Fingers crossed for your redundo John - whatever happens, if you make RU-vid your "job", I predict you will have a much happier life and you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner....although it's highly likely you will be considerably poorer (at least that has been my experience, very happy but skint - I take happy over money any day of the week)......

For what it's worth, I took early retirement 6 years ago at the age of 60, having worked continuously for 43 years. I lifted my lump sum, seen places in the world with my wife that, otherwise, Id never have had the opportunity. I also changed the bike, changed the car, and paid-off my mortgage and a few other debts. Yes, I gave up a secure and reasonably well paid job 6+ years before I needed to, I have a lot less cash in the bank than 6 years ago, but do you know what, I've had an absolute blast!! So, in my opinion, if your company decides your role is 'surplus to requirement' and you've done your sums for day-to-day survival, take your redundancy and run. Good luck with it all.

I just did the same. Same work length but unfortunately not all the best paying until I landed a good job 20 years ago. It was a stressful job and I decided to retire before I would get a full pension but with my savings combined with the reduced pension I will have no problems. It is sad that retiring at 60 is considered early though.

Hey Chops I'm in my late 50's and grafted all my life for little recognition. I persuaded my old boss to let me do 4 days a week - I don't need the money & would rather spend more time out on the bike. Monday to Thursday is more hectic but the new boss gave me a pay rise because he thought I might leave! In my experience companies don't always reward 'the guy who gets things done' but on the other hand they won't let them go at redundancy time. Qualifications and certificates mean nothing if you can't get things done - don't put yourself down - this is why your boss chose to keep you. My advice is drop down to 3 days and see how it goes for a year - maybe in the future you could go back to 4 days?

I semi retired at 55 and have done things that I never thought I’d do, I’m now doing three days a week just to keep my hand in and was suddenly struck down with a heart issue at 60, after having major open heart surgery in January this year and on the road to recovery, I’d say go live it fella, cos you never know what’s round the corner! Best of luck with the future, loving all your content👌🏽👍🏽

I’ll give you another angle chops, if you think you’re getting past it in the IT job, imagine in a few years as a full time motorcycle RU-vidr ! What I mean is when you get to 59 like me and your stiff as *u*k and can’t get your legs bent enough on the pegs, or after an hour you’re rolling around with aches in every joint. Stay at home/in the office and keep the channel like it is. Good that is.

You won’t be made redundant: it’s too expensive! Last in, first out. And you said yourself, you’re delivering. Others aren’t. Also, we all hear the “we want you in the office so you can collaborate better”. It’s hogwash. More to do with propping up commercial real estate values that would otherwise crash.

Redundancy money only lasts so long. Don't ignore your expenses; mortgage , energy, insurance , day to day living etc. If you would be getting your pension as part of your comp. retirement then that would be best. And please stop referring to the H2 as a pension substitute. It cannot be. A pension would be a regular payment that you can depend upon, the H2 would just be a one off. Anyway, take care and best wishes for the future.

I worked in IT for 40 years...I was in Technical Support/projects. I know exactly what you mean regarding having to relearn job all the time....used to envy lawyers etc where all changed very slowly. At 58 there was restructure at work and I was offered redundancy.....would have been £70k. Just before accepted they obviously checked cost and withdrew offer 😢. I was gutted....eventually escaped at 61 with a bit of a bung but nowhere near £70k. Listening to you brought all back. Thing is all useless people who'd achieved nothing got the redundancy. Tread carefully 😊

I see alot of those high hedge rows right next to the roadway in England moto videos.....I assume they are planted on purpose. What do you do if you have a breakdown of cars/trucks? No road shoulders to pull over on? How do you plan any escape route in case of manuever emergency? Just pile into the bushes? Ohhh, you going thru a "rif", that's what it's called here in the US, "rif" - reduction in force. I've been through myself (as an older worker) and as a manager enforced rifs. It's a shi___ business to go through. Upper management (from the accounting side, of course) usually just gives you a number you have to get to as well as timing. HR gives you the guidelines of what to give riffed personnel. Typically it's 2 weeks pay for every year. We also have to give ins info on what we call "Cobras" - temporary ins coverage - 18 - 36 months. Based on your employer's ins coverage but there is no company help to pay so it's expensive. As a manager looking at your direct reports, and picking who goes and who stays ends up really being rather arbitrary and that's what makes it a lousy experience, playing with people's lives but what to do when business numbers won't support company targets for overhead?

