This episode of the new guitar build turned out to be a full tutorial on how I do the frets on my guitars.
This is again a long video where I explain everything I know about fretting a guitar as detailed as I can and show you the techniques I use when installing frets in a guitar neck.
Most techniques in this video apply to both new guitars as well as existing instruments and are not that hard to do yourself.

Hammering is a great way of setting the frets, I've seen real master luthiers here on YT and they hammer the frets

I typed in hand-made electric guitars, and your videos pooped up first. From then, I've actually watched your videos based on the attention to detail and the simplistic way you build them. It is just a common-sense method in building. I will be making a guitar after the new year, so I'm researching the methodology behind building.

Hey Joe, Thank you very much. I feel there is no need to over-complicate things. A simple method often works best and limits the chance of failure. I have used autosol for final polish. That's after going up to 12000 grit!! Perhaps a bit OTT but beautiful finish. In process of making my first guitar and your tutorials are first class!!!! Thanks for providing by far the best, detailed information on RU-vid. Brilliant!!

These videos are great! So much detail. I’m thinking about making my own guitar and maybe even try to sell a few if things work out lol . I’ve been doing wood working for about 12 years now but I’ve never tried to tackle something like this before. Your videos are extremely helpful. Thank you!

I am going to be making my own cigar box guitars and I want to be able to do inlay work and your dragon idea is amazing...thanks for sharing this and I feel a little more confident that I can actually make my guitars not only functional but "pretty or attractive" as well.

I’ve been dreaming of building guitars since the late 70’s. Back then finding info was extremely hard unless you went to a luthiers school. RU-vid has been an amazing source of great information. You are extremely detailed in your instructions and your results are always superb. I’ve watched many luthiers and found you during my searches. Glad I did. I keep coming back.

In the US they use the term “fall away” for that extra little bit of fret “relief” over the top 5-6 frets

Wat leuk dat ik een Nederlandse gitaar bouwer op RU-vid tegen kom. Ik speel al jaren gitaar en heb de laatste jaren wat interesse om mijn gitaren te onderhouden. Ben daarom wat youtube video’s gaan bekijken. Ik kwam al snel crimson guitars en Jerry Rosa tegen en dan wordt het verslavend om te kijken. Inmiddels kijk ik een hoop gitaar bouwers en heb ik een aantal van mijn gitaren compleet verbouwd. De eerste echte bouw gaat er ook aankomen, al moet ik even goed bedenken hoe ik dat wil hebben. Je video kwam naar voren bij de rest van de GGBO 2021 en ik vind ze erg leuk. Je doet het net iets anders en laat het net iets meer zien op sommige punten. Erg leuk. Ga zo door. Je hebt er een fan bij 😊👍

Hi Eztier, Heel erg bedankt en wat leuk te lezen dat je onder andere door mijn videos geïnspireerd bent geraakt om zelf aan je gitaren te werken en wellicht er zelf ook gaat maken. Ik probeer inderdaad zoveel mogelijk te laten zien en uit te leggen. Zelf had ik, als ik een tutorial keek, altijd het gevoel dat vaak cruciale informatie niet werd laten zien. Gelukkig pikken mensen dit op. Erg leuk.

If sandpaper is used, attach it to a wood block. Fret ends are brutally sharp and will cut you. Be extra careful when working with silver nickle frets. Some people are allergic to nickle.

@@UnquendorGuitars I know but I don't have a suitable place for a workshop at the moment so it has to wait ;P I will start with the crowning and polishing the frets of my old guitar for now and we'll see :) BTW I watched the entire series now and the final effect is stunning and the finish looks fantastic! I saw you removing any leaking glue right away - don't you face any problems with applying a finish on that spots? I've heard that it's better to remove any excessive glu after it solidifies so that you don't squeeze the glue into the wood pores but I don't know if it's really the case.

I’m now subscribed and notified! I really enjoy your videos! I’ve recently started building myself but have yet to do my own neck. I’m really encouraged to finally give it a go myself. I found you on youtube while looking for guitar building videos and I'm happy I did. I'm building my first guitar. I play like crap but I love guitars. I bought an all maple neck with the 4-2 tuner holes. It came really nice. I am waiting on a Firebird body. I know I will be using a Bigsby or a Duesenberg Les Trem. I am still figuring out the electronics. Your videos are great. I may try a logo inlay on the body. Thanks again.

Hi go2mikerenzi, I'm glad you're enjoying my videos and are getting some helpful information from them. Good luck and have fun building your guiter. I recommend doing a practice inlay on a piece of scrap/cheap wood first before doing it on the body of your guitar.

Hi, Daniel! I've learned a lot from your videos, really following your step by step advice and patience, I'm slowly and gloriously nearing the end of my first finished seven string neck! But I have a question about fret shaping: at 21:40 you start with the 24 to 1 filet, then the entire length of your instrument goes through the first few frets and you hook the last one very slightly, so it gets a lot less work than the others. Isn't it more correct to start in the middle so that all the frets get the same treatment?

Another great video packed with information! Quick question, when you mention sand paper grits you are giving the numbers in European Standard right? I live in the US and I just want to make sure I have my numbers right. Thanks in advance :)

Hi Ron, Thank you, And to answer your question. Yes I am. However up to 220 Grit the differences are minimal after that the two standards start to vary quite a bit. As long as you go up the grits while sanding or polishing you should be fine no matter what standard you use. If you're interested there are conversion tables out there on the internet.

How do you manage to sand down the frets WITHOUT removing the mark on the top tho? Sanding just the sides at an angle? Doesn't seem very practicle with loose paper, maybe with a block idk.

Hi, I’m new about adjusting my guitar. I have action ruller and feeler gauge. I adjusted my guitar with 0.10 feeler gauge and fitting well at 8. Fret and I adjusted my action 6. String to 2.00 and 1. String to 1.5 but I’m hearing buzz. Buzz starting 7. Fret to 13. Fret. Is that mean I’m playing really hard and causing buzz and must I play softer or I have to raise the strings or is that mean I’m adjusting truss rod wrong? I’m capoing the 1. Fret and pusing with my finger at (where meet my neck with body, 17. Fret) and checking with 0.10(0.25mm) feeler gauge and gauge barely touching to string. Can still neck relief cause buzz while feeler gauge fitting well? Or am I playing really hard and causing fret buzz and should I play softer or rise my actions? I’m sorry if my english is hard to understand but I hope you can understand my question and answer. Have a good day.

So some use a drop of water to ease installation of the tang. Do you do or know about this idea?

Hi MixingGBP, I haven't heard of that 'trick' before. It seems counter effective as water swells the wood closing the fret slot. It could be this 'trick' is used when the slots are just a little too wide to make the slot narrow enough for the fret tang.

Hi Gurup, I think, like with so many guitar related topics, it's all about personal preference and I leave it up to my client what fret material they want. Personally I haven't had a request for stainless steel frets or used them on my stock models yet so I can't give any advice on this. For my stock models I use nickel/silver frets as this is what most players are familiar with.

Hi Mr Frontranger. I guess you mean the wire used for the side dots. It’s 2mm aluminum wire bought at a local arts and crafts shop. I think it usually is used in jewelry making or something like that.

Hi there! So impressed of your video's really inspirational for me! I'm just a guitar repair guy but you have certainly giving me a push in goin for building my own (basses) instuments.However I really hope u continue with these video's and I really have gone through all the "great" youtube vid's that's should be informative(?) but usually are just a way for getteing people to buy their products! So thanx again and please keep it up!
