A Plea to Nintendo from a Lifelong Fan 

Hey guys! Thanks for watching! Just in case you're wondering, the "For Phil" dedication at the start is for a friend of mine who inspired me to make this video. We had a dinner conversation about what we wanted to see from Nintendo, and this video came as a result of that. Also, he's obsessed with sloths. Hi, Phil!

Im from the future and we can now see that Nintendo listened with great games like BoW, Mario oddessy and smash bros ultimate

Chris Febraury 2017: Nintedo please don't fuck this up Chris October 2019: I FUCKIN LOVE MY NINTENDO SWITCH Nintendo didn't disappoint. They delivered games the fans wanted and created a system accessible to everyone and easy for developers to work on.

Here's hoping Nintendo won't take this video down.

Nintendo 64 fans, where you at?

Chris, you can argue with your mouth, but you can only vote with your money. You've already given Nintendo your full support when you preordered.

"I've already preordered my switch." And this was your mistake. Vote with your wallet, goddammit. No one cares about your words if they already have your money.

Nintendo doesn't care about your opinion.

If you're still buying their product, after several years of complaining, you've got no one to blame but yourself. To my memory, I haven't bought a single Nintendo product for a decade because of the reasons you rightly highlighted in the video. But following it up with 'I've already pre-ordered the switch'...seriously? Chris, I love you but I'm afraid you (and many many others) are a huge part of the problem. You want Nintendo to listen to you, but why do you think they will when you're practically throwing your money at them regardless?

I get where you're coming from... but I don't agree with the implication that Nintendo ever stopped trying to make great innovative games. I think a pretty easy case could be made that they have the best level design in the industry, and, even though third party can frequently suck on their systems, their first party titles are almost always range from really good to great. I also feel like you're not giving them enough credit for their history with handhelds. They've been kicking ass in that domain since the Game Boy.

2 Years in, I can say that the focus on Games has been stronger than before. Zelda Breath of the Wild amazing, Mario Odyssey is really great, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is really solid, and With a New Pokemon coming and some other staple series on the way, I can say the Switch really has stand-out games that satisfy

Hey Chris, in case you didn't know, most of the original people who were behind Donkey Kong Country on the SNES and Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie are now working for their own game development company called Playtonic Games, and they're releasing a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie named Yooka-Laylee, releasing for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Switch (digitally). Yup, leaving Rare was the worst decision Nintendo ever made for sure.

"What does that tell you" It tells that the gamecube is the best controller for smash...

Man, where to start with this video. I guess first with calling their separation with Rare their worst mistake. Not by a long shot. Rare was on its way down, as you can tell by the games they put out for Microsoft after their partnership with Nintendo ended. I see this argument all the time it's just a nostalgia fueled pipe dream by 90s kids. The worst of the separation was the loss of some IPs but Rare themselves would have been dead weight and Nintendo more than made up for them with Retro studios who went on to revitalize the Metroid series. No, Nintendo has many bigger mistakes like inadvertently creating the Playstation when they broke ties with working with Sony, or sticking with Cartridges for the n64, or failure to convert to modern gaming competition after the Wii in a better way. As for the rest of your video it seems like the same vague double edged argument I see on the internet all the time. "We want new great games, not gimmicks! But we don't want recycled stuff from the past but we want our old beloved series back!" And yeah, I get the aversion to some of their hardware choices like the gamepad and motion controls but it's like your argument willfully ignores the fact that exploring new ways to play and interact with video games through hardware ideas is directly about the games. Your argument acts as though Nintendo isn't thinking about gameplay when basically it's ALL they're thinking about, they're just approaching it in a different gameplay oriented way which is basically how they ALWAYS have, by thinking of a gameplay concept first and designing their software around that. Whether their gameplay innovations are successful is another argument entirely but the claim that they don't care about making games any more is just blatantly ignorant. Their problem isn't with game production themselves, they still put out top quality first party titles, it's with being able to woo third party developers to beef up their libraries to make their systems look more appealing in the eyes of the competition. Perhaps they don't put out as numerous games as they did in the 16 and 64 bit eras but that is more an effect of modern games being much larger productions than in those days which demand a lot more time and a lot more manpower than they did two decades ago. Plus some of your examples of older games don't even make sense for your argument because they weren't Nintendo games. Beyond Good and Evil? That was a third party multiplatform title from Ubisoft. What does that have to do with Nintendo's game production? Nintendo themselves still put out good titles, it's just now they either get overlooked unless they're a major franchise or people focus on their lack of third party support, which is certainly a valid criticism. The Wii is a great example of underappreciating a Nintendo console. This video seems to just focus on the usual complaints about motion controls and shovelware and this misguided complaint about "kiddiness" of the system. But great first party titles on the Wii include the likes of: Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart, Smash Bros Brawl, Xenoblade Chronicles, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Punch-Out, Zelda: Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Wario Land Shake It, Animal Crossing City Folk, New Super Mario Bros, Sin and Punishment Star Successor, Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Rhythm Heaven Fever and as for other quality tiles released on the Wii there's stuff like: A Boy and His Blob, Lost in Shadow, No More Heroes 1 and 2, Madworld, Red Steel 2, Zack and Wiki, Little King's Story, Fragile Dreams, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Muramasa, Rune Factory Frontier, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower not to mention great little pick up and play arcade style games like Blast Works and Geometry Wars. I get people being anxious about Nintendo game libraries going forward after the small lineup on the Wii U but lacking game production isn't really a first party problem for Nintendo and their hardware choices for the Switch will only increase the likelihood of more first party titles since it allows them to focus their attention on to a home console and portable device which means after they wind down on support for the 3ds they can make the Switch the benefactor of their handheld style content as well. So now they won't have to split development among two major devices. They already have a main series Fire Emblem planned for the Switch for next year so it looks like this is what they'll be doing going forward. As for third party support that's more up in the air but will have to do with the initial success of the Switch than Nintendo's choices themselves. If early adopters look promising it'll be financially viable for third parties to put their games on the console but really your "open letter" should be directed about third party support and not at Nintendo to make good games again, because they still do.

