Imagine walking into an AD to hopefully purchase your dream watch, a Submariner perhaps. After years of saving and anticipation, only to be told you can’t buy because you haven’t ‘earned’ the dealers trust. It could deter you from ever returning.

I walked into an Omega AD in NYC when I was like 23-24 years old, wearing a G-Shock. They treated me with respect and were happy to show me any watch in the store. I'll go back there when I'm finally ready to buy just because of how they treated me. Why scare off future sales? Makes no sense.

Some years back my then 15 year old son and I were in a watch store on Rodeo Drive. We were looking at watches way above the Rolex price point. The rep was wonderful trying a 40k Hublot on my son and letting me take pics. Today my kid is a successful engineer and I wouldn't be surprised if someday he went back to that store to make a real purchase - he can now afford it.

Because I guess they don't need your business. The Rolex' are worth more when you walk out the door with it than the retail price, but the AD are not allowed to sell them for more than retail price. So they only sell to customers who will future benefit their store because they can afford to be picky with who they sell to. It is a business move, makes people pretty angry, but makes Rolex that much more exclusive to get. I actually like it, people act like Rolex or AD owe them something. Actually a lot of people have this attitude in general about everything in life. No one owes you anything in this life, you either earn what you get, or you don't. Now, the AD shouldn't be rude about it, but it is the way it is.

One of my least favorite interactions... Went in to a local dealer to look at availability of maybe an OP39, OR a BB58. She ended up having a 58 available, at which point she said “any interest in trading a watch towards the purchase?” (While looking at the GS on my wrist, sbgv205) I told her I wasn’t interested in trading it, she responded by just picking apart the GS, (it’s just a quartz watch, no one really cares about that kind of a watch, No one cares about GS and even less care about quartz GS) mind you... I NEVER SUGGESTED I WANTED TO SELL IT. She just for some reason took the opportunity to degrade a watch I love, for reasons I’ll never understand. Luckily, they had the veeeerry same GS in that very store. So I inquired about her ability to degrade a watch while simultaneously having it on display for sale. Needless to say, I avoided buying from her. I ended up going elsewhere for my purchase. Still proudly wearing the 9F GS, love it.

Just a related story: My friend loves cars and always loved McLarens, but he's mostly poor. Back when he was in high school, his family took him on a vacation to the UK as a surprise. While they were in London he spotted a McLaren at a stoplight. The owner clearly saw his excitement, pulled over, let him hop in to check it out, and then took him around the block for a ride. That's the kind of treatment these ADs should be giving all potential customers. Everyone's interest matters, discriminatory sales practices are crap. My friend told me that, due to that experience with that wealthy man and his McLaren, if he ever has enough money, the first exotic car he's going to purchase is a McLaren. Was the McLaren owner a McLaren dealer? Nobody knows, but that positive experience with the brand sealed the deal for my friend and everyone who saw the kind deed that day.

Had a super great experience at an Omega Boutique in Orange County California. We are from Tucson and were in the area for a NCAA basketball tournament game. The Boutique was in South Coast Plaza. Me and my wife went in to look at a watch for her. I had no expectations of purchasing there since I know the Boutique stores are full priced., but we had so much fun with staff we purchased a Omega Constellation with a pearl dial. The manager gave us a bottle of champagne too, plus called over to the high end restaurant in the plaza and made reservations and purchased dinner for us that night. I have reached a point in my life that I can afford to buy a 20k watch. I own a Rolex Deep Sea Dweller going on 4 years. I have numerous Tag Heuer watches but my favorite is the Grand Grand Carrera Calibre 36. I receive more compliments when I wear the Calibre 36. I also own a Omega Planet Ocean Chronograph with the 9300 movement. Over the past two years I have attempted to purchase a Rolex GMT Batman and Daytona with the white dial with no success. I have given up and if it happens it happens but more then likely it will not. This past October the wife and I were in a jewelry store designing a ring for our anniversary (33 years ). The ring was going to cost just over 25k. The jewelry store sold Omegas, Cartier, and a few other brands that I cannot remember. The sales associate told me they sell Rolex's at another location. I told her I was in search of a white dial Daytona and she told me she would be right back. She returned within a couple of minutes and told me she could sell me the Daytona if I buy my wife's ring from her. In all honesty that did not sit well with me. I did buy my wife her ring but went with an jewelry designer instead. This past December I was at a Rolex Boutique and we were going to buy my wife a Date Just with mother of pearl dial and full diamond bezel. The sales associate brought out a GMT Batman (new) from the safe. She informed me if I buy the Date Just for the wife I could purchase the Batman. My wife made the decision to leave the store and I concurred with her. Directly across from the Rolex Boutique is the Omega Boutique. Long story short we purchased my wife a Omega Speedmaster and she is extremely happy with her watch. I don't buy into the relationship with a reseller to buy a product. I understand since there is limited Rolex sport watches the AD's can selective since there is more demand then supply.

