A Meditation on Gamzee Makara (Part 2 Part 3 Part 1 of an Analysis Series) 

I think I can describe Homestuck with this little analogy. Hussie made a skyscraper. A beautiful, breathtaking skyscraper. Then he knocked it all down into dust, just because he could, and it settled in the shape of a well-fortified sandcastle. No one knows why. That about sums it up.

I had always taken Rage as the ability to react to (usually really terrible things of) the reality at hand, and Hope as dreams of all the possibilities that could present themselves. The idea of Contrivance really builds upon that, because what causes a purer rage than realizing the inconsistencies inherent to the entire universe. if the dynamic that Light and Void plays upon is Importance, that would make Hope and Rage be Complete and Utter Bullshit, literally.

gamzee having the invincible plot armor is explained by him NEEDING to be alive for English to form isn't it? if gamzee dies english can't be formed and skaia bends over backwards to serve the Lord of time doesn't it?

Coming back to this I think it's more that Rage represents something very different: the explanation and exposition behind a plot. If Calliope's spiel about Bards inviting destruction of their aspect was true, Gamzee's powers would entail getting rid of plot contrivances in his favor, and making sure only explainable, realistic things can happen, something which more strongly resembles Eridan, a destroyer of Hope-even by the weird Dahni standards that most people use today. Plus, Hope seems be all about throwing out details itself, it being stated multiple times that "Hope is about believing in things hard enough that they get a little bit less fake." Gamzee's powers instead seem to come from the omittance of any explanation, or need for one, from what he does. And that extends to his mindset too, both pre- and post-breakdown. Gamzee's MiRaClEs are stated many times to be simply his label for something he doesn't want to know the inner workings of , saying that "kNoWiNg ShIt JuSt StEaLs Up AlL tHe FuCkIn MaGiC fRoM [HiS] mIrAcLeS lIkE a MoThErFuCkIn ThIeF." So really, despite how superficially similar the two are, he wasn't using Hope. He just didn't have any Rage. His breakdown only really marked a change in what he didn't have Rage for. Rage was never really explained in the comic, even in the weird, roundabout way that a lot of the other aspects are. And I think the fact that the only heroes of Rage in the story gain their power through the absence of the aspect it's kind of easy to figure out why. But we do get a lot of information on what it isn't. Enough to get-from my perspective-a surprisingly clear idea of it, actually. (pleasereadthis,ispentanhourtypingitout)

One of the saddest moments for me is when Aranea’s mind control wears off and he briefly becomes scared and in pain, of course, he proceeds to flip out but hey what can you do.

I don't know if you are coming back to this series, but while watching this I realized that the Rage players we have seen have strong connections to jujus. I think it is safe to say that the jujus are also complete bullshit. They don't have any real explanation other than they exist and they have bullshit powers. Maybe the main aspect that makes up jujus is rage.

I like how the way your parts have split up mirrors the way acts started doing that in act 5 of homestuck

Okay, I have numerous things to say about this video. First I will preface it by saying YOU FUCKING GENIUS! Everything you said makes perfect sense here, of course all of Gamzee's bullshit has to do with his Rage aspect, and how that affects the reader. I only wonder how that relates to Kurloz, since he is Prince of Rage, although we weren't allowed to see much of him so I wouldn't blame you if you couldn't find much from him to prove it. You have also sold me on the idea that each aspect has a metanarrative purpose in the story, showing what kind of arcs each character will go through. I just want to ask you, what are your opinions on there being other aspects besides the ones shown in the story? As the fact that the troll universe was supposedly created by a 48 player session (as evidenced by the fact that trolls have 48 signs in their horoscope) somewhat implies that there might be more than 12 aspects unless they double up in a session with more than 12 players. And while Hussie has never confirmed that there are more than 12 aspects, he has never outright denied it either. So what do you think, is there a possibility of there being other aspects? And what purpose do you think they would serve in a metanarrative sense if going by your theory that each aspect has some influence on the story as a whole.