You're wrong about one point, Chris. Nintendo keeping Rare wouldn't have made a difference. The company was no longer the same after the Stamper brothers left. That's what killed Rare, not the move to Microsoft.

You're just blinded by nostalgia. The games they put out now are far better than anything they made during the so called "glory days". And yes, I've been playing since the launch of the NES back in the 80's.

While I agree with most of your points here, Chris, I must say that the video itself lacks a focus in terms of tone which makes your argument seem a little disjointed. It's unclear if you want to make a sincere, editorial to Nintendo since you include strange cutaway gags and other distractions. Also if this is an open letter to Nintendo, why bother repeating history to them that they already know? I feel like I would have appreciated this more if you were completely sincere and not trying too hard to get a laugh. But hey, that's just me, and wanted to throw some constructive criticism your way. I look forward to more content you bring in the future.

I understand where this is coming from Chris. But honestly, Nintendo doesn't care about your opinion, or mine. Money speaks louder than words, and sales is louder than that. People buy their stuff, and the Switch will probably sell well enough too. Not saying I agree with them, The last nintendo product I bought was the Gamecube cause everything else has been shit tbh.

I still have my GameCube and Nintendo 64 in working condition. They're my babies, would totally rescue them in a fire over my PS4 or Xbox.

You're 100% right. It's so hard nowadays to impress "gamers" because they think they've seen everything there is to see. And when new innovations appear they automatically label it a gimmick. The only real way to capture their interest is to mix old and new gameplay mechanics/elements together in perfect harmony to provide a sense of nostalgia and flair.

Great video, Chris! I miss those old Nintendo game consoles, SNES, N64 & GameCube had so many great games! The talent was already leaving RareWare before they were sold, so I doubt keeping them would've changed that. It wasn't Microsoft that forced them to make Banjo-Kazooie into a car game or to remove the swearing in Conker's Bad Fur Day.

as someone who got into Nintendo with the end of the GameCube i never had the feeling that they werent innovative with their Games. there were fewer, but Games like Mario Galaxy, Splatoon, the new Rayman Game are impressive Oo

9:05 that is where I and I think also many other people highly disagree with you, Chris. 15 years ago I might have agreed with you, because I still remembered the good old days of Rare. But they haven't changed *as a result* of Nintendo selling them off to Microsoft. Rare changed and Nintendo recognized that at a good timing. Rare has started to change before the deal with Microsoft. Their last game for the Gamecube was Starfox Adventures and while it sure wasn't a bad game, it didn't live up to the expectations we had from Rare. Grabbed by the Ghoulies for the original Xbox must have been in developement when still working with Nintendo. Just as Kameo, since it was planned to be a Gamecube title, so Nintendo was still working with Rare on that game. All these games were just okay or "good" to say the best. They weren't the quality we expected from Rare. If you asked me why, I think the reason behind this is because you cannot ensure the same quality, love and charme in a game when you have teams that are 10 times bigger than in the N64 days. Rare was great at managing smaller teams but with newer consoles they had to have more people in the teams to meet the deadlines. To be honest, looking back at the deal now, it looks like the best deal Nintendo did. I mean for 2001 or 2002, almost half a billion dollars was a great deal for a studio that was about to die in talent. I agree it's a shame but I wouldn't blame Nintendo for that (neither so much Microsoft, for that matter).

I love how you bring up both Baten Kaitos and Mystical Ninja towards the end of your video. It's funny since both of those games I love so much and have replayed many times on my N64 and Gamecube. It's also funny to me seeing how you opened my eyes in realizing how Nintendo has brought in fun and exciting titles like these two from third-party developers to their systems. You and I seem to have similar tastes and ideas on what Nintendo needs to focus on and what it really is as a whole to us, the fans. Let's hope they know what they're doing with the Switch and allow more amazing titles and understand what we want out of it.

I am excited for the Switch. The Wii U had several really good games and I really enjoyed a lot of them.
