A New Years Day Massacre - Visiting the Location - Hatfield McCoy Feud 1888 

Cotton top mounts was my cousin, his mom and great great grandmother was his mom’s sister, my great great grandma was Malinda Grimmett Hatfield. And my great great grandfather was James Marion Vance and his uncle was Jim M Vance from the Hatfield and McCoy fued.

Happy New Year, Leo and Heather. From a big Fan in the Garden State. I knew of this incident, and believed it was the last act of bloodshed of the Feud. I can't take sides, even though three young'uns were killed here. Overall, I can't say either family "won." The exact date though slipped my mind until now, and ironically I was in Philadelphia, PA, with shots fired into the sky at their annual Fireworks. I must say my heart sank some to realize it. But I'm giving a moment of reflection here now, 8:40 pm Eastern, 1/2/2024, for all lost on either side. And thankful the families had that ceremonious Burying Of The Hatchet one day. #RESPECT!! WJ

I have been watching videos on the fued for a long time and it just kinda hit me when you said that Randall possibly took off and hid in a neighbouring pig pen. If that is true, does that not make Randall McCoy a coward? Again, if it is true, it means he fled the scene and left his wife, children and grandchild to fend for themselves. A man who truly loves his family would stay and fight to the death! But when all is said and done, the truth of what really happened that night, 135 years ago, is locked away permanently and the facts are lost forever. If every participant of that horrible event could speak today, be it the victims, survivors or the murderous lawbreakers, I’m sure they would all have a different take to some degree on the actual facts of that night. Truth never comes across accurately when intense emotions run high!

I know this fued is a part of local as well as American history, with all that's know, there is still many holes that just have to be best guess. I really enjoy ya'll researching and telling these stories as best you can. I trust ya'll will get through the upcoming winter and can safely bring us some more interesting stories.
