A Message to YouTube about Postroll Ads 

You’re so awesome for doing this ❤ I was really upset to learn we’d no longer have control over ADs shown in our videos. I try really hard to keep my ASMR videos at an even volume with no sudden jarring sounds to startle/wake people, so the idea of a loud AD coming up at the end is really upsetting and feels like it would render ASMR for sleep almost useless 😞 I will share your petition next time I upload or post anything. Thank you 🙏

I signed the petition when it first came out, but as November is approaching I thought of this video again. Thank you for taking the time to make the petition and spread the word about the changes 🥲 It really sucks that youtube will force us to have post roll ads :/ Until now I only ever put one skippable ad at the beginning but I guess now they’ll also impose those long ads 😭 I’ll likely encourage viewers who want to sleep to a video to use a timer on their phone with the option “Stop Playing” when the timer ends! This way the video will be stopped before the ad, but it’s a such a needless hassle all because of youtube’s bs

YES. YES. YES!!!! That is what I am talking about! Great presentation! 🎉 I am so glad they reached out and they are taking seriously the people! There are so many people who can't stand loud ads! Like, how will I like to listen to a 30 minute quiet video and then suddenly BAAAAAM! It's scary if you jump awake and definetly bothersome if you are awake and with headphones 😢 I so hope that we all win in the end.

Luuk, thank you so much for your diligence in collecting this information and commitment to protecting our sleep! Falling asleep without ASMR is next to impossible for me, and post-roll ads almost always wake me up, so I'd be in big trouble if they showed up after every video!

I’ve never rolled post roll ads, no need to leave the viewer with a bad taste in their mouth.

I'm only a newtuber but I've been watching ASMR daily for years, and I am definitely concerned by the idea of jarring ads being thrown in more often. RU-vid is showing they really can't be trusted to look out for viewers and creators. Thank you for keeping us updated!

I’m happy to see RU-vidrs do this, but honestly any ads at all kinda ruin ASMR Some people have midroll ads, and at that point shouldn’t count as ASMR. But even ads at the beginning can wake you up if you have things on a playlist

Couldn’t creators just turn off ads altogether and then not have to worry about post credit ads? They are not forcing people to use ads, it is still the content creators choice. So if these creators feel so strongly against it, just turn off ads completely. Problem solved

Both creators and their audience always get the short end of the stick. Instead of endlessly trying to ruin the end user experience, they should go extra hard with regulating and tailoring the ads being shown to their consumers. For example videos tagged as ASMR, should get ASMR-adjacent or right up ASMR ads instead, and have a maximum volume threshold set. Overtly sexual mobile game ads are also rampant. Like wtf? They should have been focusing on moderating these kind of bs and implement stricter rules before an ad is published. But yeah I guess just getting that sweet sweet advert money is more tempting than putting actual work on improving the user experience 🙄

Thank you Luuk. It is kind of you to be doing this, as well as disabling the ads in the first place. I suspect I would stop watching, simply so as not to be manipulated by a grab for yet more money. I’d miss you and a couple of other ASMRtists, and RU-vid in general, but I lived without it all before and I still can. I am heartened that you say you will research other media, as that is a particular weakness of mine. Thanks again!

Hey, this may not be seen since it’s quite a bit after the upload, but I hope you don’t feel too frustrated about this if RU-vid doesn’t back down. You still tried very hard- you brought awareness of the issue to tens of thousands of people, did what you could to solve the problem, and made a convincing argument as to why it would be bad for RU-vid. Yeah, it would suck for everyone who makes/enjoys ASMR, but it’s ultimately up to a large corporation that isn’t known for always making the wisest decisions. Regardless, thanks for putting a voice to the community.

RU-vid cracked down on accounts with ad blockers this week and disabled playback unless we buy premium or allow ads. I am frankly poor and cannot afford the premium fee. The ads blasting at the end of videos are startling me awake and giving me mini heart attacks. RU-vid just ruined ASMR for poor people.

