A nine-year-old is thrown off a horse after a dog attack

The boxer dog was running around a group of horses before trying to bite at the neck and tail of one of them, named Iggy, on Cleethorpes Beach in Lincolnshire. The dog's owner did nothing to bring the animal under control as he 'had smart trainers on and had not wanted to get them wet', according to witnesses. One eyewitness said that after two people restrained the boxer dog and returned it to its owner, he simply walked away without apologising or checking to see if the child was harmed. The nine-year-old girl is now said to be 'petrified' whenever dogs are nearby.

@richardmangelmann4975
@richardmangelmann4975 3 года назад
@@cheshirecat920 Well he is quite easy with that stuff. When we encounter dogs he usually just lays low and waits until they're gone, if its a big dog that comes too close I pick him up, when its a small dogs he's fine with them being close. One time one of the smaller dogs came too close and my cat straight up slapped it and ran away. Anyways for teaching them, definitely try it with a leash first. I think there are videos on youtube too. The cat needs to get used to the leash first, then introduce him to the outside or, given how anxious he is, just your hallway. Just ease him into it, do it every day and with time they get more chill. You could also try training him with a clicker. Definitely go to parks where the dog has to be on a leash and your cat too, that way you're in a controlled environment where you can pick him up if a dog gets too close. Maybe after a while hell deal with it on his own but don't push the cat into it. Weve been doing it for a while so mine has a normal route he takes where I know possible dangers and when we cross a road I signal him to stop and go. When were going on a trip and he looses sight of me he usually cries out and follows me.

It's a public area so dogs aren't more entitled to be there free roam. Poor kid! I had a close call with a dog and obnoxious owner myself that I got on my GoPro riding. If we weren't two experienced adults it could have ended like this. That's some patient horses right there. I don't blame the smaller one for bolting the dog jumped up at his face! Boxers were bred as hunting dogs designed to hang onto prey items until the hunter caught up (hence the squashed face so they can breathe while biting) As usual no owner in sight to give a stuff about their pet.. I've had dogs and mine wouldn't be off lead in a public space if I knew I couldn't trust him in a high stakes situation. Poor dog could have gotten trampled or kicked to death or paralysed because his owner was nowhere to be seen to step in.

Our horses got attacked by a dog when we were riding, my mother and myself, it was quite serious actually, the vet had to be called, as the dog was trying to kill my horse (the smaller of the two) by biting his throat, and under his tail. He was ripped up pretty bad, this dog had been chained, he was dragging it when he attacked. Seemed like a long time before the owner of the dog ran up and he had a time trying to capture him and get him off us. I heard later he had to be put down, not because he attacked us, but he later bit a man who was using a walker and checking his mail. These dogs aren’t playing. If we hadn’t stayed right there with the horses, or if they’d broken free from us and ran i do believe he might have killed one.

what a petty owner, she'd rather keep her gear dry than control an insane dog that caused a little girl to get hurt!!
@Kitsune1989
@Kitsune1989 3 года назад
She had more options on the horse and it was less dangerous given what she knew at the time. If she had dismounted she would no longer be able to fully control her horse. She could have been kicked by one of the horses on the ground, stepped on, bitten by the dog (then you'd have screaming kids and panicked horses reacting both to the blood, screaming, and dog.). If she bent down to try to control the dog then she could have been kicked in the head or caught under the ribs. Not to mention if a horse spooked as obviously happened later when the dog concentrated on the one, her first knowledge of that on the ground would be when she was run over. By staying on the horse she was able to see everyone and the dog. They were able to stop. If any of the horses had started to panic she could see what was happening and try to give direction. One of a horses first reactions will be flight. If a horse had taken off and the riders were more experienced they could have kept the spooked horse circling (it kinda looks like the girl who fell off made an attempt but was either too panicked herself or just lacked the experience) A horse will automatically adjust to keep its feet under them. By turning a small circle you force them to collect which both keeps them from getting up to speed and by collecting you are forcing them to engage their brain, taking them away from a flight or fight mentality. It's harder to collect a horse then to keep a working pace or to extend. It also meant that as a last ditch effort they could have booted it into a fast pace and left the dog behind if those nips became more aggressive. Presumably they were hoping the owner would come and control their animal. And were likely reluctant to run with riders that young and inexperienced. It could have left them in an uncontrolled dangerous gallop where they couldn't stop. Never mind the risk of tripping or getting a foot stuck in a hole or mowing some innocent bystander down. As they would be playing to the instinct to run rather then working within it and redirecting that mentality. Or gods forbid if one of them fell at a full tilt gallop.

