Thanks Lee. Think you’ve hit the nail on the head here, and found myself giggling away at the 4D comment. I think you’re absolutely correct in your assessment of a certain clique of Tesla appreciators 😂👍

I agree with the speculation on the price of the CLA, it will be much more expensive with model3. I think it will be targeting a different audience that appreciates a different style of design and more traditional luxury. It is good to have more choices for the consumer, but it most certainly will not be a model 3 killer.

The claimed range won’t be anywhere that in real life and the price will be huge, but you do have to give it to Mercedes, it’s a great looking concept and gives them a headline to shout about and bandy around the Tesla bear press who of course will claim it’s the end of Tesla. We all know the reality is, as Lee says, this concept will never see production in any volume or price competitiveness with Tesla. It’s actually a good thing if other makers make better cars, expanding the EV market choice (well for the luxury end).

Lucid's relatively tiny differential appeared to be very clever and appropriate, wonder if Tesla will adopt similar. (Munro naturally) Diff on high speed side of gearbox, much higher RPMs traded for greatly reduced torque, seems to make sense. (realize it's small part of Lucid engineering exceptionalism, efficiency, just interesting and impressive)

I thought it was a clever title for New Model 3 killing old 3. I was doing final checks on my premises back in early 2019, via tuning into the shorties, they were literally emotionally *hysterical,*... "If this is all you boys got I'm betting big against you." ...so I did.

Lee, another interesting video. Tesla tend not to produce concept models per se. Their model reveals tend to be very close to what's actually delivered to customers, albeit from product reveal to production can be a few years (Cybertruck). With regards Elon and 4D chess, I'm minded of the oft quoted quote, wrongly attributed to Charles Darwin; "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change." being adaptable to change is Tesla and Elon's differentiator. P.S. are you still intending to update your Tesla Profits & revenue webpages?

I think it is good to give credit to mercedes where it is due. From media covering this CLA concept, they say mercedes is targeting very good energy efficiency with this car, about 12kwh per 100km.

So 7.5kwh per 100 miles for us in UK. That’s some claim - no one gets anything like that in the real world, only with true hypermiling which on one every does in reality, just in testing. Still nice to see them trying but these claims are all hype.
@darylfoster7944
@darylfoster7944 10 месяцев назад
@@ISuperTed your conversion is backward. You have to multiply by 8/5, not 5/8. It comes out to 19 kwh per 100 miles, which is still lower than the new model 3, which is about 22 kwh per 100 miles.

About ADs Tesla must do branding ADs not product ones. that will give ability to ask 10% more for a car. Also they must possibly introduce different brands. As car is product of greater customer evolvement and customer do research, but still. When doing product ads current media space can counter it and turns it negative. It is harder to turn negative branding ADs and when you order ADs then fud goes away - since you are potential customer.

Mercedes have been doing some interesting research in recaptured energy from the cars body motion using inductive suspension. It will be interesting to see what everyone else comes up with that tesla hasn't considered.
@BigBadBossu
@BigBadBossu 10 месяцев назад
The problem for Mercedes is that they are just a trifling sideshow to Tesla, like all the other EV manufacturers. Any technology that these companies come up with can be immediately remade and used by Tesla quicker than these companies can even get their own new technology to production. People forget that Tesla has a proven track record for fastest implementation of new technology out of all car manufacturers. They can brew up all the sauce they want only for Tesla to bring it to market in force faster than the creators can.

The big difference between legacy and Tesla with EVs is still volume. Legacy are not ready to produce any of their EVs at the sort of scale that Tesla is. This indicates to me that they have a different view of future demand than Tesla does. With many markets now at over 10% of new cars sold being EV we are on track for those markets to get to 80% by 2031 or sooner if adoption accelerates.