i figured it out , later on after he gets the crowbar (that he took from a dream bubble like john took the ring) , Caliborn is talking to huss , and asks what is his planet , huss says "its earth" followed by "If you see one or more shitty old Statues of Liberty on any post-apocalyptic wasteland planet, that automatically means it was Earth all along, as a rule. " and now this one is the most important one "Earth has been through a lot. It was even relocated a couple times. YES. I BROUGHT IT WITH ME, I THINK. INTO THE GAME. Yes. But it was relocated once even before that." now what 2 times was earth relocated , when it came to the new session and when they made a new universe in act 7 , go to 6:35 , what do u see , thats right its the same water planet sent back using time shinanigains , and now wait a little ...... whats that ... is that a meteor , the same one that caliborn was raised on and right after it... ITS A FUCKING STATUE OF LIBERTY. now ur just like holy fuck , but the u realize that gamzee did reach god tier , however unlike the other trolls who thought of wings to belong to gods , what did gamzee believe in. fucking clowns . that's how he lived that long in the meteor , but he realized ppl wouldnt belive he reached god tier without wings so he made some himself that's why they have clown faces , but the would fall off.. so that's my theory

It seems like you are more upset about the Lord Jack wormhole than you should be, based on one simple fact: Lord English is an orchestrator. Jack's head wormholed NOT for "no reason", but because that is what Lord English wanted. It's a parallel to Doc Scratch's head exploding, among other things. Lord English is documented as having set the stage for his own arrival, and he would not exist without Gamzee being where he is, when he is - so he arranged events such that Gamzee, the crowbar, and the golden cuestaff, will be in the right place at the right time.

I've always believed that applying common sense to homestuck is a great way to have a bad time. Homestuck is a collection of characters who would have interesting conversations or dynamics if they ever met, and its events consist of any situation which will bring out a new or unexpected side of those characters when they interact. What comes in between to justify those interactions and that context really doesn't matter. It never mattered. The glue of Homestuck is not continuity. It's the reader's trope-savviness. Homestuck is the lampshading-est series ever written, and the first step to enjoying it is forgiving it for that.

Definitely my favorite video of yours. That crowbar segment made me grin like an idiot given my comment on a previous video. I feel short tangential videos like this could have their place on this channel too, it works really well. Edit: Also finding the homestuck style 'Part x part y part z' in your titles highly amusing.

if Doc Scratch is the cueball, and Lord English is the cue stick, then could Gamzee be the person holding the cue stick? Could he be channeling his rage into LE to destroy things, as well as set the stage so that the heroes of the story could defeat this evil and live happily ever after without a great deal of conflict?

Please continue making these, they are brilliant feats of meta-fictional analsis!

Great Video. Really amazing analysis on the meta-fictional aspects of Gamzee and how the frustrating bullshit has a narrative meaning. That said, Gamzee's still a frustrating character, because he doesn't have enough moments to characterize himself. Like post Act 5 he barely talks, and it's frustrating because I want to see him convey some desire to break reality or something of the like. And that's where the analysis vexes me. Because on the one hand, yes, this makes total sense in Homestuck's narrative and themes, he's an anomaly frustrating the story and the audience as the ultimate troll. On the other hand he feels like a crutch and feeds too far into HS's "what happened if I did this random thing!" and while impressive, is also tedious (and being intentionally tedious is still tedious). However, while all of that is subjective and my own ranting. Gamzee and Terezi's relationship was just bad. Like it was over a year of destructive abuse... that happened offscreen and couldn't really hit the viewer with how bad it was because we were only told. Then Gamzee finally get's off his ass and beats her up and it's horrifying and terrible... then the retcon happened and it's worthless, a worthless offscreen plot detour and a very not so good handling of abusive relationships. Again, I get the point, to have Terezi motivated to change the time stream... but it's still not pulled off very well imo.

I remember byb making a convincing argument explaining the headsplosion, tho' I read it many months ago and forgot the details. It was supposed to be highly symbolic of other pieces of the story, especially to another explosion or somehow relating to the green sun/black hole, though notably gamzee in his fridge passing through the wormhole is fairly reminiscent of Lord English and his sarcophagus, as well as him falling into the black hole.

Watching this a year later is somehow cathartic because you go the most in depth of any content creator on Homestuck that I know of and I kinda want to guess your classpects would be the Mage/Seer of Void seeing that you a line yourself with Void as you said in the last video on Void that you a line with it and Mage/Seer because they deal with knowledge and understanding Homestuck to this depth that you have to be one of the "knowledge" classes. And while hoping (that fucking pun lol) you do a part two to rage I would possibly request you do a video on the blood aspect of even the mind aspects because they are some of the most under developed aspects there are. And sorry for the long comment, but when it comes to Homestuck or things I'm passionate I get really wordy.

