Young people aged between 5 to 14 years are at the highest risk of developing an initial episode of ARF. Patients identified as being at risk of ARF recurrences and the development of or worsening RHD require frequent prophylactic treatment with penicillin antibiotics, for at least ten years. Benzathine benzylpenicillin (Bicillin L-A) intramuscular injection is administered at least every four weeks. These injections can be extremely painful and distressing for children.
This educational video has been developed to show the process from a child’s perspective of what happens when they come in for their clinic appointment to receive the Bicillin L-A injection. The video can be used to alleviate some of the fear for the patient by preparing them with what to expect and ensure that they are aware of their choices of preferred therapies available to them when receiving their injection.