Until 2018 the German automakers were hiring Grohman Automation Engineering for a lot of their production engineering, and then Tesla bought Grohman. This was a huge leap ahead for Tesla's production engineering, and a huge drop in the German production engineering, a drop they seem not to have recovered from. This is a big part of why the Germans are unable to compete on price by making efficient automated EV production. And sure, Musk and Tesla make mistakes, but two of their huge advantages are their willingness to make mistakes, sometimes they try multiple ways to achieve things at the same time to see which actually works better, and then their ability to admit and fix mistakes at lightning speed.

I have said that Tesla's biggest weakness is their batteries, they don't make them. And when one is competing with battery companies like CATL and BYD, whom keep moving the goalposts, and have HUGE manufacturing capabilities, not to mention sources of lithium, well, good luck Tesla on that one. Chemistry is a whole different ballgame than the mechanics of making a car out of metal. One can reduce the costs of manufacture as much as is possible, but if that does not include the most expensive part, the battery, well there is still a lot of weakness there, isn't there? That includes the grid batteries as well.
@MarcoNierop

About one thing Elon Musk is absolutely right.. "Concepts are EASY, (mass) production is HARD!... " IF Mercedes comes out with a productions version, it will be, as always, a hugely watered down version of the concept. Forget about the fancy seats, the excessive lighting, fancy grill and headlights etc.... But no one will remember the concept when the production version comes out in about 5 years or so... IF Mercedes is still around at that time, they could have gone bankrupt before that, when sales of their ICE cars has collapsed completely.

You've driven premium vehicles. Presumably you wanted the high performance (and not the high price tag). What we have now is a company making the highest performance at high quality for a reasonable price. So now, premium somehow has to be made to mean lower performance (and range and worse handling and slower charging etc).
@darylfoster7944
@darylfoster7944 10 месяцев назад
Premium doesn't necessarily correlate with performance. Most people just want leather cup holders and heated door arm rests and all kinds of other nonsense. They couldn't care less about performance because they barely drive the speed limit.

concept cars make me laugh. I had a "dream machines: reality ripping rides" book printed in 2009. It was full of wild futuristic designs by every name brand. Somehow, aptera accidentally slipped into that book, their oldest prototype, ye olde snow white one with 125 miles of range. It was the only one with a stated range (or a real photograph) in the entire book. Since 2009, Aptera has died, gone to hell, punched the devil in the face, and risen from the grave, pulsating with main character energy. and every other design in that book was forgotten by even its own digital artist by the time his or her head hit the pillow at the end of that day. What a silly stupid game. Mercedes posting a concept image is less credible than BP making a climate pledge. Who is it for? Just for kids who haven't yet experienced the particular prank of concept cars?

I 100% agree Tesla manufacturing is still underrated or overlooked by many critics and investment "experts". The competition has been coming for years and there are times when competition does seem to offer some aspects that are better than Tesla, but when you pull together the whole picture, Tesla is hard to beat in every category they compete in. I think the Hyundai Group has brought some great EV models to market, but they are still dealing with legacy dealership issues that often makes buying the cars a pain or filled with extra costs, they are not as good with the software side of things, and no doubt their costs to build is much higher, and the tax credits thing is an issue as well. Seeing the Mercedes EV is exciting, but reality is likely to be much different. I think Volvo might have a better threat to Tesla than Mercedes. Right now, Tesla is the biggest threat to Tesla. As their volume of sales and production reach new heights, it makes changes harder to do and will keep stress on their teams to keep hitting ever growing goals. While so many companies seem to be setting low goals or backing off on goals, Tesla has the EV go pedal pressed all the way down and is going for it. I find it interesting how many builders cannot turn a profit and seem to be backing off when in reality Tesla was taking big losses until they finally hit the winning formula. Seeing VW invest into a partnership with Xpeng feels like yet another scramble as they cannot get their EV game working how it needs to be working so they have a strong future. Tesla killers are going to come from China and Tesla is already battling it out in China with them and doing fine. If Musk can keep from making more comments to piss of people about some political or social issue, Tesla will just keep rocketing up. I fear Musk making some insane racist comment or do some other thing that just causes a massive backlash against Tesla more than I do Tesla competition.