The thing is, I'm not sure that what Jack English creates is a wormhole, for one simple reason : While Caliborn, in his session, has Yaldabaoth as a Denizen (like Dirk, which has led many fans to assume that it's the same Denizen), Calliope has Echidna. If it were truly a wormhole, why would they have different Denizens ? Since the explosion eats more than half Dirk's planet, it's fairly normal to assume that Yaldabaoth got eaten as well. (AKA no reason for it to be a wormhole). We see the fridge before the explosion, but not after it. With his Rage, Gamzee could have Destroyed the chains, got out of the fridge, get the crowbar and re-hides in the fridge. Kaboom, the fridge is thrown away by the blast, towards Skaia. Skaia opens a defense portal that redirects him towards Earth before it was taken by Jade/Vriska, and will survive there, with the crowbar. Both of them are protected by Gamzee's plot armor.

Lord english has the abillity to keep people alive as long as he has a reason for it and gamzee's connection to english alows him to survive

I figured out last year the key to Rage's power. Then again, I am the Heir of Rage, so my growing into that helped a bit. Well I would be if they hurried up on that f$&%ing game!

I'm only adding this in case anyone reads it and finds it interesting or relevent (if it doesn't fit that's fine but I'll suggest it anyway) but I think the Rage aspect also represents violence. Not purely the idea of violence as a harmful physical action upon another (although this is relevent as well) but the idea of violence as a Force that removes Agency and Choice from a person. As explained in the PBS Idea channel's video "What Is Violence". Reading medium.com/@RoseOfNobility/apotheosis-and-creation-myth-2257d7bf5854 the writer says that they felt this violence is what LE commits upon the alpha timeline, making it so that the characters are constricted by the Alpha timeline and rid of any real free choice. I think this can be seen to be connected to Rage. Along with meaning of resignation and skeptism, it's related to the violence committed when agency and freewill is removed from someone (or something? The plot?) which is something that Gamzee both suffers from, and commits (after his 'realisation'). I'm not as analytical as the kinds of people that make these great theory and speculation posts, so maybe someone else can draw more meaning from this.

you have 413 subs as of me watching this video. also as awesome of an interpretation this is of everything about gamzee, you have to note that not everything regarding him is horseshit nonsense. we saw that gamzee used the music box time travel things to meet jane when he wasnt supposed to. but then again, how did he get those music boxes in the first place? presumably they were littered around the meteor which i guess brings me back to your point.

There's just something especially Homestuck about making a series about analyzing Homestuck, claiming that it will have 4 parts at the beginning, and then making Part 1, Part 2.1, Part 2.2, and Part 2.3.1, before finishing with a summary of what it was meant to be two years after any of the other relevant videos.

Rage is also a number of other things, including but not limited to Religous zealotry, tunnel-vision, and purpose.

This series is really good I'm actually kind of looking forward to when you get around to Doom, assuming you did Most because I personally find myself having a certain connection with the Doom aspect Maybe I should explain A couple years ago, I got linked to a god tier quiz. The result for me being "Seer of Doom". At first I was annoyed. The fuck does Seer of Doom even do? Why the fuck did I get stuck with this edgy as fuck title? Is this a joke? Why am I stuck along side Sollux, a character I have very little affection for. I wanted to be the fucking Knight of Breath But no, Seer of Doom. But as the years rolled by... Things started to click The main one being that I have been able to predict the deaths of three actual people with a certain level of accuracy (Being 3 out of 4 of my grandparents) The Seer of Doom... Doom doesn't just mean death. It means the end, the outcome of events. So, a Seer of Doom is "One who sees the Outcome of Events". Put simply on subconscious level... I'm that cheating fuck that skips to the end of the story before starting it to see where this all goes. Growing up more or less every toy or pass time I became attached to become very popular soon afterwards, with a notable example being Pokémon, the first game I ever played in my life, though I can't really even attempt to claim credit for that somehow on some metaphysical level. I am very good at picking the winning side of things, be it in terms of lifestyle, knowledge or ideological standpoint, though I have been proven wrong at times... nothing infalliable Spoilers don't bother me at all. I'll watch a lets play of a game all the way to the end and then go out and buy the game for myself, not caring that I know where it ends. I almost always know where things are going to go, or at least I am good at predicting To summarise my little diatribe... From the way I view it, Doom deals with outcomes... so I suppose that the Life aspect, as its opposite would deal in Beginnings. he got the crowbar from merloz Juju breakers Crowbar Juju breakers are extremely rare-to-non-existent items capable of destroying other jujus and negating their effects, most notably those of temporal artifacts on the current timeline. Only one juju breaker is currently known to exist, a crowbar serving as the signature item of, well, Crowbar. It was used on Eggs's timer, the Felt's safe, Doc Scratch's grandfather clock, and Lord English's god tier clock. Caliborn and B2 Jack Noir are each currently in possession of an instance of this item. It was given to both of them by Gamzee, who received it from Kurloz in a dream bubble. The fate of the original is not known, although it may have been rescued from the the destruction of the trolls' universe along with Spades Slick, the last person to use it. Gamzee later gave this to B2 Jack Noir via the Droll, and Jack apparently used it to pry out Lil Cal's eyeballs. Caliborn utilized this weapon to defeat Yaldabaoth.

