So about that link to Ballet Mécanique, here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wi53TfeqgWM.html. It makes for pretty stressful viewing but it's a visual testament to the interwar avant-garde, that's a pretty amazing piece of history just sitting on RU-vid. Check it out and let us know how much of the video you could get through. Now, a lot of what we do on this series is a lot more lighthearted and if you like that then you'll definitely love our new collectibles range over on our website. Watch Indy break down what it is here and go check out the store ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tcjGQOIN2sQ.html And make sure you read our rules of conduct before you comment: community.timeghost.tv/t/rules-of-conduct/4518

being a Brazilian, one of the things I love about Argentina is: on the "short history of the country" section in a 2005-ish AA road guide is, plainly said, that in the late 1800s the state conducted wars of extermination against the pueblos originarios. That level of honesty blew my mind. It might still take 200 years for brazilians to be as honest about our "wars of conquest" against the índios.
@TullyBascombe
@TullyBascombe 3 года назад
@@robertohexsel3763 Actually Wounded Knee was a massacre. There is little evidence that the Indians opened fire first. Most of the Indians were unarmed old men, women and children. The US Army opened fire with not only rifles but also artillery and Gatling guns.

The summer of 1924 also saw the infamous Democratic National Convention in New York City. Nicknamed the long convention or the great klanbake, there was a brutal heatwave and the Ku Klux Klan was a major power broker at the convention; it lasted from June 24-July 9 with 103 ballots before settling on John W. Davis as their candidate. For their part the Republicans quickly nominated President Calvin Coolidge to be their party's standard bearer in a process that Will Rogers said could have been done by postcard. Mr. Coolidge is heavily favored to win his own term as president in the November election. However his success is marred by personal tragedy as his 16 year old son Calvin Jr. dies from septicemia brought on by blood poisoning in early July.

The photo in 13:50 shows Julius Popper, one of the main perpetrators of the selknam and indigenous people genocide in the Patagonia Region, in Argentina and Chile. That Genocide was sponsored, or at the very least ingored by these governments. This was done in the name of economic interests of businessmen and the exploitation of those lands mainly for livestock. A trully obscure and sad part our countries histories, and because of that, we must preserve the heritage, culture and traditions this indigenous people left us so something like that never happens again. Saldy in Chile there aren't any of them left, and I think there are only a few left in Argentina. Thanks Indy and the team of Time Ghost for teaching about these things

A friendly technical editing suggestion: many media players and laptops automatically "mute" the audio when nothing is playing, and "unmute" it roughly a second after the video starts playing. In almost all your videos, the talking starts immediately when the video starts, so the first few words can't be heard. If the talking started just one second later, this problem would be solved. Thank you for the amazing, well written, well produced, well edited, and well narrated content. Keep up the good work!

@alancranford3398

@@TimeGhost You mentioned the Douglas World Flyers in another video too, in From Aerobatics to Terror Bombing. Walt Disney mentioned the World Flyers in his 1943 production "Victory Through Air Power" and the segment on the history of flight. I was talking about the entire project, though your two productions did cover the flight. Covering the modified Douglas torpedo bombers would be nice--but how did the World Flyers communicate? How did they get permission to fly over and land on all those nations? Somewhere I've a book on that epic mission with photos of the equipment layout--bailing wire, canvas bucket, rifle and pistol among other things. It might not be very interesting, but the World Flyers took place at a time when there was enough global cooperation for three airplanes and foreign military crews plus foreign military and naval personnel supporting these aircraft to touch down and park on another nation's sacred soil. Why those single-engine convertible biplanes (floats or wheels) instead of twin-engine flying boats with detachable landing wheels? Why Army pilots and not Navy pilots? Diplomats must have been working overtime (and outside of America drinking to excess) to make things happen. Teletype communications and wire photos sent over underwater cables? Long range radio was in its infancy. There's a lot of things that had to be there in order to make that first around the world flight possible--and a major part was political.

G'day, Not much would have Bin-Different. Pretty much every "VIABLE" Site for Hydro-Electric Generation Schemes have sprouted such a facility, anyway, and basically there are not enough Mountaintop Lakes, or Elevated Valleys suitable to be damned by being Dammed ; and as it happened, in real life, EVERY Hydro-Electric Scheme ever built has effectively destroyed the Riverine Ecology within the Valley in which it was inflicted. The Snowy River Hydroelectric Scheme in NSW managed to destroy TWO Rivers, one on each side of the Watershed, bu sucking all the Water out of the Snowy River to feed the Turbines - then discharging it through Tunnels to feed an Irrigation Scheme which salinated the Soil on which the purloined Water was applied. Not much, I suspect. Hydroelectric hits their limits pretty quickly in the states against power demands, even during the WPA days of the new deal, peaking out at %40. I'd guess that percentage would be a few higher-and more importantly, electric power would lean towards being public and not private in the US due to the land/condemnation/water tributary issues involved forcing a earlier and more consistent generalized choice in that department.