Funny story... I got linked to this video because I signed the petition after another ASMRtist shared it, and I've never even been to your channel before. But OMG I love math & I love ASMR, so this video is just... *chef's kiss* I have Premium, so I don't really have a stake in this, except that I know not everyone has that privilege. 80% of my use on RU-vid is for asmr Ive been watching Asmr everyday before bed since 2016. Asmr is a part of my life and i am in no way ever gonna pay for premium. I never had too after 7 years of consistently using RU-vid so for them to force ads on us is crazy like c'mon the world is already crazy with inflation and everything being so expensive and to ADD another payment ?????

RU-vid needs to rethink this. Even if just for ASMR channels, they should work out an alternative.

RU-vid: We don't like AdBlock, it makes us less money even though only a small percentage use it. also RU-vid: Let's cram ads all over the place, a thing that drives the use of AdBlock, and then complain again about AdBlock and blame its use for more ads, and ad more again.

I noticed some Japanese ASMR channels I watch suddenly aren't monetized and was wondering if this is related to it.

I was going to upgrade to premium for the upcoming election year. Now I think that money I budgeted would be better spent on an add blocker. I hate cash-grabby policy changes. I already dropped Netflix and WOTC last year and haven’t missed them at all.

this community needs a big home, and youtube is making it harder and harder to stay under their roof. its like living with a parent who only loves you, but on the condition that you let them take you conversationally hostage 98% of the time.

RU-vid has started to prevent ad blockers. I'm one of the people who had said they use an ad blocker and weren't affected but I would now say I'd move to whatever other platform doesn't bombard me with ads.

I had premium lite, which is cheaper but only gets rid of ads with no other benefits. But ofcourse the only one that matters. RU-vid sent me an email a while ago telling me theyre stopping with premium lite, so itll only be an option paying full price for unnecesary features and getting back to more video than ad... i honestly dont know how ill respond to it.

Thanks for paying attention with it. I am a Premium user but even as a premium user, RU-vid's policy are mostly have not considered User's convenience but following the logic of money. Through this example, everybody finally know that how monopoly ruins many things.

The more they overdo it with annoying ads the more people will use adblock. And eventually whenever they start blocking adblock, it will be an endless war from that point onward on who can stay on top

Happy birthday dude! Genuinely appreciate what you've done for myself and others with your videos. You should be proud for having made a positive impact on so many people's lives, and as such I hope you had a deservedly enjoyable birthday.

Also worth them thinking about the fact that loud post roll ads waking you up are rage inducing, do advertisers want their ads to show when people are winding down and looking forward to relaxing? Or do they want their ad to make people feel the same way towards the ad that they do their alarm clock? Like I cannot have my alarm and ringtone the same because the alarm sound makes me feel instant panic and dread 😂 it's subconscious, I hear that sounds and know something terrible (waking up from a deep sleep) is happening. What sort of advertiser would ever want their product to start providing that response in people 😭😭

What I will say, just as a user and viewer - I've reported issues to them and they completely ignore feedback or reports. They even purposely limit what you can contact them about. Google are one of the most arrogant and invasive companies ever.

Well, what can I say when a video starts with 2 ads. And there are times when a 30-second ad cannot be scrolled through. They push it full on purpose, the game goes out, everyone should buy a RU-vid premium subscription.

I remember seeing the poll and considering putting in that I'd leave RU-vid in case you'd use that data to show RU-vid, but in my heart I knew you'd probably prefer unskewed results to sympathy votes hahah Hope the petition makes a difference- people should be able to have a say in how their creations are monetized

@youtube not everybody can afford premium so they don't get ads. and it's unfair to penalize people so I hope you will seriously consider the way forward is not to do this with the ads on ASMR

Done. Not only for ASMR but for all live shows. I was listening to one last night during my train ride home and the host kept apologizing about the advertisements because they were cut in the middle of a sentence and there's nothing she can do about it. It's really bothering for everyone. Not to mention some vids have ads every 5 minutes. So annoying. One of the reasons I was on RU-vid was to minimize the ads as much as possible. I don't want to pay RU-vid for their premium service because they will have ads there as well sooner or later. Where there's money to be made they won't care.