I really hope you continue this series, its made me appreciate homestuck a lot more even through all of the flaws that got introduced in act 6.

I like to think after HS’s ending purple bloods are extinct they are in my mind 9/10 evil zealots whose main purpose is to fulfill the legacy for the main villains. Purple sea dwellers too where 9/10 if u are to role as a purple blooded troll in any regard u have to be evil. They act as carny fodder gamzee is prophet for clowns he is a bard and rage that matches his purple blood and clown roots he has more of a important role then any other purple blood should probably ever have but if u ask me they all have plot armor until they’re prophecy has been fulfilled n are really hard to kill 9/10 will be ostracized from the group for being shady devils of the sort but after all that u understand why equius fears him he is a bit like whistles for HS. N when u dip into other pieces of hussies work caliborn is a lord of time I think that enables him to have control over the story at any point even go back to PS era I feel his meddling in a lot of things outside of act 6 his drawings are earily like PS if u look in the extras problem sleuth creates the hammer of zillywho in that I think is the closest bases in reality to why and how he can get a hammer of zillywho other then he’s a bard and rage players are like the tanks of HS ontop of bard there can only be 1 bard per session if u ask me they r either friends with a page or servants to lords/princes n enemies of knights

I mean it all makes sense when you remember he jacked Aradia's time machine. They seem to be have some transportaion quality beyond just time, since the aradiabots all came to the final encounter from wherever they were on their doomed timeline. Gamzee running around and jacking shit he needs makes sense when you consider that. And he could have gotten the music boxes at any point on the meteor since everyone is prone to just stuffing their things into chests for some reason.

The George Lucas comment was definitely your best joke thus far. Regardless, the idea of Rage being "contrivance" really works, considering Gamzee was called "the most important character in Homestuck" despite not seeming it at all and his role in obfuscating the account of Homestuck Rose made.

OK here's my thought on the Gamzee, specifically on his plot armor [I guess >:/] and i shall do that in bullet points >:y ~one thing the aspect of time is about is Inevitability, occasionally in relation to death ~Lords/Muses are are a more powerful class and have more powerful powers, mainly because of single player sburb is MUCH harder and therefor gives stronger rewards/powers ~Caliborn's/Lord English's hero title [oh the Irony] is Lord of Time [One of a lords [theorized] jobs is to control there aspect[the other being to embody said aspect]], implying that he has some power over time, and then setting up the loop that resurrects him ~Another ability a Lord of Time might have is to keep someone from dying ~Gamzee is an important part of Caliborns rise to power [Lord English] ~Lord English uses his lordly time bending powers to keep him from dying in order to keep the time loop stable On the topic of of JuJu's and their loops, while the crowbar is a juju, there is nothing that suggests that the war-hammer of Zillyhoo is a juju, Gamzee could of just alchemized it himself during his session.

Well, I think the Hammer CAN easily be explained. It’s stated that anything can be created, replicated, ect, using the alchemiter. So… Gamzee obtains 1 Zillium. And he, probably by doing random bullshit, and, “miracles” is able to find the code to make the hammer. You may be asking; “then why do we never REALLY see the hammer again?” Simple. Gamzee doesn’t need it. He never actually DID need it. He probably made it, realized he actually can’t put it in his strife deck, and brought it out after going crazy because he is being instructed on the timeline by Lil Cal. He never attacks with it. He never is seen with it. It just went back into his capturelog deck. Actually, you can use it as a way to explain why Cherubs love Zilly Stuff. Caliborn created the perpetuating universe, Gamzee is a part of him, and the Cylladex is part of Gamzee. So the Warhammer of Zillyhoo disappears into Caliborn, causing the cherubs love of zilly-shit.

hm, never thought of that a friend of mine and i always thought his body just gained these amazing healing abilities from eating all that sopor slime due to trolls just sleeping in it gives them this boost of vitality eating it for such a long time would have given his body the ability to revitalize itself

Jack's head exploding creates a wormhole? I... huh. I never interpreted it like that at all - to me it was just a riff on the Praxis effect.