I'm so torn. I love the design and history of the sub. It's been my grail for a decade. But the Rolex/ AD behavior the last couple yrs has turned me off. With Rolex artificially holding back supply and ADs either selling to grey market or their preferred clients irks me the wrong way. I've been waiting 2 yrs for a ND Sub at my AD (with purchase history) and there appears to be no end in sight. Especially if Rolex bring out a new sub. I'll have to wait many more yrs to be able to purchase one at retail. I refuse to buy grey (I can afford to) so as to not be a hypocrite and feed the beast. And dislike buying used. So here I am with 10k in hand, in a recession, craving to buy my dream watch and I can't. Nor will be able to in the foreseeable future. I am seriously considering giving the finger to Rolex and their network of mostly Dirty ADs. (There are some good ones I'm sure) and buying a seamaster. Omega is the better watch all around, half the price, but more importantly they are available.

Took me 6 days to get my no date sub without purchase history at the AD. Just go to a different AD because waiting 2 years for the LEAST desirable submariner is simply the salesman's way of telling you to go away. I've had a few great experiences at Rolex ADs as well as a few bad ones. I was in one recently where a customer was looking at watches on a tray, one of them was a Pepsi GMT. This was right in the middle of the store, not in a back room or somewhere with privacy. He didn't buy it so I told them I'd take it. I was told it was onyl for "established clients". I then proceeded to tell them that it must be hard for them to develop established customers if they refuse to sell watches to people. I understand these ADs want to take care of their good customers but treating other customer like crap is not a good long term plan. I know they can't give a Pepsi GMT to everyone that walks in the door but parading desirable watches around the store and then telling people they can't buy them seems like a poor way to treat customers. If ADs want to play these games, at least do it in privacy. If/when the Rolex hype starts to die down, these ADs are going to be in trouble.

There were other sales assistants in the store but he seemed like the manager as they smiled but were reluctant to talk. I’ve never had an experience even close to this at any AD anywhere ever, seems like they are just not interested in having me as a customer. I’m a normal looking guy already with a collection of nice watches they very much gave me the impression that I am not wanted as a customer. Perhaps this particular dealership already has too many customers and too much money and they have reached max capacity?

Pitiful but not surprised. Every time I walked into an Omega AD, AP AD, PP AD, or any other AD other than Rolex I get treated like Royalty. Especially Omega and AP. I walk into a Rolex AD and just my Age, Look, and presence I get the stink eye. Or some Rolex Salesperson just talks to me like I'm bothering them or they talk down to me. Don't understand why people take it. I have moved from them to Grand Seiko, Cartier, Vacheron, Omega and fancy a Lange next. People put up with this treatment and is unacceptable. If buying a steak dinner and were treated like that people would not go back - so why go back when buying something a hell of a lot more expensive?!

I get that there are big purchasers, but small consistent purchasers pay the monthly bills. I've made friends with some dealers (not Rolex) and just kept buying. Unfortunately the brand itself became very threatening towards any discounts given. In time they would open boutiques and close ADs. The reality of Breitling and TAG is, I'm not interested unless there is a discount. I get that they fixed the B-01, but am still confused as to why they released it when it wasn't ready. TH destroyed themselves by putting in Sellita and still listing ETA based movements on their website and then followed up with the Seiko based movement (which I kinda like). I walked into a Torneau in California and was aware that the salespeople were watching me to see where I lingered. I gave each brand an equal stare and was about to leave and then paused at the JLC. The salesperson appeared immediately, damn... I told her I was just looking and she said "We have Cartier over there!!" So I said "I'm looking at JLC beside IWC and you want me to go look at a Cartier??" Then I spotted an IWC Big Pilot on her wrist hanging upside down and swinging like a pendulum like some big cheap fashion watch. and I just had to leave. I said to my girlfriend, "With clueless staff like that , they are going to close that store"... and they did. The place became a Rolex store. Now I live outside Toronto and only went to California once, so how did I know it was now a Rolex store? Here's how: losangeles.cbslocal.com/video/3285104-armed-suspects-rob-rolex-store-in-century-city/ 90% of my watches are impulse buys. Clearly if you sour the experience, I'm not in the mood to shop anymore. If I see it and tried it on and like it, I will tell myself I'll get it next year. In a few minutes, I'll be thinking before the year is over. Then a few more minutes and I'll think.. two months. At that point I know I'm going to get it before I go home...

