A New England Christmas - getting ready for our 2021 home tour

Christmas is coming and I wanted to get this project done. Well I did it! I painted the brown wood shelves, cabinets, and fireplace mantel in the great room Village Green, a color by Behr (I used Benjamin Moore semi-gloss), and I've been busy decorating our home for my traditional and classic New England Christmas home tour. I even got all dressed up to give you a sneak peek (and yes I saw I spelled it as peak in the video ;-) ) holiday home tour of what I have done so far, for Christmas decorating, around the house and to give you more updates on what I will be doing for decorating projects in our antique cape house in the country.
I love the New England English Country style and classic New England Maritime style our antique home is starting to take on especially now that our great room reminds me of one of the rooms in the movie A Christmas in Connecticut.

Actually I was also thinking not to paint the natural wood just because it has be kept up with and is difficult to remove and retstain. But it does look nice.

Linda, your painted cabinets are just the brightness the room needed. I adore the color. I hope you keep the other walls the natural color- it reflects the history of your home. I’d be afraid that painting all the walls would make the room look just ordinary. I love how the cabinet wall is a beautiful focal wall with the paint. You toured a consignment shop and showed us a large wood hutch with all glass panels on top. I can definitely see that in your house, maybe against the back kitchen wall. For your kitchen design: open up the pass thru room (where you had your liquor bar and golf clubs 💙) so it opens up into the kitchen. I'd make that room a huge pantry with built in shelving and drawer cabinets. You could even locate the washer dryer there behind bifold closet doors. Find an antique drop leaf table (to use for folding clothes and a million other uses).

The wood paneling is gorgeous! As a true English library, the entire room would remain natural. The previous owners painted the shelf backs, and that I would have painted over.

I like the new green paint but I would definitely leave the other wall natural wood. It is beautiful and I like the contrast. I love the vignette you’ve created there, it struck me as soon as the video started. I like it a lot, just like it is.

I think I would leave the room as is now. Painting the walls green would be overwhelming like the all stained wood. Leaving it as is now makes each feature stand out to be appreciated on it’s own and keeps it warm, cozy and welcoming.

Looks great. Just the right green to go with the paneling and wood floor. I get 1940’s vibes from this house. Sometimes if a thing is authentically rough i texture you just have to honor what it is . I think over time you will really love all the warm honey tones and textures.

Love, love, love the green paint. It made a complete change in the room. The kitchen tree is very similar to mine… I added some small mustard colored paper stars that added a touch of whimsy. The house is transforming right my eyes! Your hard work is really rewarding. Great job!

Loved this video and I love you wearing the dress and say about dressing up. That really warms my heart, I've been chided about dressing up, and you know...it's who I am. Now I have a friend in you that feels the same. I'm sorry you are tired, but again it warmed my heart, as someone quite a bit older, I get tired once in awhile to, I think that's God's way of giving us permission to enjoy the day without business and perhaps guilt. I met Charles Faudree 16 years ago at his shop in Tulsa. Fabulous Shop! He was so kind and showed me all around and talked about his vision. He had two of his beautiful King Cavalier spaniels there. I’ve met a lot of celebrities but my daughter said it was the first time she’d ever see me fawn over someone. Then we walked down to an antique store just down the block and they had three more of the dogs. I commented to the clerk that they were like Charles’s dogs and he said they were. It was his antique store! It was a fantastic day.

I think the unpainted walls look beautiful as they are, or perhaps you could bleach them out and gain some lightness. I agree that painting them might prove too difficult! I’m distressed that you can’t find your foxes! I dearly despise not able to find something! Perhaps they were left at Groton?

That celery green color is my favorite green . I have a painted hutch that I bought at an antique consignment shop that I love, and it makes me happy when I look at it.😀 It is my simple treasure that I found years ago. Love the juxtaposition of natural and painted wood. You can buy cord channel covers from a big box store. They can easily be painted, and some come with a self-stick side to adhere to any surface. Absolutely beautiful room!

Absolutely GORGEOUS! I love the wood panel walls and wouldn't touch them. But, if your husband would like them painted, then maybe a good compromise would be to paint the ceiling the same color as the walls (or slightly lighter). Then you still get the contrast of the wood book shelves and he gets the Village Green around the room. Food for thought....either way it's lovely!

Where you have christmas books, you could put a fold down desktop...a place to pay bills, write lists etc. Or...add a shelf, then put a lot of small and medium sized framed family photos there.

A warm and coy home! I like the wall painted and mixed with the natural paneling.The paneling shows off the wood bored holes(Insects?) I toured The Breakers in Newport RI and they had an amazing natural burlap covered wall. Looking forward to the home tour!

Charles Faudree was pronounced correctly. Charles helped me with my home in Tulsa and decorated my parents home in Tulsa. He was very much a gentleman and had fabulous taste. Although his style was much more Country French he would have loved your homes and your blog. He would have been crazy about your gardens and he would have loved Willow!

The painted bookcases are just beautiful!!!!! I would keep the wood as is because the contrast is so nice however I would condition it. It looks very dry. I would almost be tempted to put a semi-gloss or better yet a satin shellac to brighten it up even more. This house is going to love the changes you make and so am I.

Christmas in Connecticut is my favorite Christmas movie of all time! The Christmas tree she decorates is exactly how my mom decorated her trees over the years. I still put tinsel on my real Christmas tree bringing back all those magical childhood memories. My husband and I plan to re-create the Christmas meal they had in the movie. How we first heard about this movie was on Public Radio. They were talking about the food. I knew I had to have the movie! You look absolutely gorgeous in that dress! I owned a set of the copper cookie cutters on your kitchen tree. If I am remembering correctly, I got them in the late 70s or early 80s. They were advertised on a bag of flour & were relatively inexpensive. The angel is also a little strange but not as weird as the pointy headed gingerbread man. I still have the heart shaped cutter from the set. Thanks for the home tour. I love the paint color & it looks like you did beautiful work with the painting.

I didn't think I would like the library walls painted... but I love it. It works so well with the dark wood. Also , like you , I believe life is to short for unlit candles. I want my life to glow while I am here ! And on the fireplace where you believe there may be writing... can you do that old piece of paper over it and scribble with a pencil over , to see if a word appears.... just a thought .

Hi! I did the paper rubbing soon after we moved in. I used a pencil and a crayon and it was not legible. I think there are too many layers. Once I strip it I hope to get my answer.

Love, love, love Christmas in Connecticut. My sisters and I grew up watching old movies. I love your youtube channel because of your simple elegance. I don’t think there is another you tube channel that has the same feeling. I am from the south and love the natural elegance of fine living such as pineapple, magnolia and other natural Christmas ornamentation. Thanks for bring this to us.

Everything is looking so beautiful. I do like the wood in the green room. I think it is a nice constrast. The tree in the kitchen is for pretty in it's more rustic form. Can't wait to see more!!

I loved seeing the matching champagne buckets,my mother-in law had the same one,they were married in 1949. My husband had a small table in their dining room set for two and champagne chilling in the bucket when he proposed!🥰 Also,I LOVE the square spaces in the bookshelves with the pictures and hurricanes. It’s soooooo not standard and echoes the shape of the window.

Linda I love your home....the natural wood and the painted. Our home is rustic and painted. In rooms with painted walls, I play up the antiques and wood tones. In the natural wood areas I use both painted furniture and antiques in pretty wood tones. I'm excited to see how you decorate your new home in your coming videos. It is all so beautiful!