IMO in many ways Gamzee's "clownishness" is deliberately meant to fly in our faces and remind us that "he's not really Real and this is Just a fictional comic". Also, Gamzee may have gotten to the Cherub's Earth originally via John's own meta-comic retcon powers rather than the time-devices. Given that John had become "detached" from the story as is it's possible for him to STILL interact with the canon events even AFTER "The End". And Gamzee was sucked into the black hole, into the remains of nothing after Alt!Calliope engulfs all of paradox space and the Green Sun into a single entity around herself... Lastly, have you considered our origin timeline for Lord English might be off? Doc Scratch is created from Lil'Cal but that makes the relationship between Caliborn's Soul and LE more like the differences between John and Jake, ecto-related and not the same. And how exactly was the Green Sun supposed to be the source of LE's power in the first place? Caliborn never interacts with it whatsoever, and he even shatters the Clock which DocScratch later has in his office with the Crowbar Gamzee gives him, so really how can Caliborn ACTUALLY be Lord English? After all, we know that canonically Alt!Calliope is just as much of the person we know as Calliope as she herself is, the only difference being one grew up knowing only her Brother in a timeline where Gamzee raised them.. And she ate her brother's soul, remember? Alt!Caliborn's soul is Inside Alt!Calliope's body! After all, how can the Clock exist in Doc Scratch's future when Caliborn himself breaks the pendulum and smashes the case? DS even mentions a "funny little story about how he acquired the clock"... Lord English might very well be someone we've never met and "our" Caliborn might very well have been a Red Herring all along. Given the order of events in Act 7 it's reasonable to conclude LE's power might have come from consuming that "green hole" shown briefly, that Alt!Calliope was the sister he wanted to kill and not Calliope, and we've been Had. Made Suckers..

So this is what a rage player can do at their best...

I honestly don't think the Jack English's headsplosion as the implied method of delivery for Gamzee to Caliborn is all that weak as a standard plot point, particularly if you consider this may have been the entire reason Lord English possessed Jack in the first place - to deliver one of his origin points to its proper place. That aside, this is a pretty compelling metafictional interpretation, and I agree that Gamzee having always going to have been (cough) a fragment of Lord English is pretty important to his story overall. Lord English's powers as Lord of Time essentially makes all time, IE all observable events, fall in his favor to serve him. And thus the story serves Gamzee to make him what he ultimately becomes.

This video was very cool and it talked about Gamzee in a way that was amazing. But, if I may, I think Rage symbolizes independence/isolation, pride/me power or ego, and faith in ONE PERSON OR THING. It represents our faith or trust in the story. From the VERY BEGINNING Gamzee fits the Bard of Rage in this way. He allowed his own destruction by being isolated. And he allowed the destruction of others on the meteor by isolating them, massing with them and inevitably destroying them. EVERY PERSON HE'S "DESTROYED" IN A FIGHT has been in a one-on-one fight. When he's alone with someone else the other person gets ruined. He also has a lot of bullshit around him. He has allowed the destruction of our faith in the narrative SO MANY TIMES. Gamzee ruins everyone by destroying their pride or self-respect, and he allows a lot of destruction through isolating people. Blood, on the other hand, I think symbolizes unity/bonds, teamwork/friendships and relationships, and faith in a group. It represents our love for the CHARACTERS. While I can see how Hope and Rage could be opposites, I personally feel that Blood and Rage seem more like opposites. Even from observing the characters. Now, the words Blood and Rage don't sound like opposites. But eh. I really don't think the words Hope and Rage sound like opposites either.

Sorry, but the wormhole theory STILL doesn't hold up, we see him with his wings in MINISTRIFE before we see him meet caliborn and lose them. WWe see him l8r still wwith wwings wwhen he finds the cherub egg. Considering he hass no wings anywhereelse past this means that the gamzee we see in both beta kid sessions has come back from cal's session. credit to The Essential Hugh Jazz for that bit of insight. Also, as vriska had gamzee on lock down for the whole trip it is unlikly that he would be able to assemble GT outfit