Good ADs exist. Haltom Jewelers in Fort Worth, Texas, is my preferred AD for Rolex (and Patel Philippe). They treat me with respect and in the one year that I have established a relationship, they have assisted me with two desired Rolex purchases - Oyster steel Sub (no date, black dial) and GMT (Batman on Jubilee bracelet ). I am a relatively new customer for them yet they treat me very well...which should be expected. I am sure their more established customers receive preferential status on highly desired models, but Haltom never makes me feel inferior or less of a customer. Point being, there are good people and good ADs out there, find a good AD with professional staff, and build a relationship over time. Don’t put up with bad people/ADs that don’t deserve or value your business.

Personally would love to see Rolex moving into the 21st century and adopting for the most part a direct ordering and sales .service within online facility .Rolex boutiques strategically placed in major cities and for the most part taking the middlemen out of the equation. There is just so much dirty underhand practices and this would be away to address it . Personally I don’t think most dealers care where the watches end up after the sale ., The fact is they are salespeople and it’s about maximising profit hence only selling to people who have a long buying history or encouraging people to buy lesser pieces that they don’t want in order to further maximise their profit margins , which incidentally are already a large chunk of any higher end sale . There may well be major scale changes as big business adapts to the challenges ahead and this will include Rolex .. so who knows the AD being king of the Hill may not last forever. I

Some of my best luck has been with some of the biggest and best dealers in the biggest and richest locations in the world...so I'm not sure it matters all that much. In fact, it can be harder to acquire the elusive pieces from the "off the beaten path" dealers since those dealers would find it even harder to sell the non-desirable pieces, thus making them even more inclined to tie the sale of a hard to get piece to an easy to get piece. They don't have as much spontaneous foot traffic and customers with deep pockets to sell the non-desirables, so they are often more careful with how they offload the only carrot they have...their grail watches.

ORTHOGUY I’m friends with a Rolex allocator, and had always lusted after the newer sport models. But when it came time to pull the trigger as someone who truly loves watches I didn’t do it. I bought a tudor gmt instead where I was able to walk in and get it the same day, he told me [obviously] that he could get me whatever within 6 months, except the hulk which he hadn’t seen for a year. He also told me that a solid gold purchase 40-50 k up was generally the starting point for getting on the wait list.. I loved Rolex for their classic style and tool functionality, but now it seems tudor offer that much more genuinely. I may purchase a 1675 vintage gmt in the future or a tudor mil sub. But I’ve lost a lot of respect for the modern brand in the last two years. So will always go for vintage moving forward. My brother owns a number of watches including Patek, refuses to buy anything Rolex due to the marketing. Sticks to tudor, GS, and PP instead. I dropped into the AD again in January of 2018 and picked up an Explorer that had just come in. I have then dropped in a few times and in 2019, i bought a DJ with fluted bezel and jubilee. But i have been waiting for the new Pepsi since day 1 of BW2018 when i was 5th on the list. I get treated well when i visit and have tried several high end hot models which they have in the back. I have been offered (and purchased) all of the above and I would put the Pepsi jubilee and the Hulk at about the same level in terms of hard to get. The steel Daytonas (black and white...and I have both) are harder to get and the blue Sky-Dweller is even harder than the Daytonas...significantly harder. I got it after about a year of waiting and it was the first one they received in over 2 years. I was very fortunate to be the one who got the call. The other super hard one is the yellow gold emerald green dial Daytona. I got the call on that one as well but it is a longer story that involved a bit of luck. Finally, my steel Patek Philippe Nautilus is known as the hardest of all but I got that one fairly quickly, surprisingly enough.

People like to quote the Pretty Woman scene when he takes her back to the store to humiliate the staff, but the reality is that the store's strategy worked...all too well! People moan about Rolex's strategy, yet remain absolutely spellbound! The issue with social media and RU-vid is that it just compounds the effects of this spell and leaves Rolex in an even better position. If social media died today, within 6 months Rolex ADs would be full to the brim of stock.
