized parody. And the Batman TV show did an amazing job of it. But if you want the "real" Batman, I encourage you to look at the two Batman movies starring Michael Keaton and the three starring Christian Bale. They better capture the "real" Batman more than anything else ever done.