Well, I will get a lot of hate here, and I have owned many horses for many years, all perfectly fine with dogs..... but I have been to the beach before on a weekend, where many many dog owners were at the beach and many families with young children running around. And a group of riders decided to CANTER! across the beach where children and babies were running, which I personally wouldn’t do or allow! But anyways, these people cantered with no regard to little ones or families around them on a BUSY beach. Now I have five dogs, all hounds, normally very well behaved around other dogs, children and horses (given I won them as well). Except, once the riders cantered and people let out shrieks and hollers because their kids were in the path of those nutty riders, our dogs thought it was a hunt / chase and barking mad chased after them. They didn’t bite or jump up at the horses but ran with them. The moment those silly people stopped , the dogs returned. So..... yes i could have them all on a lead, but quite honestly it was so irresponsible to canter where people were picnic-ing, little toddlers and children were running round and LOTS of dogs were loose. Go find yourself another place to go. And I am serious about this. I have horses and I thought that was stupid.

I’ve not ridden since the early sixties, as a seven year old on a donkey on Blackpool sands, I feel there is a lot of cruelty in horse riding ranging through some trotting horse training, bits, bridles, metal shoes, down to just bareback riding. But these riders were going about their business in an open space and they all, particularly the little girl, were put in extreme danger by the irresponsible dog owner. The only answer is for animal owners to keep control at all times and be prosecuted (if you can ID them) for any transgressions. The Yard Manager was very impressive in her calm explanation of what happened, and the testimony to how well her horses were trained was that most kept perfectly calm and even the terrified pony that unseated it’s rider was just keeping safe, running around away from the danger. Things could have been so much worse if the horse had bolted it could have caused more danger to bystanders. Just glad the little girl is ok, she could have died in this incident.

I'm amazed that pony just ran around in circles near the others and didn't take off along the beach. My Grandad's pony once bolted through town with his trap because a dog jumped up at his throat and hung on. Thankfully no one was hurt although the pony got its leg over the shaft and gashed it open. I always worry about loose dogs when I'm out riding. So many people don't bother to train them.

Perhaps at least one of the horses could be trained to charge at the dog in a case like this. I rode a Connemara pony with a friend and a dog did attack our horses. She told me my mount was trained to go after such dogs. Just turn her to face the dog and tell her to "get the dog" and she did.

First off, I agree, if your dog does not have obedience training and or recall training at the very least, he/she should NOT be allowed to run at large.. Second, the horse owner says she was surprised that none of the horses kicked the dog... I saw the horse being chased kick out with both back legs at the dog at least once. Understandable since the dog was harassing the horse .... terrible situation to be in.

I also had a similar situation. The dog started hunting my horse. The owner was in the house and the dog in the garden runned through a bush. She saw that and called the dog bag. A other situation was with a bicycle on a street. The dog wanted to play with the bicycle while cars drove on the street. That’s because I chose the next way down the street (about five meters away from the owner). Than the owner came and told me, that I should have stayed on the road instead of driving away, because her dog could have died because of me... I hate dog owners like her -> The dog owners who don’t know when to put the dog on a leash for safety

Well its also just the simple fact that there's leash laws for a reason. Whether a dog is well trained and behaved or not, there's leash laws for a reason (in most places anyways) so keep your dog on a leash. If you have your own property on a farm then that's a totally different story. But if you are in a public area, keep your dog on a leash. Doesn't matter how friendly it may be.

My Sincere Respect for the trainers and riders of these horses, but as for the dog owner, if the HUMANS aren't trained properly and held responsible for their selfish, stubborn attitude the animals don't stand a chance. You may love your dog but obviously not enough to train yourself and that pet. I've heard stories of adopted and 'tamed' feral Mustangs who are down right intolerant of all dogs and defend themselves with extreme prejudice. Domesticated horses don't get that kind of exposure to danger in our barns and pastures. Neighbors lost a Hafflinger Mare to a pack of coyote last year.