“Should I stay, or should I go now? If I go, there will be trouble And if I stay, it will be double”😉 The Clash circa 1982. I put myself up for voluntary redundancy at the beginning of Covid. It was an extremely well paid position. I must say it really messed with my head for the first few months, what the hell have I done ! however as I mentally adjusted and learnt to live with a significantly reduced cut of my cloth I came to realise that it was an excellent decision. Work colleagues are constantly telling me how they wished they could have done it. I am genuinely happier now and sleep so much better. The final test was an invitation back after my industry had improved post Covid, Nope! really humbled by the invitation, alas just could not face going back despite the money. “Though I'm a poor boy, I can still be happy As long as I can feel free” Supertramp circa 1980’s

Regarding the Return to work requirement given your contract is office based make sure they wont force disciplinary action if you don’t comply. They could potentially get rid of you on that basis. Also should you drop to 3 days a week they’ll probably issue you with a new contract which could invalidate a redundancy payment on your previous 23 years service. It would be considered the same as changing jobs / company . Really check the small print and how you might be affected. Whilst you’re still employed use their resources to bring your technical certifications up to date. Then if the worst happens for whatever reason and you part company you’re still fully certified which means if push comes to shove you could always get another job if needed or do some freelance work. Also be aware if you have a pension regardless of work status you can withdraw a 25% tax free lump sum at the age of 55 years. Good luck!
@neilking1
@neilking1 4 месяца назад
As has already been mentioned, only £30k is tax free, you can reduce your tax burden by paying some of it into your pension, worth talking to a financial advisor to guide you. If you reduce your hours you may also want to investigate how this might impact redundancy amounts in the future, you might not be happy if it's reduced by 40%. Good luck and 🤞it works out for you.

I do get your saying there are people who do nothing and get paid. 20 years in the U.K. in architecture and I could not believe how it even exists as a profession. Well, giving uk’s housing market it’s not even a surprise but still. My severance package after they let me go (I did not want to go back to the office after 1.5 years working remotely for them) from last job after 10 years was a joke. My wife got more from her company after living (by herself) current job for better one after 2 years here in Korea - the law is completely different and if you get fired you get several years of salary based on how long you were with a company instead of weeks in the U.K. Sometimes going on your own makes way more sense given such conditions. I feel robbed of my life and money. 3 weeks instead of one is much better but it would not last for all that long mind you. You can always contract some job I guess as the it.

John, look at it this way, if it's meant to be then things will drop into place, a redundancy payout would give you the financial freedom to go for it full time, if that doesn't happen then a 3 day/week would also give you the chance to devote more time to the channel whilst maintaining an income from your job, either way it's a win win situation! Keep up the content, your always informative, unbiased & above all else.......entertaining, which is what keeps us tuning in! Best of luck mate!!

In my industry, when there's a round of redundancies they take out the useless sacks of shit and over-burden the good, hard workers with more work. You get things done, you don't cause any bother, reliable & a good worker - all great reasons for work to keep you!! Such a weird and unfair way of rewarding folk for being useless - so why be good at your job, a valued employee? Just do enough not to get a disciplinary, be a waste of space and you'll get to pick up a golden ticket.

Just as well you didn’t hand in your notice ahead of that announcement. The issue as you say is you’re too expensive to get rid of. There will be lots of shite politics and uncertainty going on. That’s before the extra workload that will be spread around from those who have left. I’d keep selling the 3 day work desire and maybe start being rude…. 😉 Doesn’t sound to me like you want to dedicate 100% of your time to the channel. Suck it and see with a 3 days a week asap as your next step to put your toe in the water. In the meantime pitch yourself to sponsors for a 2025 launch of the new full time Chopsie.

Hopefully you can find some middle ground where you can work your three days a week and keeping your job for at least a few years more but also at the same time, grow the channel as you want. Maybe try to grow the channel in stages but having a regular income also helps as well. Also, remember to think about the unforeseen things like the economy or injury, things of that nature. I would try my best to fine a middle ground,..just in case. I do hope your channel explodes and goes exactly how you want it to I thoroughly enjoy your videos I particularly like your shop videos they are very informative and I agree with everybody here, saying it’s not just what you’re doing but how you’re doing it, with your personality, with the way you bring things to the table and how you do things. I’ve seen your channel grow over the years and it has came along way from the first videos you did. It has already progressed leaps and bounds in the way you present and edit your videos. I live in Texas and they are a lot of people on RU-vid that do videos in and around my area. Most of them are boyish, childish frankly stupid, half the time, but your videos have a nice sense of humor, a little funny, lighthearted, but all professional, with a sense of taste and style, and I think that’s what most people enjoy the most about your videos and we hope that we don’t lose that type of personality that you bring to your videos.

If you go part-time in your current role the risk is they will expect 5 days work to be done in 3, you would also spend the 2 'off' days worrying about what you have to do in the other 3. I'd consider becoming a contractor (if your role is suited to that) then you could then take on contracts when it suits you and have time off between contracts. As a biker, working over the winter months and taking the summer off would be a great solution.