4:48++ "Dunlop is one of those excentric intellectuals" ... - it was at this time that the ideology of technocracy was starting to spread, and this year the Vienna Circle spread its ideology of Logical Positivism, that in the late 20th century became a pretty nutty ideology called Humanism (those with an "Atheist" faith explaining their faith as a lacking-a-faith-faith).

Isn’t the Prince of Wales’s name David and not Edward? Edward was just the name he took on when he became king.
@TimeGhost
@TimeGhost 3 года назад
Well he was baptized Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David. To his family and friends he was known as David. Unfortunately, Indy knows a lot of people but he isn't too familiar with the British Royal family so calls the Prince of Wales by his most recognized name, Edward.

@@TimeGhost Well, blame where blame is due- I didn't write this episode, Francis did, who is very much British. As for my knowledge of the royal family- my grandfather (mother's side) was in real life actually friends with Edward (though they didn't meet until after he abdicated, he was "just" the Duke of Windsor when they were pals), so I should've caught that myself when proofreading and editing the script for shooting. That I am willing to take blame for.

Well, ethnic cleansing *_bolsters_* conquest (no resource competition, no resistance to settlement and expansion), as the case here in the US, but in most cases, the goal is subjugation. That said, ethnic cleansing doesn't exist without the goal of conquest, while most conquest doesn't employ ethnic cleansing. Historically, local indigenous peoples constitute a resource in the form of labor, perhaps eventual taxation or as exports (slaves).

How did Chicago produce more electricity than London with only 3 plants? Was it to do with new technologies?
@theamici
@theamici 3 года назад
Probably a lot to do with size as well. You can get the same thing today too. The Three Gorges Dam for instance produces as much electricity alone as a middle-sized country on its own. It produces more electricity by itself than the entire production in The Philippines, and only slightly less than the entirety of the Netherlands. In fact, it produces more electricity than a quite large country too as it produces about 20-25% more than all of Pakistan which has a population well over 200 million ppl.
@TimeGhost
@TimeGhost 3 года назад
Amici has it basically right. It's difficult to compete with the pure industrial capacity of America. Combine that with a dense population and an industrialist attitude and Chicago races ahead.

Fifteen years, maybe a bit less to be exact. Within this time frame one of the most highly advanced, deeply cultured, developed and civilized societies in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. Germany would start the beginning of their dark downward spiral into complete insanity with their 'Euthanasia Aktions' in mid 1939. Reichsleiter Philipp Bouhler and Hitler's personal physician SS-Brigadeführer Karl Brandt's actions would turn names like Tiergarten Strasse 4, Hartheim, Bernburg, Sonnestein and Brandenburg synonymous with what happens when highly intelligent people who are educated in some of the most advanced universities in Europe put their minds together and use their racial beliefs combined with unwavering loyalty to a madman, along with their ominous future vision of a thousand year Reich and utopian like society in Europe, diabolicaly develop such an absolute insane and delusional program to cold bloodedly murder hundred of thousands of disabled people referred to as people that are 'Life unworthy of Life' by the Reich.

This series just keeps on being fantastic. I still have worrying thoughts about the rise of White Nationalism in America and today I learn about the Argentinian massacre of indigenous peoples. And with the #climatecrisis and discussions around local direct current electricity grids being the only way forward I was amazed to learn about the energy conference. Our greatest achievements seem to be our greatest blunders too. Our dreams will see us through because our international brain is stronger than our individual efforts. 👍🏽🌈😎

"I'm not advocating for it, I just really, really, really want to make sure no one puts any particular attention on it." Why can't you people just say what you mean? Where's the bravery in your passive aggressive, new speak version of speaking your opinions. The US gets the attention it gets for two reasons: one, because it's an incredibly powerful nation and two, because it's a nation that has had a habit of moralizing at others while being incredibly hypocritical about those same morals. Russia and China (and a not insignificant number of United States citizens) would like the United States to simply stop being moralistic and stop criticizing anyone so they can be quietly comfortable with doing all the awful things they're completely comfortable with doing. Some other nations (and a not insignificant number of US citizens) would like the United States to actually carry the courage of its convictions and act the way It pretends it does, and instructs others to act like. Do better.
