The Russian Orthodox Church was once an all-mighty institution throughout what was the Russian Empire. But now in a matter of years, it has been completely swept aside by the new Soviet government in the name of progress and reason. This is just one - particularly violent - example of what has been a common theme of this era: the conflict between religion and modernity. It has already come a few times in the series and will continue to do so, but it's not always a story of retreating faith like it is in this episode. As you will see in later episodes, organized religion often fights back against modernity and even sometimes tries to accommodate it. You'll have to stay tuned to find out exactly why. Please don't forget to read our rules of conduct before you comment: community.timeghost.tv/t/rules-of-conduct/4518

@@AmanKumarPadhy Home churches are not technically allowed. There are government sanctioned places of worship but in general you're freedom to believe is cicumscempt to a state sponsored priest or preacher and NO rights to maintain either parishioner privacy. This sounds modern and good until you remember they have prisoner reeducation camps still in operation. It isn't as though crimes are being contested by an impartial judiciary but that the narrative surrounding any and all crimes must always prop up the state, the ccp, and communism. There is no such thing as the right to freely practice your beliefs or interpreting/ learning, in an objective manner, the history of the gospels or other religions. Where we have entire schools dedicated to apologetics and history of religious beliefs in the west, such institution for any faith practice do not and cannot exsist in China. To further illustrate my point let's consider another monitheistic group,Weiger muslims. They have been unduly interred and blamed by Chinese authorities (good luck finding the actual causes) of everything from terrorism to refusing to educate their children to be "proper" Chinese citizens. (Nevermind that their school system area is massively underfunded and the people, who are unlikely to renounce their faith to join the ccp, are wholly disbarred from the type of money and educational oppourtunity through funding that state officials children have direct access to. Gaming the system, to beat out other kids in their test based university placement system means those with the most money wins) being used for organ harvesting. (Non-consensual donors) and whose children are actively being forced into schools not unlike the mission schools in the U.S and Canada. The ones who infamously broke down all family bonds, robbed parents of their children as an excuse to civilize and educate them, and then had the audacity to claim that sepating children from their parents and culture was somehow "saving "them. In a horrible way, atheist China has and will do exactly what they denigrated the major Christian religions from doing.

I feel it necessary to point out that Lenin distorts the meaning of Marx' quote regarding religion. Marx writes: "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people" For him, religion is opium in the sense of a painkiller and his plan for getting rid of religion is to get rid of the causes of religion, i.e. poverty and exploitation.

It will mention the fumbling around of humanity, in it's golden age, for trying to forge an even better future. Come now, most of the world is enjoying unrivaled progress, economic prosperity and ever greater scientific discoveries. Sure, it has it's shitty times, but anyone with a degree of history will know, we are living in the best times of human civilization. They might blame us for the problems we postponed to future, such as climate change, but todays politics, from center to the both edges, is a result of the progress we have been making over the last century. And some problems, such as racism, is from the last century we inherited and still trying to resolve. To subscribe to the idea that any age is without a problem, or perfect, is a complete folly. Human progress comes from fumbling around all the time, and by happenstance discovering something that will shape our future.

Another excellent episode in your excellent series! I do have one quibble, though: the Irish Civil War was not primarily about the partition of Ireland and probably not even to any great extent conditioned by partition (because the separation of the northeastern six counties was generally seen as inevitable - at least temporarily - by all sides). The major bone of contention was the continuation of the relationship between the British Crown and the new state, especially the requirement that members of the new Free State Parliament swear allegiance to the King. Continued membership of the Commonwealth required acceptance of the King as the Irish Head of State, which was anathema to the declaration of an Irish republic that provided the justification for the armed uprising against the British. Part of the reason why physical-force Irish nationalists are still referred to as "Republicans" originates in this objection to the new state. The accent put on the issue of partition is more recent, and many (including me) would say that it is used as a post-facto justification of the actions of the anti-treaty forces, whose republican aims were eventually achieved peacefully over decades by the state, thus leaving the rebels open to the accusation that the bloodshed caused by their uprising against their own government was all completely pointless. Keep up the good work!

Indy a small correction; Francis Scott Key wrote a poem which was put to music and became the American National Anthem informally at first but not officially for about 100 years. Otherwise a great video.

A good point and thanks for the extra clarification. Although when it's a little sidenote like this, it's okay to say it how we did. A bit like "Blake's Jerusalem", the musical setting for "And did those feet"

The fedoras are coming out of the woodwork for this one. Doesn't change the fact that this is St Tikhon's feast day, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour stands again, and they built a church at the site of the Romanovs' martyrdom.

I was watching a series on Cancer and one doctor said that vitamin D acts like a hormone and should be taken every day as a prophylactic guard against Cancer. Now there are reports that it helps you survive COVID as many victims were deficient in it.

Geez, that photo of Molotov looks so much like Scott Morrison. I'm not saying they are anything alike but it did make me think about what a scomo cocktail would be. A Molotov cocktail is a mix of alcohol used to burn russians. A scomo cocktail is one scomo has on a beach while Australia burns.

The church later became connected with the nkvd and later the KGB as the upper clergy were members of the secret service even until today.
@katydid5088
@katydid5088 3 года назад
This is both true and yet partially false. Open clergy and traditional heirarchical independent bishoprics (ones not engaged with the NKVD) were shut down. The orthodox Russian Church is independent of the Holy Roman Catholic Church due to disagreements of theology from the Council of Nicea, established different theological practices. Papal infallibility, and therefore a centralized authority solely responsible to the Pope, is not a tenant of Orthodox religious practice. Each church has council with one another but doesn't supercede all canonical decisions to a Pope, only the Archbishop of the diocese. Before this, the church retained both its educational, privitized social health care role within the population. Soviet institutions would lack the internal capital and interpersonal authority to make a meaningful impact on caring for the people until after the second world war. Finally, to redress the claim of spies enervating the church, they did and they were put in place to squelch independent meetings and thought unsympathetic to or actively resistive of the deficits in communist led bureaucracy. The communist government, knowing they couldn't wholly afford to alienate the populace, made what most considered a psuedo free church. As mentioned above in the episode, they controlled speech, writing, and practice (veneration of holy relics,consecration of holy the eucharist, and other accoutrements of faith like robes,icons, ect) It is why many missionaries in the west established local evangelical efforts to provide literature and more practical parts of aide to clergy who were incarcerated or put out of work for their inability to comply with government monitoring. They did not want to become snitches on their own congregations.

@@katydid5088 That's very interesting, yes. It's also true that in England, when Henry VIII ordered the closure of monasteries, hospitals, and other Catholic institutions, that "charity in England died." Christian institutions take care of everyday people. Governments don't seem to be very good at that. Governments, however, seem to be really interested in what goes on in confession. But with them there's no absolution, only punishment.

Hello Time Ghost, hug fan. I did notice an issue, around the 10:20 mark of the video. If Jedrzei live between 1768 and 1838... then how did he speculate on the connection between rickets and sunshine in 1840?

The difference between the two types of progress is that the discovery of Vitamin D was a slow march, met a felt need, and wasn't forced on anyone. Lenin's view on religion was just his own opinion, forced on everyone, and he just decided that it was "progress".

No. Lenin said that anarchism is a child of desperation and can be ascribed to intelectual people that have a disorder or having become astray, this condition can happen to them but not to the poor. This became the root of the movement.