I don't know if you kindof maybe shot yourself in the foot with regard to the severance opportunity. If your manager/company is more on the capitalist side of things... why would they pay someone for an extra 60+ weeks if they think they'll leave by themselves in a little while and the comany pays nothing extra. I think one of the big reasons they would not lay you off in this current instance is because you were too expensive to let go, for 3 weeks per year.

Seems like faith has given you, your answer. As an American I can only cry at all the benefits you get even if being laid off. Hearing you get a severance that's tax free...unreal. Best of Luck and Cheers Chopsy!

Just a warning on the redundancies - a member of my family worked for Goodyear UK for decades and when the redundancy rounds started he put his name in the hat like you but because it would have cost them a lot they overlooked him. Of course their plan was always to ultimately close the plant and eventually when they did he was made redundant but on the minimum rather than the enhanced the first few rounds got. If you can take a 3x package I would jump at it because with that experience you wouldn't struggle to get another job even if it was at a lower wage. You would also have the chance to go for one closer to home and make it a bit easier on yourself so overall how much would you really be losing? Especially when you add a nice chunk of cash in. Just be warned that when they say there are no voulentaries its usually a sign they are intending on keeping everyone happy until the last ones out at which point they will give you the least they can.

Whatever happens next is down to fate. You've put things in place for things to change. Once confirmation is in place you'll know exactly what to do. Looking forward to seeing you as a full time RU-vidr! 😀 . Very best of luck to you. With your skills you'll do just great.

Good luck to you John... Life is far too short and if you get a possibility to follow those dreams you've got to have a good go at it.... You do a bloody good job with the reviews and videos so I Wish you all the best and good luck with it mate

having gone through multiple restructures at work, Im in the same position, been there ages and it would cost a lot to loose me. I reality they always get rid of the ones that cost far far less. regardless of how good they are or if they want to leave or not, Sadly it all comes down to numbers on a spread sheet. Good luck with it though :)

Your channel, is very interesting and engaging mate. I personally think, you have got the charisma and appeal to pull off a full time RU-vid business. I think you’ll be connected enough, to bring in a lot of interesting people into your videos to help with the content from time to time. Go for it dude.

I’m just heading out the door to Donington BSB, but I had to stop to comment on this. I haven’t always agreed with your opinions but I’ve always had respect and gotten more enjoyment from your channel than others. I’m slightly younger than you but in the same industry and have been through all this. I have massive sympathy for you and anyone going through this bullshit process with all the flowery words and phrases which simply amount to ‘redundancy’. Whatever happens I hope you get the result you want and I will continue watching whatever videos you put out there. All the best mate

Hey thanks chopsy for what you do together with mcn, 44 teeth, moto bob, bike world and the SA the bike show- its an amazing facility to watch a couple of hours each week of what you all produce ( oh adam rieman also different segments of the market) compare your thoughts... i love it and really value the entertainment/ information that fuels my passion for bikes too. All the best mate.

Never known anyone be so happy about the announcement of redundancies! :D I'm a similar age to you and they've just opened up VR where I work. I'd be very tempted as I've worked here a while, but don't have an opportunity like a very successful YT to fall back on. If I did - I'm sure I'd be straight on the list - so I can see why it's tempting. However it works out, we'll still be here supporting you however we can, on the proviso you continue to release such great content - so no "Lambchops Goes Fishing" (although that does sound hilarious!)....

Sounds like you would be better leaving and getting redundancy! However chances are they would make those that can't get in the office or the "deadwood" redundant first! If you "get the work done" why would they get rid of you? Also it would cost them more for "long termers" . Redundancy, or save for exit in future. Your vids/chats are always eagerly awaited, keep the vids coming however you decide to do them. Cheers Chops.👍

That 50/50 work / you tube balance would be perfect as it would not put too much pressure on you. Who knows, it might happen ? Like your personality and your duo with Greg, a good balance for me between Mcn sometimes a bit too serious and 44 teeth sometimes a bit too much. Must come with age and personal taste in bikes which are quite similar to yours and Greg's. Also I am French and 44 teeth can be sometimes difficult to get as a foreigner whereas you are always very clear and in a way more international. Love your channel more and more and that H2, do not sell it please, what a weapon !!!

Go on three days a week, cheaper to get rid in 2026! Redundancy pay is based on: your weekly pay before tax (gross pay) the years you've worked for your employer.

As my missus always says "There's no pressure like financial pressure". So as long as the maths all work out, then why the heck not. If there's any reliance on 'possibly maybe's' from motorcycle brands' marketing departments though, then personally I'd give it a lot of thought as, when the economy's tough - like it is at the minute - the first things to often get slashed are marketing budgets. Good luck sir and hopefully you'll get that redundancy!!

Chuck as much as you can into a SIPP and get a whole heap of tax relief going back 6 years. It'll set you up for later life. Don't go getting sacked, you'll mess up any chances of decent exit money.
