Retired from dsny in 1989, best job I ever had you did your job and they left you alone. 831 union very good and well run.Snow work is fun plowing but after storm you have to climb over the piles you made to pick up garbage.
In all of these DSNY videos there are those double ended long garbage bags. What the hell are those, what's inside? Never seen bags like those anywhere else.
You have to take a city wide test to become a bus driver and garbage truck driver too you can go to other states its just a simple application nyc is all about money
It isn't like being a cop. All trucks have to report in back at the shop, one so they can run inspections on the truck but also so the next crew can use it. Think about it, if you were allowed to bring it home and were off the next day, that's one less vehicle other crews could use.
Old question I know but anything could be in the trash, hence why you have to wear gloves. There could be hazardous material such as needles, human feces etc. Besides that, trash in itself is toxic so you're breathing in fumes which could affect you long term.
It is obvious you never worked on the truck. both the driver and the loader work the truck. Not like the 60ties when you actually had a driver and loader.
Man this job really takes away your life.. no offense to anyone who's worked a job like this. I myself am taking the sanitation test soon and incredibly not looking forward to it lol. 44k a year is 25k less than what retail managers make a year, and those guys just sit at a desk all day! and that's just barely enough to get by when you have a family to support.. a job like this (don't take this personally) is really for non college graduates who dont have a family to worry about, which is many of us, which is why the test for this is insanely competitive now. Having said that, they make you stay an extra 4 hours during the winters, 12 fUn hours a day. So if you can catch a minimum of 6-7 hours of sleep everyday, you'll have an amazing 5, maybe 6 hours of your entire life to spend each day. A perfect life for workaholics though, lol. As you can see, I'm not too happy about joining this community, and have put a lot of thought into the negative part of the business. If anyone can tell me any positives, that would be great! I fail to find any however 😅
I just took this test too. I'm looking forward to joining and your right this job would be perfect for me. I'm not a college graduate and I don't have a family as a yet. When I start this job I don't think imma have time to start a family. Waking up early was never for me and I like my naps.
@@muhamedjones122 I wrote this comment not with the intention of hurting anyone's feelings.. i hope i didnt. As truthful of words I spoke, I was mainly ignored lol.. nobody could even answer my question at the end of my rant 😭 anyways, good luck to u sir! Hope u can find joy in the job if u get it 👍👍
*incredibly not looking forward to it* my money is on you aren't sharp enough to get a high enough score Matt. Take your gender studies degree and get that job managing the bathroom at Marshalls. Its right up your alley.
